Sejak akhir abad kesembilan belas, pada masa pemerintahan rezim Presiden Porfirio Díaz (1876–1911), dua negara tersebut memiliki hubungan ekonomi dan diplomatik yang erat. Pada masa kepresidenan Díaz yang panjang, Meksiko membuka investasi asing dan para wirausahawan AS berinvestasi dalam pertambangan dan pertanian. AS memainkan peran penting dalam Revolusi Meksiko (1910–20) dengan tindakan langsung pemerintah AS dalam mendukung atau membangkitkan dukungan faksi-faksi revolusioner.
