As you probably already know, according to Wikipedia:Canvassing, contacting editors for the sake of voting is considered disruptive. Anyhow, I've changed my vote for the article we've been working on, so now there is consensus for merging. I expanded the article slightly, though mostly on the notes side. It seems that sources from just 5 years ago are showing signs of being outdated since the arrival of the Qawmi Education Board at that time greatly changed things around. Would you take a look at the notes I made on the Qawmi article? I'd like to know what you think. I added the number of Madrasahs at different levels under the board. But there seems to be a misprint in the newspaper (ref: dstar1), since it mentions sanaria ammah level twice - once as higher secondary(?) and again as secondary. Can you please check the numbers from the newspaper and other sources? 4 million is a huge number of students for any education system, but it makes sense, since the poorest of the poor who can't afford to send their children to regular schools, usually send them to these local religious schools. --Ragib (talk) 05:24, 25 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, great idea! I didn't really understand what those numbers meant when I first read it until I saw your list. I reorganized it into a table and found a better source. I think the University of Oxford is much more reliable than dstar :) And I would have never guessed that "Befaqul Mudarressin" is the same as "Wafaq ul Madaris"... I thought they were two separate things at first, but noticed surprising similarities in the numbers of schools at each level and then slowly tried to pronounce them with my American tongue. The more I look at it, the more I think the "Network of Schools" section in Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam is the Qawmi ed board and that the six-levels described in the Boro Madrasah article are the same six levels described in the Qawmi table. If that's the case, then the "beyond post graduate level" may actually not be a doctoral level but is rather the Tahfeezul Quran level. Bengali alphabet does not have any character for the Arabic character "wao", which sounds somewhere between "Wa" and "Va". So, in Bengali people use either ওয়া (Wa) or বা (Ba or Be) to transliterate this arabic sound. Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam

Hi Codehydro! Any idea what's behind the IP editor (119... and 202...) who keeps on introducing the same unsourced "history" essay? The material that's being introduced could make good copy with a bit of editing, but the IP editor seems to be unwilling or unable to cite any sources. Since the history of the madrassah spans over 100 years he/she must surely be using some reference material. I'd like to assume good faith but the editors determination not to enter into discussion has left me baffled. -- Timberframe (talk) 17:52, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • The IP is most likely associated with User talk:Bakrbinaziz whose account had been blocked for his stubborn editing. He seems to support the school as a former/current student if not work for the school, but that's my guess. I don't think the guy is necessarily bad, though apparently unable to understand Wikipedia policies. Moreover, I suspect his background and formal training seems to be faith-based (i.e. from single-source material like the Qu'ran or the school's homepage) rather than independent research based, thus he may lack the academic background for questioning primary sources and may lack the skill to look for information from outside sources. If my guess is correct, that could explain why he doesn't produce sources: he may simply not know how to search for them effectively. I could be wrong, but I am sympathetic with him despite my misgivings for his methods. Fortunately, he does seem to be using the article's talk page. I've learned not really to bother posting on his user talk, because he hardly looks at it (plus his IP may change before he ever sees the you have new messages note). Anyhow, I agree that there could be a lot of good information from the history he posted, though it needs to be reworked from a NPoV and properly sourced. The IPs are from Grameenphone's wireless Internet, which Bakr uses. That's why his IP changes a lot from time to time. I have pending-changed the article to guard against such ip edits. That makes a lot of sense. If s/he's simply copying some english publicity blurb, but doesn't actually have much grasp of the language, that may explain why s/he is reluctant to respond or discuss; could be that what discussion has taken place is through a translator. And indeed it may be that s/he simply doesn't understand the principles in operation here. I've only come into this as a pending changes reviewer; at first I thought we were dealing with vandalism but the persistance suggested otherwise and you've confirmed my impression. I'll step back and leave you to do what you can with the content. From what I can see. Those voters love picking on those Transformers related articles. I would love to help but there seems to be a work together cliche of delete, delete, delete. My main point of contention is that it's all happening too fast. DGG suggested that somebody could ask for a close of non-consensus for all the articles with a promise to renominate simply because it's unfair to attack them all at the same time... I would suggest that myself but I can't make that promise as I will be unavailable to do so... nonetheless, the transformers fiasco has inspired a new policy proposal idea at the village pump: WP:AFDPP. Looks good. I hope it works. I am not the one who is always against AFD's. But I think I am getting tired of hearing that's not perfectly sourced or it doesn't have sources to prove that it's notable so it must not be. It makes Wikipedia feel less like an encyclopedia of freedom. I think it's better to have a chance to expand Wikipedia then to keep AFDing every article that's not perfect for Wikipedia guidelines. It's just beginning articles. Tag it as Start Class or tag to improve the article or something. I wish somebody was good at finding sources in here because I most certainly am not. That is always the most hardest thing in Wikipedia. That's why Wikia is better in fictional information. They don't force things on you. Thank you for pointing out the deletion discussion. But I have a problem. The page on the "Eiffel Tower in popular culture" has been nominated for AfD (again). Because the page was kept after a discussion in 2007, that discussion is now closed. There is a rescue tag, but discussion is not possible. I have put my remarks on the discussion page.

