Musical instrument name

Hi,

I am working through African lutes for an article I am creating on the English-language Wikipedia. I am contacting you to see what you know about an image File:Diffa Niger Griot DSC 0177.jpg. On [3 October 2021] you made a change to the caption, indicating the musician is playing a Komsa. I think you are right (based on the research I am doing for my article.) Can you tell me anything about what led you to put that name on the instrument. Everyone else seems to want to call it a Xalam (which is another class of instrument altogether). Anything you know or even guess would be helpful for me trying to sort out this image. The original has disappeared from Flickr.

You're very welcome for the review, but I wouldn't sweat the small stuff too much. You're already off to a great start; I'm very impressed that you were able to find that many reliable sources (aside from the Wikipedia articles, that is)! I've found that researching is the easiest part about writing an article; it's the anal retentive attention to Manual of Style details that will kill you. Hi, My source for that link is from the book "In the Country of Country" by Nicholas Dawidoff. Dawidoff seems to me a credible researcher who spent a great deal of time researching the origins of Country Music. Yes, to get a user subpage it must have your username and then This→/← type of slash (I can never remember which is the backslash and which is the forwardslash). Then you can title it whatever you want. So it would be User:Jacqke/insert title here. Hopefully we can eliminate the speculative theories many reference works tend to repeat as fact and use actual historical source material to expand the early instrument articles. Hi Jacqke, here's a line of thought I would welcome your assistance with. I see articles on the guitar and related stuff which constantly repeat the hoary myth (in my humble opinion) of the Arabic origin for the guitar, gittern, and so forth.

Here's a provisional list of the problems I have with it - I would be grateful for feedback.

1. No actual historical sources - nothing in any documents, letters, etc., from the period to support the theory. Nada absolute. I keep finding a reference to 'guitarra latina' and 'guitarra morisco' with no attributable source or context, so if you know where this comes from (apart from modern encyclopedias trotting out the theory) - it's a good place to investigate further I think..

2. The Cantigas de Santa Maria illustration appearing in articles like the one on the guitar (third one down) to support the idea. There are no captions on the original document to go with the illustrations, and no indications in the text to support the identification of any instruments, let alone the guitar. So it's all guesswork really... I could say the picture in question has an instrument on the right which resembles a gittern and one on the left that resembles a citole. Would I be wrong?

3. The assumption made that no instruments like the gittern existed in Iberia before the Arab conquests just frankly doesn't hold water. Apart from the linguistic evidence (which deserves more attention for a whole number of reasons), it's worth considering what kind of society existed there prior to the invasion.

The fact the 'Iberians' (I'm using the term loosely here to support the line of thought) lacked the military capacity (or even did not wish), to resist the invasion; is no indication of the musical culture existing at the time. I won't waste your time with text here, but if you check out Wiki stuff on the history of the Roman Empire in the Iberian peninsula I think you'll get the picture of my drift here.

To your first question: sure, I don't see why there couldn't be a category dedicated to classical mandolinists. It can certainly be populated.

To your second question: yes, you can paste the newer list over the older one, as long as you're not eliminating any information from the older one. Tim White-Sobieski Article Nominated for deletion

Dear Jacqke,

I see that the English Wikipedia page for Tim White Sobieski has been nominated for deletion just today or yesterday. Prior to that, it was in good standing. I changed a few things re: updating links that were no longer valid, changed punctuation, and checked grammar, and it seems due to these changes the page is up for deletion.

Is there any way the page can be removed from this category? What shall I do? Should I revert all the changes back to the way the page originally was?

