Kenneth Earl Burrell (né le 31 juillet 1931 à Détroit) est un guitariste de jazz américain.

Biographie

Kenny Burrel est le fils William Henry et d'Elizabeth (Day) Burrell^[1], deux musiciens qui lui feront découvrir la musique^[2].

Il apprend la guitare à partir de douze ans^[3].

Après ses études secondaires, il entre à la Wayne State University où il obtient un Bachelor of Music (en) (équivalent d'une licence délivrée par le Conservatoire national supérieur de musique).

Il commence sa carrière au début des années 1950. Il joue avec de nombreux musiciens de jazz (Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson, Benny Goodman, Jimmy Smith, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, Gil Evans, Chet Baker) et enregistre plus d'une centaine d'albums. Depuis 1978, Il enseigne aussi l'histoire du jazz à l'université de Californie à Los Angeles^[4]^,^[5].

Style

Le jeu de Kenny Burrell se caractérise par sa fluidité, sa maîtrise de l'harmonie et le renouveau du blues pour l'incorporer dans le jazz moderne^[6].