Discussion is possible, but you have to click the link in the deletion tag that says "Please share your thoughts on the matter at this article's entry on the...". Thank you again. Sometimes I have difficulty understanding these discussions and the proper way to go about them. The discussion on this subject was closed so quickly I had only just realised that discussion was possible (I believe the whole disussion was over in a week). It also seems that this article comes up for deletion regularly. It is not linked to the main article it is a part of. Is linking and rewriting a way to prevent this cycle of deletion requests? Couple of points here, Firstly, I was either on NPP or looking for DYK-able articles (can't remember which) when I came across the article. Who created it was not relevant, and I never took any sort of aggressive stance at any time, so to accuse suggest I violated BITE, I felt, was inappropriate. On the other hand, you've done a good job and I'm willing to withdraw the AFD (which I will do when I get to a PC or someone else/you can do citing this post), in good faith. Thirdly, if you manage to expand it fivefold in prose and solve the citation needed (and self-referencing ("Milton cover" etc)) issues, please do nominate it for a DYK.

Infobox festival merger

Hi! The redirect from Template:Infobox festival to Template:Infobox recurring event caused a number of transclusions to break – see e.g. the markup "[[File:" and "|150px]]" in Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Undoing the merge is probably not a good idea because this would break the transclusions that have been fixed in the meantime. Just to notify you to be careful with such things. Oops, I thought I checked for such things; I actually tried to code the template so that it could accept parameters from both infobox festival and infobox recurring event without conflict, but I guess I missed one. Such mergers of independently developed templates can get quite complicated... What's trickier is that these bugs don't appear immediately since the MediaWiki software doesn't convert wiki-markup to html for an article until a new edit is made on the article itself. Thus, bugs in a template don't reveal themselves on the article even if you refresh the page since edits made on the template do not trigger MediaWiki to update the generated html file that's stored for each article that uses the template. In effect, the bug you saw in the Stratford Shakespeare Festival article was invisible until somebody else edited the page after the merger. Thanks, I may attempt Momo some time in the future, but I'll be too busy for a while so Momo will have to just be merged for now unless somebody else is willing to pour a few hours into research. I think I'm going to end my work on Appa now since I think it's good enough to stand as is. I haven't at all looked at the "In the animated series" section much, but, since you've actually seen the show, would you mind doing that part for me? I can't invest the time to watch the whole series, so it would be difficult for me to write on that section. I thought you might want to know about some upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, extending functionality with JavaScript, the future of ResourceLoader and Gadgets, the new Lua templating system, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