@Paulinapaulina3030: I have been annoyed by this before, but I think I understand how to help. Another editor has tagged it for deletion. What that means is it needs to have additional references added to it and be rewritten to make it more "encyclopedic". At an undetermined point, an administrator will review changes (and any arguments we make for importance) and decide to keep or delete it. The good news is that there is a lot of material to use to cite as references. Best are newspapers and books, but museum exhibition catalogs can work and even online websites (these are of the least value to establish notability). There is also the editor Butterbeanne interested in saving the article, a new writer who might have access to good info sources. I will be available off and on to help. If it takes me a while to answer, my life probably is busy, but I will help you. Don't list hope as it can be saved. Idk your experience with Wikipedia, but if you need help with any aspect, especially with the things like how to add references, let me knowJacqke (talk) 18:28, 27 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Timmyshin, I submit to your judgment. My source had similar feelings about the identification; I got my information for many of these cover images from an enthusiast online, calling himself the Landlord. He was uncomfortable with the identification being Yan Lingyu but said that the magazine identified her as such. "The cover character of the 29th issue of 1928: Yan Lingyu (Liangyou said that it is Yan Lingyu, the landlord feels a bit different) Yan Lingyu (1910.4.26—1935.3.8), formerly known as Feng Fenggen..." Since there is this much uncertainty among sources, it is probably best not to put it in an article until that is cleared up. Should I attach a note to the image mentioning the uncertainty among sources? I should add that the translation software I used made this passage very touchy, even contradicting itself, depending on which characters touched one another.

Regarding this picture I don't think there's any uncertainty: compare it with the one in Yan Yuexian's article, and the resemblance (at least to me) is too obvious. I knew how Ruan Lingyu looked because I have watched some of her films. (Chinese silent films from the 1930s - at least the ones I watched - couldn't even compare with American films from the late 1910s, but I would recommend Ruan's films. I try only to go from other languages to English, as I have no way to know if the translation looks good going the other way. SkyGazer 512 Hi, I appreciate your looking at the article and for having a high standard. I agree that I need better resources. Perhaps I can find someone in Cambodia to talk to. I have found only one academic document so far, and haven't checked it yet. For the moment, before I dig into the sources, I am just trying to sort out all the instruments. They are difficult, both because of language issues and because of imprecision of local use of terms for instruments. It makes finding a simple definitive word a battle, and I've had to delete and rename and restart pages. I will certainly purse non-blog sources if I can find them. I chose these simply because the information transmitted clearly came from a printed source, even if they didn't identify it. As I work, please let me know if there are other issues. SkyGazer 512 Just to let you know, I already had to rearrange article names, once I checked the academic source. It turns out there are two Cambodian instruments with nearly identical names (in English at least) that don't translate well. Anyways, yeah, for obscure subjects like this, it's often very difficult to find reliable sources covering them in-depth, and I appreciate that you're willing to find what you can to create these articles. Unfortunately, I'm on mobile atm so I can't really look at the new source deeply, which I apologize for, but in short, if the PDF provides significant coverage and seems reliable enough, there should be no issue with removing the tag. The Bad Shepherds

You are clearly extremely well-versed in the usage and development of the mandolin and mandola, but I wonder if you are familiar with the above named outfit (now sadly defunct). I was lucky enough to see The Bad Shepherds twice in concert. Ade Edmondson played both of those instruments to a more than competent level, but the virtuoso instrumentation of Troy Donockley and Andy Dinan brought the ensemble together. The originality of performing predominately punk rock and new wave music on traditional instruments was, to my ears, a real treat. If you are unaware of them, then any of their performance pieces on YouTube, or wherever, may interest you. Maybe, just maybe, Edmondson at least deserves listing under [Category:British mandolinists]. Regards,

FULBERT I appreciate your looking over the History of the mandolin article. I had to split it from Mandolin due to that article being too long. I agree that the intro needs work and I will do that, if someone else doesn't tackle it before I get to it. Regarding the photos, I am not sure. I know that Wikipedia often tends to be sparse. I have tried to pick images targeted to content. The content covers more than a thousand years of obscure history, and if one looks in one of the encyclopedias (Groves Dictionary of Musical Instruments), they have adapted a similarly photo-heavy approach to deal with lute family and violin/fiddle family instruments). I also understand that my liking of content could be emotional attachment as creator, and if enough editors say I put too much in, then I will cull the images. I tried to use the images to chunk information (photos with photos in a box). Maybe this is not a good approach; I don't know. I think the images are helpful in this article Jacqke, and it is more an issue of placement and perhaps too many images that then distract, rather than add to and support, the text. You may want to check out the suggestions in MOS:IMAGES for some guidance and suggestions. @SportingFlyer:, I am shocked. I have spent a great deal of time researching for that article. I don't understand what material is copyrighted that you are referring to. If so, then it can certainly be modified without killing the entire article. The first indication I had of a problem was the notice that the article was deleted. How about letting me know you spotted a problem? What is to be done?

