യഹൂദമത നേതാവും, നിയമജ്ഞനും, പ്രവാചകനും, സൈന്യാധിപനും ആയി കരുതപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു ജൂത ഇതിഹാസ കഥാപാത്രമാണ് മോശ . (ഈജിപ്തിൽ ) അടിമത്തത്തിൽ ആയിരുന്ന യഹൂദരെ അവിടെ നിന്നും മോചിപ്പിപ്പ് വാഗ്ദത്തനാടായ കനാനിലേക്ക് നയിച്ചത് മോശയാണെന്നു യഹൂദന്മാർ കരുതുന്നു.
പഴയനിയമത്തിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ അഞ്ചു പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ (തോറ) മോശ എഴുതിയതാണെന്നു പാരമ്പര്യമായി വിശ്വസിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. സീയോൻ പർവ്വതത്തിൽ വച്ച് മോശയ്ക്ക് യഹോവയിൽ നിന്നു അരുളപ്പാട് ഉണ്ടായെന്നും പത്തു കല്പനകൾ അടക്കം ഉള്ള നിയമങ്ങൾ മോശക്ക് ലഭിച്ചു എന്നും യഹൂദർ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.
യഹൂദർ മിസ്രേം ദേശത്ത് അടിമയായിരുന്ന സമയത്ത് ലേവി ഗോത്രത്തിൽ പെട്ട അമ്രാം, യോഖേബേദ് എന്നിവരുടെ മകനായാണ് മോശ പിറന്നതെന്നു ബൈബിൾ പറയുന്നു. ബൈബിളിലെ ആദ്യത്തെ അഞ്ചു പുസ്തകങ്ങളിൽ മിസ്രേമിൽ ജനിച്ച് 120 ആമത്തെ വയസ്സിൽ മരിക്കുന്നതു വരെയുള്ള മോശയുടെ ജീവചരിത്രവും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.