CSS Image Crop

Please help me with a template problem. The problem is with Template:Css Image Crop. The template will not function correctly when viewed on a mobile browser. Please stop. Your test is introducing nonsense code which break pages that use the position parameter. Pleas use the sandbox version instead, and use a copy of a working article to test the sandbox version.   • @Edokter: Do not worry, the code is intentionally nonsensical and any normal browser should ignore it. I positioned the code in such a way as to not affect how pages are displayed at all. The effect would only be visible in the source code of a live page, which is invisible to most folks. CSS hacks require code to be delivered in a certain location for it to work. Think of it as a barium enema--invisible to the naked eye, but tells a lot to a doctor who is looking at xrays for where the barium stops in the wiki image digestive tract. —CodeHydro 17:40, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

gold price chart

Hi there, I see you're a much more prolific contributor than I but I happen to be viewing the wiki on gold when I noticed a historical price chart that, at first glance, appeared to be very different from what my memory of gold prices told me. After viewing I noticed the scale was exponential rather than linear which struck me as unusual and perhaps less helpful to the average viewer, and also could present gold as a much more stable investment compared to actual values given the smoothness of the scale. For reference, the chart on the gold wiki and a typical 100 year chart (both inflation adjusted) I'm not trying to claim you have done anything improper, but I am curious as to why the scale is exponential rather than linear since price scales are typically linear, could you fill me in on what i'm missing here? thanks for your time. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tunafizzle (talk • contribs) 01:09, 27 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Tunafizzle: Glad you asked! To answer, notice how your example plots only adjusted prices whereas my chart also plots nominal (non-adjusted) prices in addition to the above. Though fine for plotting inflation-adjusted prices, a linear scale would be inappropriate for plotting nominal prices over any duration long enough for significant inflation. For example, given the thumbnail size of the chart as shown on Gold#Investment, it would take a change of ~$18 to shift the line by a single pixel on a linear scale. Thus, even though the increase of $14.33 meant a dramatic 68 percent change in 1934, a linear scale may show no increase at all. Secondly, though you are right that a linear scale can be easier to comprehend, a logarithmic scale is more useful for comparing relative change. For example, a hypothetical $50 price drop looks deceptively the same whether you started with $100 or $1000, even though the loss suffered by an investor would be 10 times bigger in the former (50% vs. 5%); in contrast, on a log scale, an investment gain of 10% looks just a sharp whether the initial price were $1 or $10000. Of course, an alternative could be to plot adjusted prices on a linear scale and nominal ones on a separate scale, however, I think having two scales could cause even greater confusion than what you experienced. Lua

Thanks for showing interest in Lua templates. :) We have a very wide range of things that need converting, from the relatively simple to the insanely complicated. Here are some examples of modules:

As for lists of modules to convert, we have Wikipedia:Lua/To do, although there are only a few modules there, and there are many many more that need converting. You can convert any template you feel would benefit from it, although be aware that there won't be any performance benefit from converting very simple templates, especially now that we have HHVM. If you want a good place to start, then your own Template:N-life might be a good place. If you want something that's a bit more widely transcluded, then you could try one of the templates on the to do list, or one of the following:

  • Template:Asbox - the meta-template that renders stub templates. Surprisingly complicated for its length, and used on 1,800,000 pages.
  • Template:If empty - very simple, but would be much more efficient in Lua.

Also, if you're looking for a list of templates ordered by complexity, you can find it at User:Darkdadaah/Parserfunctioncount, although it needs updating. Be careful to check that the templates are actually used before you convert them - some may be better off brought to WP:TFD rather than converted to Lua. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 15:38, 23 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A bit of praise and a request.

Hey Codehydro, awesome work with the brackets. The US Open testcase bracket looks fantastic!

