สกุลโปตาโมไทรกอน เป็นปลากระเบนสกุลหนึ่งที่มีจำนวนสมาชิกมากที่สุดในวงศ์ปลากระเบนหางสั้น (Potamotrygonidae) ใช้ชื่อสกุลว่า Potamotrygon (/โป-ตา-โม-ไทร-กอน/) โดยมาจากภาษากรีก (Ποταμός; potamos) แปลว่า "แม่น้ำ" และภาษากรีกคำว่า "trygon" แปลว่า "ปลากระเบน"[1]

พบกระจายพันธุ์ในพื้นที่แหล่งน้ำจืดของหลายประเทศในทวีปอเมริกาใต้ อาทิ บราซิล, เปรู, โคลอมเบีย, เวเนซุเอลา, อาร์เจนตินา, เอกวาดอร์, ปารากวัย มีลักษณะทั่วไปเหมือนปลากระเบนสกุลอื่นในวงศ์นี้ คือ ลำตัวเป็นทรงกลมคล้ายจานหรือแผ่นซีดี หางมีขนาดสั้นไม่ยาวเหมือนปลากระเบนในวงศ์ปลากระเบนธง (Dasyatidae) โคนหางมีเงี่ยงที่มีพิษอยู่ 2 ชิ้น และมีหนามแหลมบริเวณโคนหางไปจนถึงเงี่ยง ปลายหางมีแผ่นหนังบาง ๆ เป็นริ้ว ๆ อยู่ มีสีพื้นลำตัวและมีจุดหรือมีลวดลายหลากหลายมาก แตกต่างกันออกไปตามแต่ละชนิด [2] มีความกว้างของลำตัวตั้งแต่ 1 ฟุต ไปจนถึง 1 เมตร หากินตามพื้นท้องน้ำ นาน ๆ ทีจึงจะว่ายขึ้นมาหากินบนผิวน้ำบ้าง ซึ่งอาหารหลักได้แก่ ครัสเตเซียนชนิดต่าง ๆ รวมทั้ง ปลาขนาดเล็กกว่า

ปลากระเบนในสกุลนี้นิยมเลี้ยงกันเป็นปลาสวยงาม เนื่องจากมีความสวยในสีสันและลวดลายซึ่งเป็นเอกลักษณะเฉพาะไม่เหมือนกับปลากระเบนประเภทอื่น อีกทั้งยังสามารถเพาะขยายพันธุ์ในสถานที่เลี้ยงได้อีกด้วย และสามารถผสมข้ามสายพันธุ์ก่อให้เกิดเป็นสายพันธุ์ใหม่ ๆ ได้อีกหลายชนิด[3]
