Reference list style

Duncan, In your latest edit you have again imposed your preferred style of reference list, for no obvious reason. I don't want to get into an edit war but please restore the original form of reference list, with the individual references listed in the "reflist" and only short inline refs in the text. WP:LDR explains "List defined references" which is the form of reference list which was established in the Steve Haake article. Its use is also mentioned at Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Avoiding_clutter. PamD 11:32, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK, @PamD: I will change back. I'm not used to using that style so give me some time to read and understand the documentation first. Wikipedia allows both reference styles, but I take your point about switching styles without consensus. Thanks. I gave up on the visual editor years ago, after trying it, because it didn't allow me to do some things I wanted to - I see to remember problems seeing the text while inputting categories or stub types, or perhaps DEFAULTSORTs, which was a real problem when trying to input an unfamiliar geographical term or foreign name etc. I find the LDR style good to use because I can find a reference very easily if I want to tweak it - I add them in A-Z of ref name - and the text of the article becomes much less cluttered. The downside is that I can't edit a ref in a section, but that's fairly common with re-used refs anyway if they are defined in a different section. And of course there are the various other styles of references allowed too, Harvard etc, where I sometimes struggle to match the style of existing refs... or to patch up the problems when refs are broken, perhaps because someone's imported a chunk of content carelessly without noticing that it breaks some refs. Hmm, I suppose that's quite a strong argument against LDR ... But can VE handle Harv style references, if a VE editor wants to modify one of those? I really don't know, having very little to do with either VE or Harv refs!(For info, pinging only works if you add the ping and your signature in the same edit. Invitation to take part in a survey about medical topics on Wikipedia

Dear fellow editor,

I am Piotr Konieczny, a sociologist of new media at Hanyang University (and User:Piotrus on Wikipedia). I would like to better understand Wikipedia's volunteers who edit medical topics, many associated with the WikiProject Medicine, and known to create some of the highest quality content on Wikipedia. I hope that the lessons I can learn from you that I will present to the academic audience will benefit both the WikiProject Medicine (improving your understanding of yourself and helping to promote it and attract new volunteers) and the wider world of medical volunteering and academia. Open access copy of the resulting research will be made available at WikiProject's Medicine upon the completion of the project.

All questions are optional. The survey is divided into 4 parts: 1 - Brief description of yourself; 2 - Questions about your volunteering; 3 - Questions about WikiProject Medicine and 4 - Questions about Wikipedia's coverage of medical topics.

Improvements to Acorn range

Hi Duncan

I am considering doing work on the various Articles relating to the Acorn range of computers. There is so much overlap with BBC BASIC / BBC Microcomputer / Archimedes / RISCOS so it is a bit difficult to know where to start.

In October I put a note on the BBC BASIC Talk page so I think I might start there and overlap to the BBC Microcomputer where appropriate.

I got a BBC model B with FDD for myself. I had gone to an evening presentation at Coventry University (as it now is) before the micro was available, but I no longer have my handout. Because I wanted to know more about how RISC worked I bought an A440 as soon as one was available.

In my UK employment I was very involved in operating systems (on a mini / mainframe) doing various development such as a LAN (in assembler) and beta-testing new releases of the OS. I did visit Manchester from time to time when I interviewed potential employees in the 'milk-round' system at the university.

Now in Australia. I did some intermittent contract work with the Acorn range in local schools. One of my customers phoned me for support and had worked out that the system had given 2.5 years fault free use! Alongside this I did some teaching at tertiary level here for a few years. Now retired. Unfortunately all my BBC model Bs & Masters (about 50) and various 2nd processors (6502, Z80, 32016) together with most hard copy manuals were lost in a bushfire. Also a few were setup as HDD econet file servers (I had to fix a software bug in Acorn's HDD format program).

I am left with my original A440 plus 7 other A4x0, 2*A4000, 2*A5000, Risc-PC 610 also StrongARM with Intel chip and Yellowstone HDD interface, plus assorted documentation (eg various PRMs, Level 4 Fileserver, ANSI-C also fair selection of BBC model B/Master stuff).

I have programmed in BBC BASIC, ANSI-C and assembler (6502 & ARM) both for myself and for schools.

The BBC BASIC Article is such a jumbled mess, it really needs almost a complete re-write. I would like to reduce the proportion on the built-in assembler (the heading is BBC BASIC after all) and version identification. Rather to push it more to the BBC TV involvement in setting the requirements and selection of Acorn and how this gave us BBC BASIC with its good design. At the time similar computers were going into schools in France, Netherlands and other countries, so the UK was not on its own.

My knowledge covers the Acorn period, not the later developments.

Yes I have been considering that. A bit tricky as so much is a mess and doing small edits will necessarily introduce inconsistencies during the change. But many small is good advice and I have worked on Sophie Wilson in that way. The edit explanations can be better that way and linked to 'Talk'.