I got a shock when I got home from work tonight. An article that I spent years researching was taken down. I don't understand what copyright was broken, but if there was some copyrighted material, surely that can be taken out without killing the article. I have spent a great deal of time getting quotes right and indicating where material came from. I paraphrase and rewrite and tell who said what. Simply seeing the article go away without getting the chance to redress any complaints (or even know there was a problem with my work) is very discouraging. I have been very active on Wikipedia, but I still don't know where to begin to talk to anyone about this.

Two pages were mentioned as unambiguous copyright infringements. The first <acousticmusic.org/research/guitar-information/guitars-stringed-instruments-general-information> is actually a copy of the Mandolins in the United States article, when it was part of the Mandolin article. I wrote that material!

The second cited was a conversation on MandolinCafe <https://www.mandolincafe.com/forum/threads/114005-Who-was-the-first-American-mandolin-manufacturer/page3>. I started that conversation as part of my research for this article. The material said to be a copyright infringement was a quote on MandolinCafe of a paragraph from from Wikipedia: 

"Mandolin awareness in the United States blossomed in the 1880s, as the instrument became part of a fad that continued into the mid-1920s.[57][58] According to Clarence L. Partee a publisher in the BMG movement (banjo, mandolin and guitar), the first mandolin made in the United States was made in 1883 or 1884 by Joseph Bohmann, who was an established maker of violins in Chicago.[201] Partee characterized the early instrument as being larger than the European instruments he was used to, with a "peculiar shape" and "crude construction," and said that the quality improved, until American instruments were "superior" to imported instruments.[201] At the time, Partee was using an imported French-made mandolin.[201] [59] By the year 1900 mandolin sales constituted 10.6 percent of the nation's "small goods" musical instrument sales, less than the 21.3 percent that music boxes held and more than the guitar's 9.6 percent.[202] The mandolin also outsold zithers, "Apollo harps" and autoharps at 8.6 percent and brass instruments for bands at 7.5 percent of total sales.[202]"

A simple check in the history of the Mandolin article will show the above material being created, with all the first drafts, typos and corrections.

That was me on MandolinCafe, quoting what I had just written on Wikipedia for the article! If there are any other areas, please tell me.

@SportingFlyer: I understand. I had to spin it off from the Mandolin article because it had gotten too big. Also History of Mandolins and Mandolin playing traditions worldwide. I appreciate that you did what you did when you saw it. I just discovered a straight lift from someone's research paper, while writing the current article in my sandbox. One suggestion...it took me a lot of looking before I found out what you had seen; the links to the pages were only found in one place, and after the article was deleted, I couldn't see those links. Once I did, I was able to examine and figure out what happened. I'll make mention on the talk page of those links for the future. @Jacqke: As I noted on the other talk page, there were several different websites with high to low level copying. I would recommend running the article through Earwig once it's restored - not the only tool used, but you can get a sense of what text lives elsewhere, and incorporate that into the talk page statement. Thanks @Jacqke for yr encouragement. Actually I am quite busy with my college works. I will help contribute other Cambodian related articles that lacked the information. I am bilingual, Khmer is my native and English is my second language, so I can translate and understand well or what should be translate or what is a proper translations should be. Google translate might gives a wrong translation. Be careful with that. Actually there are many research papers regarding the articles I edited and expanded as well as other Cambodian related articles on Wikipedia, however, those research papers or scholarly articles haven't been translated into English that's why many information is lacked on Wikipedia article. I'll try my best in my free times adding the necessary information regarding the articles I can help. Seriously, I am quite concerned regarding the Copyrights policy of Wikipedia after getting alerted as I afraid I might be blocked from editing by Wikipedia haha. Antony Willianson You have done well; copyright is a constant focus, and you are aware of it now. I have had many issues with translators and have to keep my writing very simple when I use Khmer, Thai or Chinese sources. I asked, because I like asking native language speakers occaisional questions.
When you have time, would you re-read the pinpeat article. I worked on the history section for sentence flow; I was confused about when the pin and pinpeat came to Cambodia. Was it during the Funan kingdom (1st-6th centuries)? My other question-- you wrote that 250 songs (or a list of songs) was found on the street after the fall of the Khmer Rouge. Can you say more about that discovery? It is a great fact and really needs a source (even if that source is a blog).

