ഏഷ്യയിലും ആഫ്രിക്കയിലുമായി, പൈതൺ (Genus: Python) ജനുസ്സിൽപ്പെടുന്ന ഏഴ് സ്പീഷീസുകൾ ഉള്ളതായി കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്.
ഈ വർഗത്തിൽപ്പെടുന്നതും, തെക്കുകിഴക്കേ ഏഷ്യയിൽ കണ്ടുവരുന്നതുമായ റെറ്റിക്കുലേറ്റഡ് പൈതൺ (Reticulated Python) ആണ് ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും നീളം കൂടിയ പാമ്പ്.
കേരളത്തിൽ സാധാരണ കണ്ടുവരുന്ന ഇനത്തിന് (Indian Rock Python ) 3.6 മീറ്റർ (12 അടി) വരെ നീളം വെക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഇതിനെ പെരുമ്പാമ്പ് എന്നും ചിലയിടങ്ങളിൽ പറയാറുണ്ട്. ആഹാരം ചെറു സസ്തനികളും പക്ഷികളുമാണ്. മാൻ കുഞ്ഞുങ്ങളെവരെ ഇതിനു വിഴുങ്ങാൻ കഴിയും. മലമ്പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലാണ് ഇതിനെ കൂടുതലായി കണ്ടുവരുന്നത്.