I was just wondering if you could possibly take a request to make up a bracket? You're the only person whose User Page I've looked at that can develop templates. :)

I've spent a few hours (followed by a ragequit) trying to create a 5 Round Bracket, containing Byes (which when not containing data aren't shown) and seeds. Here is the current 4 Round Bracket template I often try and utilise (basically I've been trying to make a 64 team bracket out of copying and editing two 32s), but more often than not I end out deleting the wrong line here and there and the whole bracket ends out like this [2]. :P

  • Worked awesomely, man. The only problem I came across was caused by me and not the module itself. Hahaha. Typical human error. Anyway, just curious, as to how many rounds this bracket can actually successfully run. I got it to work with 64 teams, I believe the tennis one is 128 from memory? (I'm not a huge tennis buff, but I think most majors are 128?) Provided they'd fit and it wouldn't look stupid, can it run 256, 512 or even 1024? How high can it go? :P

  • @J man708:Given unlimited memory, the limit is the biggest integer that is power of 2 available in the Lua language, which I believe is 2^46 or about 70 trillion. But because Wikipedia limits us to 50MB of memory per page, probably about 1024 (or 2048 if you skip a lot of matches). In any case, the real limit is in how much advertising money the sport can make as the cost of hosting an sporting event involving a number of teams anywhere near the memory limit is probably beyond the reach of even Bill Gates.... By the way, I simplified the match skipping on your template to use a feature which is not currently documented (it's one of the things I wanted to announce when the module goes Beta, so you're getting a special preview ;)). Your recent change to Module:Asbox

Please be more careful with editing major modules like Module:Asbox, especially without double-checkiong your work immediately. Your reent edit actually prevented all stubs from being categorized. It was simple enpugh to check - all you needed to do was null-edit a single stub article, and make sure it stayed in stub categories - which this time it wouldn't have. עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 09:07, 8 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Od Mishehu: Oh dear... while it's no excuse, I believe the Template:Asbox/testcases mislead me into thinking that the categories would work in article space. I had reviewed all testcases, userspace, and several actual stub templates. Thought I checked article space, but I guess I must have misremembered my check on the 'article emulation' testcase as having done on it on actual articles. (The article emulation check showed categories because template space behavior was unaffected). Unfortunately, there's no way to make a 'testcase' in article space... this template is so complicated... Knockout template problem

Hey Codehydro, I've come across an issue with the Round N template 1995–96 NSL Cup. Adelaide City and Canberra Cosmos played their Round of 16 fixtures and were given a bye past the Quarter Final stage straight into the Semi Finals. @J man708: I just noticed that the template was manually bolded and that the scores were manually summed. Cleaned it up for you. The only difference is that intermediate games are not bolded and have a thinner border between them. I did that thinking that most brackets showed the winner's scores bolded in each individual leg, which apparently isn't the case. I think that the current set up is fine. I just must've had a senior moment or some shit. It's good to know an idiot like myself could figure the new template system out and work out a way to make that work. Don't beat yourself up. It's on me for not updating the doc page, which does not talk about node functions nor anything about the +sum switch. Also, your confusion probably came from how individual legs are bolded when the final score box is not a sum of the previous boxes, such as in Module talk:RoundN/testcases/5. In tennis, it is the total number of sets won that determine who wins, not the sum of the scores. Or let's put it this way: let's say a round of tennis has 3 sets, and player A scored 99, 0, 0 for each set and player B scored 0, 1, 1; team B wins even though team A has a much higher sum. In your case, it really doesn't who won each leg since it's all about the sum of the score. In short, the bold intermediate legs only when winning that leg matters more than how many points were scored in that leg. —CodeHydro 16:17, 17 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! I'm trying to adapt Module:Asbox to Latvian Wikipedia. I'm not so good at Lua, so I have some minor problems. So my question is - is it possible to set new parameter (args.biography), so if it is set (that is, in stub template there is |biography=yes), there is another string instead of this one: 

Buffer'This':_(args.subject):_(args.article or 'article'):_(args.qualifier)' ',--space
' is stub.',

The desired result would be something like this:

  • PS: If Latvian grammar is different, just remember that you can put almost anything as subject or qualifier. Subject goes before "article" and qualifier goes after, i.e. if you want, you can flip them and put what normally is a subject in the qualifier param and the qualifier in the subject param. @Edgars2007: where is the template for biographies? I don't see a template asbox in the latvian wiki... show me example of both. Until I see exactly how they look different, I can't help. In other words, give a me a sample code with all sample parameters and then give me a full final string that you want rendered, that is:

