User talk:WilliambHere are some links I find useful
Cheers, Sam [Spade] 04:06, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC) AbciximabHi William, would you mind adding talk page messages to the bottom of the page? You don't seem to have a userpage yet.
English CongregationI have no reason to doubt that this is a real subject, the reason English Congregation was deleted was because it consisted solely of a category link: this constitutes speedy deletion. Can you please add the category link only after you have started the actual article? many thanks. -- Graham ☺ | Talk 13:21, 4 Jul 2004 (UTC) Blue-crowned Hanging ParrotHi, I've reformatted this so that it looks like other bird species articles. Please note that there is a convention that there is a lower-case redirect for bird species articles (I've done it for this one) jimfbleak 15:02, 6 Jul 2004 (UTC) Manta raysHi. Why did you blank the redirect at Manta rays? RickK 05:56, Jul 9, 2004 (UTC) For patent trash like this, it's best to go for {{delete}} if you want to get it speedy deleted. However, there does appear to be an amethyst python (without the rainforest bit), so it does have potential. Noisy 09:20, 11 Jul 2004 (UTC) I don't understand why you removed the new taxobox layout on the papilio page? Is it because I omitted some levels of classification? Otherwise the use of templates makes it much easier to read and to update... Azhyd 16:35, Aug 3, 2004 (UTC)
For bird articles at least, the de facto practice over a couple of thousand articles is to not include domain or subkingdom. In the absence of any agreement on Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Tree_of_Life to change this, I've reverted a bunch of your edits. jimfbleak 05:35, 8 Aug 2004 (UTC) Superfluous ranksWilliamb, you left these on my user page: What to you mean by superfluous ranks!!! Seems to me you have taken on a lot on yourself to call what other people spend time adding superfluous. I have been spending quite a lot of time putting them in and I really don't feel like going back and doing them again but I will. Williamb 07:14, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC) I don't think ranks are superfluous, I think they are CORRECT. Look I've spent several months now researching and getting the info on all the subdivisions of the taxobox correct, and I've been adding them for over a month now. Suddenly you come along after all that work and say they are superfluous. I think the ranks are of interest of themselves and find this whole tendency to dummy down irritating to say the least. Williamb 07:46, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC) It's not a matter of dumbing things down. High intermediate ranks shouldn't be repeated on low rank taxon pages. To say that insects belong among the Hexapoda is important, to point out that copper-wing butterflies like every single one of their relatives belong to the Hexapoda is redundant. What is more, most such ranks are highly variable - you've surely noticed that things like domain Eukaryota, subkingdom Metazoa, subphylum Hexapoda and the like are not accepted by all sources. When they change - when wikipedia started, subphylum Uniramia would have been a better option for insects - every page that uses them has to be changed, and the extremely limited value they provide isn't worth that. It's a matter of not copying information needlessly. In contrast, low-level refinements provide additional information pertinent to the particular species or genus under discussion, and you'll note I haven't removed any. This is not simply something I decided, this is the concensus wikipedia has been working with, and while I'm sorry for lost work it would be appreciated if you could respect it. Josh 09:54, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC) From what I've seen there doesn't seem to be much of a concensus at all, and I disagree. It's my time and energy involved, but if my contributions weren't needed then I guess I can do other things. The world is huge. I know it's your time and energy, but I think the changes are harmful, since the propagate semi-standard systems. The concensus is real, followed on most articles and noted on wikipedia:WikiProject Tree of Life, but if you think it should be reevaluated that would be the place to discuss it. I'd argue for the current system, but I'm happy not to change anything for the time being. Please don't think your contributions are unappreciated - as I said, the low-level ranks are useful, and you deserve kudos for finding them. Josh 10:53, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC) *I know that I use suborder and superfamily a lot to get my bearings in the taxobox as to where exactly a new addition belongs. Williamb 23:29, 10 Aug 2004 (UTC) Incidentally the new taxoboxes are using "Insecta" instead of "Insect"a etc. for arthropoda and