Thanks Jacqke for yr response. The history of pinpeat can be traced back with the introduction of Pin in Cambodia or the Indianization process in Southeast Asia which mean the early Funan era.

So to understand more about the history of pinpeat we have to track the history of pin in Cambodia which was used as a premiere instrument in Pinpeat orchestra or literally pin gave the name to the historical pinpeat ensemble. Although pin has been absent for hundreds of years and now being revived and re-accompanied with other Pinpeat instruments, the ensemble is called as Pinpeat as a remembrance of its past. However, the earliest surviving depiction of Pin (harp) was carved on a temple at Sambor Prey Kuk (UNESCO) at the end of the Funan era which is in the begining of Chenla era (7th CE). However, according to a record (I cant find the direct source, will add as reference if i found) but was quoted in many articles and research papers, there was a mention of group of musicians namedPinpangsimilar to Pinpeat, which used Pin-an instrument introduced from ancient India during the Funan era that's why many researchers believed that Pinpeat is probably established at least during the Funan era (1sth-6th CE). Hope u can understand my explanation. I will try to make the text flow when I am free or u can help me as well.

About that 250 plus list of Pinpeat song/ musics were discovered on the street of Phnom Penh when the capital was liberated in 1979. This document was published in a Newpaper in the similar years. I try to find the primary source as well. Note that during the Khmer Rouge, countless documents were destroyed, even the Reamker's (Cambodian Ramayana) poem and large part of its story description havent revived or discovered yet as they were lost in this tragedy as well. As I remember, the list of Pinpeat Song here was posted by a blog or a writers which cant be cited when I was adding this part, I will try to put the reference later. However,this source is very significance because It is a rare surviving document regarding the pinpeat musics list which were lost in the tragedy only some of them are being revived, the rest remained only name. The list are all in Khmer (I romanized) and I translated some of their title, I will try to translate the rest into English as well, but it takes time.

Hoping you might have an suggestion. I submitted the image in 2009, now up for deletion. Fair enough...I never secured written permission at the time. The copyright holder agreed free use over the phone, as long as credit to his comoany was attached to the image.

American Banjo Museum

Hello! I saw your post at the Teahouse and made some edits to the above article. It's a very well-written article! The main problem, in my view, is that it contains way too much detail to be encyclopedic. If there is away to delete about half the material, you will be on the way to having those tags removed. The information is fascinating, but there is too much of it. For example, the article on the Museum_of_Modern_Art is 69KB; the ABM article is about 45KB. The Museum of Fine Arts Houston is 20,330 bytes. Perhaps have a look at some articles on large museums and you will see what kinds of trims are needed. You know, it's a pretty stellar detailed description overall! But if you consider that we do not have any detailed coverage of the collections of the above extremely notable museums, you will be on the right track to making adjustments to ABM. I think you might look also at Musical_Instrument_Museum_(Phoenix), Musical_Instrument_Museum_(Brussels) and Berlin_Musical_Instrument_Museum, you will see some inspirational examples, in terms of trimming. Concheras

Hello. Here in Mexico we call those instruments concha(s), conchera(s), guitarra(s) conchera(s), mandolina(s) conchera(s), guitarra(s) de concha, mandolina(s) de concha.

S is used for plural in both adjective and sustantive.

Example, 2 instruments: "dos mandolinas concheras".

"Danza concheras" is grammatically incorrect, you need s on danzas, and is also lexically incorrect, since "danzas concheras" refer to "dance of concheras", and the article is mainly about the instuments.

When I created this article, it was intended for instruments only, there wasn't a text about history of the dances. The dances are covered in concheros article. Danzas concheras would be translated as "concheras dances".