You don't see English wiki using "These Lativian biographies are stubs"... each stub tag should be to each article by itself... if Latvian wiki has an existing stub template that does not follow this standard, then perhaps you shouldn't encourage it but instead put some kind of note on the bad template and said that it is being depreciated and that others should rewrite the stub notices to match the new form? —CodeHydro 16:30, 25 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Latvian and English language are quite different. It isn't so easy, your suggested form (or anything else, which uses the same words as in the standart (Šis, aizmetnis)) won't work. @Edgars2007: Look at second example in lv:Moduļa diskusija:Asbox/Testi--is that what you are looking for? I edited the code as you requested, though I would suggest a different parameter name other than biography to make it more generic... for example, plural or singular = yes. @Edgars2007: You're welcome. And it doesn't work because args.article or '%s' is conditional. In other words, the or '%s' part is only read if the |article= parameter is not used. Hey Hydro, I messaged you quite some time ago about knockout competition bracket templates... Well, I have another question for you. The 1987 NSL Cup tournament contained single knockout matches, and a home and away final match. Also, the lack of information available for this topic makes the page exceptionally bland looking, I know. :P But anyway, is there a command that I can input which will allow for a two match final, single match knockout system, while maintaining teams automatically entering into the second round of the template? ThoughtAudio Review Request

I am seeking independent and neutral viewpoints on the article ThoughtAudio, which is being considered for deletion. Xander, thank you so much for your participation in this matter. I was not aware of the false "Notability" debate until it hit me so hard and I began giving it time after being targeted by Ningauble. Seems that people are awfully anxious to be rid of "minor," but valuable, pieces of humanity's knowledge base by definition and rule. Guess I may become involved, although I tend to keep my head buried in the popularization of the history of science and mathematics (and interweaving these with the humanities) at Wikquotes. Extremely impressed with your multi-talents in the arts, literary and programming fields. You seem to be approaching polymath status, and I admire you for your good works. I also admire your mission statement, "Even though I love languages, I study them in order to shatter them. ...illuminating all creation... in every dimension..." and your creative writing... Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

  • @Davidwr: Thank you checking. The edit is fairly harmless though doesn't do anything either. Your addition of ";" after the last item in CSS is unnecessary because that symbol is defined as a separator; its sole purpose is to separate one declaration from the next and if there is no next declaration then it is unnecessary. Here's the documentation on how to use CSS declarations from W3C--the organization which defines the CSS standards. Notice how in their example, they do not place a semi-colon after the final declaration. Adding an extra semi-colon at the end of a list only just slightly increases the size of the page by one byte each time it's done (and multiplied by the number of times this template is used). For example, your change would increase the download size of Module:Buffer/doc by about 300 bytes without any beneficial effect on the rendering of that page. That said, nowadays even a thousand bytes is rather trivial so thus your edit is harmless. —CodeHydro 11:03, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Suppose this is according to the UEFA Champions League concept. Teams play each twice, once at home, once away. Team with the most goals in total over 2 matches proceeds. In case both teams tie on total goals, the team with the most away goals proceeds. In "match 1" and "match 3" the result is as expected. Team "B" is bolded. In "match 2" however, no team is bolded because of the 4 4 in the fourth column (third scorebox column). But team "C" should be bolded because they scored 1 away goal and team "D" 0.

Suppose the 8 boxes for a match are:

  • @Sb008: Two issues about hard coding that suggestion into RoundN. First, is that non-UEFA tournaments may not have the same way of handling tiebreakers. Maybe somewhere would favor the home goals instead of away? Second, is that there's no way of knowing which round is the away round for which team; the numbers themselves don't say and, looking only at the module input, I could easily interpret the 2nd game of match 2 as Team D's away game, (and that team D got 4 away goals versus team C's 3 away goals, and so team D won). That said, my suggestion is to simply manually bold the name of winner manually with wikimarkup. The sum box won't be bolded, but the bold team name should be obvious enough (as well as advancement to the next round). Optionally you can throw in a ref note?