all kinds of other stuff too, and it is adding huge amounts of double directs that have to be fixed. Could that be fixed at the template level? {{Taxobox| color = pink | name = Sample | classis = [[Insect]]a }} There doesn't seem to be any reason the new taxoboxes are doing things that way - the sample at right works just fine. I think it's just that people are reconstructing them without concerning themselves with the links. Josh 03:36, 11 Aug 2004 (UTC) Race (U.S. Census) linksPlease don't change the links to Race (U.S. Census) being made by KevinBot. Even though all of the links currently redirect to the same Race (U.S. Census) article, using redirects allows the possibility to create separate articles on each in the future. older≠wiser 13:16, 17 Aug 2004 (UTC) SigningWilliamb, you didn't sign your post on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/The real Howard Stern. I also believe that you should have done more research before writing about Camberwell beauty. Your version of the article claims that it is spread only in Central or (Southern?) Europe and rarely found elsewhere. Wrong! How about the North America or Siberia? Also the butterly is spread far norther than you write. They can hibernate in the winter in places like Finland and Sweden. They belong to the first Spring butterflies there. No mention of the species' common name in American English. And you also wrote that the species was first discovered in Camberwell - although it is only rarely found in UK... Pretty Anglocentric discovery. If you had done a Google search before writing, you would have immediately noticed that your material is essentially flawy. -Hapsiainen 19:39, Oct 9, 2004 (UTC) Wikipedia studyWould you be interested in being interviewed about your work on the Wikipedia? The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
OR
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" with "{{MultiLicensePD}}". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk) Hi, I've started an article on Pierinae, as it was on the most-wanted list. How are you? I will leave Domingo Trujillo out of the recent deaths page, but only because I don't like revert wars. Its all cool. But the thing is, he had newly found fame. He wasn't like I think you stated or someone else (if it wasn't you forgive me), "someone who appeared on the stands several times". He was a good friend of Luisito Vigoreaux and had been appearing at his show, joking around and having a good time, for one month already. WAPA-TV is Puerto Rico's largest television station, seen by almost four million, and now by Hispanics in the United States. So he was relatively new, but he had found fame. He had been famous far longer than that 15 year old who was tragically shot and who is on the list too! "La Comay" and all other WAPA shows had his photo shown yesterday at the end. So, you see where Im coming from? Celebrity is something that is relative. Remember, someone who is famous in Micronesia may not be known at all in England but that doesn't make the person less of a celebrity. For Domingo Trujillo, sadly, his fame was short lived as he had been appearing doing funny commentary at Vigoreaux's show for only about a month. Well, amigo, take care! I hope we can become friends! God bless you! I believe it is a mistake to treat it like it is another given name, not part of the surname. Yes, it makes the "A" section of categories about as long as the portions for b-z. That's life. Unfortunately, I also think trying to shoehorn Arabic names into the given-name, surname hierarchy we use is a mistake. Some of the things that look like surnames to us are actually a tribal name, or village name. But, it would be extremely difficult to reverse the current convention. -- Geo Swan 11:58, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
Thai namesNo category sorting workaround is needed on Thai names, like Cherd Songsri. If he were referred to by just one name, it would be Cherd, not Songsri. I apologise that I can't explain why that is or point you towards a policy guideline on Wikipedia that explains this better, but that is just the way it is. I appreciate your efforts. Happy editing. If you don't like seeing dates written in the "14 July" format you can change your preferences so that they show up in the U.S.-style "July 14" format. All you need to do is link dates in articles by putting square brackets around them and they will be displayed according to your preferences. This feature exists for a reason. People in different parts of the world employ different styles of date presentation. Please don't try to impose the format used in the United States on articles regarding European topics, as you did to the article on Jürgen Kießling. Speedy deletion of Edna (given name)A tag has been placed on Edna (given name) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.