I have focused on lutes mandolins, etc. for a while, but am moving my focus to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Musical Instruments, because I think there hasn't been serious activity to standardize articles, create new articles or assess articles for some time. Gryffindor, I appreciate the information. I didn't realize article titles could be italicized, but you are right. I stand corrected. A question then... the article rebab which is now italicized in the article title. Looking through that article, I see the word is not italicized later on in the article. Does it need italicized throughout, or in initial appearance or each time it appears? I don't see anything about repetitive use of the word, which happens when explaining and comparing. Eagledj, I think you are right about Guitar needing improvement. Would you like to work together on the article? I tend to make articles more complex when I am very interested in a subject, but that shouldn't be a problem with guitar. At the least, I'm willing to talk to someone else that is actively working the guitar article.

I would suggest that, as far as is possible, some thought should be placed into creating a common organizational structure for guitar, mandolin and lute, which are all similar subjects and are all vital 4 articles. Hi Jacqke,I have other projects going and I can only look in intermittently on guitar. You've done a bang-up job on lute and mandolin, good work. These two are good because they have a dominant author, YOU. Guitar has so many different contributors that it is a patchwork without a leader. I do not have time to go over paragraphs of unreferenced content, trying to find legitimate sources for someone else's words. I will, however, keep in touch and help when I can. 245CMR, no controversy nor offense is intended. There are a number of images of Krishna dancing with a vina. I am uncertain of religious aspects, my only interest being historical. If it bothers you, please feel free to revert the addition. I am doing my best to put images to good use as I find them. I am certain that it is a vina and not a flute; details from different angles in various photos include a resonator between the instrument and his shoulder, the visible string, especially at the instrument's top, the bottom of the instrument which matches the look of other tube/stick zither images from sculpture. Edit bombing the cornett article

Hi, I appreciate your enthusiasm but can you please consider making fewer, broader and better proofed edits? In the last month you have made 420 edits to the Cornett article. It makes it difficult to track progress and identify when/where errors occurred, not to mention slowing/overburdening some automated tools and bots that query article history. If fear of losing edits is the problem, there is a very handy Firefox add-on called Textarea Cache which will keep a log of your changes to an edit area; I'm sure there's something similar for other browsers. I do apologize for the "edit bombing"; the habit does indeed reflect much lost work, from poor internet connections on a mobile phone where I do much of my work. If you know of an Android-phone solution, that would be useful. As to proofing, yes I will try to slow down. I don't catch mistakes that I make in editing until after the publish button has been hit, and in crappy-internet land, preview often loses my work. As to Marcuse, yes I used her books a lot for some sections; she wrote densely, with a good deal of information in one place. Also she gave details when others assumed knowledge in the reader. I don't think removing her refs is a good idea, unless they can be replaced; other refs need to be brought in. I appreciate that you are taking the time to read through the edits; in the years I have been at this, you may be the only one to comment on the process, to actually act as an editor instead of a writer (which is what I think I do). Musical instrument name

I am working through African lutes for an article I am creating on the English-language Wikipedia. I am contacting you to see what you know about an image File:Diffa Niger Griot DSC 0177.jpg. On [3 October 2021] you made a change to the caption, indicating the musician is playing a Komsa. I think you are right (based on the research I am doing for my article.) Can you tell me anything about what led you to put that name on the instrument. Everyone else seems to want to call it a Xalam (which is another class of instrument altogether). @Why? I Ask. You maintain the percussion instruments template, so I thought I would see if you had an answer for me. I have been looking at 13th century A.D. images and came across the following: File:Cantiga 330 Cantigas de santa maria.jpg. I seem to recall seeing blocks like those in her hands somewhere in western music, but cannot place where. Is there a better name for what she is holding than "clapper?" After looking videos of the Thai krap saepa being played, I'm pretty sure the blocks can sound like a sharp snap or a series of clicks like castanets, and also have a rattling sound. This painting is actually discussed in Percussion Instruments and their History by James Blades: "We also have the Cantigas de Santa Maria by Alphonso X "The Wise" (1252–84) giving early evidence regarding the use of castanets in Spanish song" (pg. 193).