Thx for replying. It's common practise to list the teams in accordance with the first leg. So, team "C" listed 1st and team "D" listed 2nd (for match 2) means "C" played the first leg at home. I don't know any format (which doesn't mean there isn't one) where in case of a tie, the team with the most home goals will proceed. It's away goals because it's considered harder to score an away goal than a home goal. And it's not just UEFA (actually FIFA) rules, it applies for handball as well 2008–09 EHF Champions League#Qualification_Round (1st match listed, Kaunas 32 away goals and Brest only 27) and probably more sports. There aren't that many sports where they use a 2leg knockout system. But in regular leagues it's commmon. The ranking is in general based on: most points, best goal difference, most goals scored for all matches, hth points, hth goal difference, hth away goals. Using wikimarkup is only partly possible. I can only bold the teambox but not the sumbox. Of course, I can solve that too by not using |bold_winner=high at all and using |score-boxes=3 instead of |score-boxes=2+sum. But I lose the advantage of using |bold_winner= and have to fill in the agg. score manually, only cause of 1, maybe 2 matches in a bracket. Would |boldmatch10=1 or |boldmatch10=2 (where 10 is the matchnumber like in "skipmatch" and "1" to indicate the 1st team listed in match 10 and "2" to indicate the 2nd team listed ) be an option? --Sb008 (talk) 17:06, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Sb008: Hmm, I'm still reluctant to code it so that it assumes the top team is playing the home game in the first round because that practice, while perhaps common, probably isn't universal. For example, in match 3, if team C had played in match 1 instead, often times Team C would be listed on top because match 1 is above match 2 regardless of who played home in the first round (just going with the flow of the table). And often times the flow is dictated by which match was played first, but home or away may be decided by a coin flip. Perhaps the solution that gives the user the most control is that, where there is a tie, the sum box would be bolded if the team name is bolded via wikimark up. In other words, by my adding bold text to Team C, it would also make the sum box bold too. Does this solution work for you? The "match X" strings I only used to indicate which match I'm talking about. Normally there's a date at that position. If someone would swap "match 1" and "match 2", and keep "match 3 as is, he/she created n incorrect bracket. The first team listed in "match 3" has to be from the topbranch and not the bottombranch. Only if team "C" would be, the home team in the 1st leg of "match 3", "match 1" and "match 2" would need to be swapped. Frankly, I've never seen someone making the mistake you describe. Note, I don't claim it doesn't exist, only that I've never seen it. And implementing it as I suggested only forces people to create a correct bracket. Matches have to be swapped so often, because you can tell only after the draw who is going to play who and who and who will be the home team in the 1st leg. For example UEFA Champions League 2020/21 Knock-out phase. The boxes for 2nd and 3rd round are intentially kept hidden, cause until the draw it's unknown who will play who and showing the boxes already, would imply you already know who's potentially playing who. Luckily the draw for the 2nd round up till the final are at the same time. The draw of the 3rd round will be, the winner of match X against the winner of match Y, where the winner in match X will be the home team in the 1st leg. Similaar like in a seeded tournament (e.g. Wimbledon). The only difference is that in a seeded tourmament there're no draws. The full bracket is known upfront based on the seeds. Have a look at {{64TeamBracket}} where the seeds are filled in. Names are filled in, in the 1st round, based on the players seed, and you can tell exactly who might meet who in the 2nd, 3rd round etc. --Sb008 (talk) 14:50, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Orphan function in RoundN

The orphan function doesn't appear to be working in Ice hockey at the 2022 Winter Olympics – Men's tournament#Bracket. The teams are reseeded between the quarterfinals and semifinals. The node functions were something extra I threw on RoundN because I wanted to make the module more customizable but I never really finished implementing them because at the time nobody used them. In the meantime, you may be able to work around it by nesting multiple RoundNs in a table like so?

Problems with transclusion
