Working in Wikipedia

If you don't have access to a reference, please don't make claims that X is not supported by the reference. If you can't access a source you should ask if someone else has it and could provide it to you. (i got the Houglum book from google books, so you should be able to as well). I literally said "or at least the associated quote." What do you think the quote is supposed to be, if not support for the sentences the citation is attached to? Oh, I totally acknowledge that I didn't originally check the source myself... because I was talking about the quote attached to the reference. If the quote was just removed entirely, I wouldn't even have commented, but a large quote attached to a reference should support something in one of the three spots using it as a citation. Perhaps it was added as support of something else which was subsequently removed? Anyway, when you quoted a different part of the two referenced pages, I suggested changing the quote. Hi Tronvillain: That ED site certainly contains blatant, over-the-top, absurdly exaggerated statements about people and topics, in an attempt to appear humorous, I suspect. However, certainly on the JzG page, it provides a series of links to real, existing Wikipedia web pages / discussion pages that contain highly profane quotes authored by the admin. I'm sure I'm not mistaking what I'm seeing with my own eyes on Wikipedia discussion pages. So there evidently appears to be absurd falsehoods mixed with sprinkles of truth. Reason for fixing edit to The Daily Beast

I undid that edit because The Daily Caller is an adequate source to establish something as subjective as it being described as liberal - there are countless other instances of it being described as such (usually by various conservative sites). Horizon edit

I added information I compiled from several articles on the calculation of the distance to the horizon. You deleted it stating it was an unsupported opinion. But as a traumatic brain injury survivor, I don't understand things all the time. Can you explain what that means to you and why you applied it to my addition. What I read concluded that no equation is accurate enough to calculate the distance to the horizon because there are too many variables. The effects of atmospheric refraction are discussed both at the beginning of the section, and in the subsection below. The assertion "The earth is circular so no matter what way we look the curve should be visible in this coastal photo, but the horizontal line separating the ocean from the sky appears just as it is, a horizontal line with no visual evidence of a curve." is simply inaccurate - at sea level on a sphere, the math does not predict any visible curvature of the horizon line. --tronvillain (talk) 17:30, 28 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Chaos magic page

Hi Tronvillian. Firstly, the strong feeling I'm getting is that you don't want to discuss the chaos magic page anymore, so I'm sorry for messaging you about this. However, I feel I should canvas your opinion, because it was you who put the "fringe theory" tag on the page in the first place. I've spent some time adding some new content to the page, under the "concept and terminology" section, in an attempt to give adequate weight to the mainstream view. I've tried to address this from the historical, theological, anthropological and psychological perspectives, and from the point of view of occultism more generally. Only then have I moved on to discussing the chaos magic viewpoint. Would you mind casting your eye over it and saying whether or not you think the mainstream view is addressed adequately, and -- if so -- whether you think the tag should now be removed? Thanks for your cmts. I agree Uscinski and Parent have other purposes for their research. But rather than pursue any remaining issues on that thread, I'd rather ask for your thoughts on the following, if that's ok.

The term 'conspiracy theory' has been and continues to be used in legal contexts, e.g., as

  • From Yanev, L. D. (2018) Theories of Co-perpetration in International Criminal Law. Brill. p. 86: quoting Robert H. Jackson, U.S. Supreme Court Justice who helped draft the London Charter of the International Military Tribunal, which created the legal basis for the Nuremberg Trials. He then served in Nuremberg, Germany, as United States Chief Prosecutor at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg: “The American proposal is that we utilize the conspiracy theory by which a common plan or understanding to accomplish an illegal end by any mean, or to accomplish any end by illegal means, renders everyone who participated liable for the acts of every other.”[Minutes of Conference Session of July 4, 1945. As opposed to the political context, where the term is used predominantly and perhaps exclusively as pejoratives by opponents, in the legal context it is used by proponents or adjudicators in a non-negative manner.

It might justify a section on niche use as a legal term to simply refer to conspiracies, but deducing that from those two references seems like original research. Occasional use differing from standard usage doesn't change the standard definition. Thx, will consider. Related and putting together what I take from your position with other ascriptions taken from the literature, is the following a fair characterization of 'conspiracy theory' as used in this article:
  1. (Almost) never established as fact.
  2. If established as fact, referred to as 'the x conspiracy', not as 'the x conspiracy theory".
  3. Involves large numbers of people in positions of authority (governmental, science, …).
  4. Labeled as 'conspiracy theory' by detractors, not by proponents.

Old school computer games

Hey there, thanks for all your hard work on Airmail Pilot!  :) That one was actually on a list of articles as part of a project to get cover images on all video game articles, but you went above and beyond with that one. You'll notice there's also Strategy & Brain Games, collecting Brain Games-I and Strategy Games-I. I just wanted to say, although I brought some articles to you above with problems, as I have been adding reviews to early-80s games and starting little stubs with those same reviews, I have also come across some stuff that I felt was really missing from WP. In particular, for one of my favorite VG publishers from the late 80s and early 90s, I was able to add some good stuff regarding earlier works from SSI. I started The Shattered Alliance, Torpedo Fire, and The Warp Factor for example, and an article for the RapidFire line, so anything you wanted to do on any of those would be much appreciated of course. :) I also note that Computer Conflict is currently unsourced, but most of the games on List of Strategic Simulations games from 1982 and earlier are looking OK. I tried making an article for Klondike Adventure[3], which is apparently a 1982 release by SoftSide's "Adventure of the Month Club", but the article was redirected to SoftSide before long. However, that article does not mention anything about an "Adventure of the Month Club" or the game Klondike Adventure (or, for that matter, Windsloe Mansion which I started at the same time under the same circumstances) so I am a bit mystified. Do you know of any sources that could be used to restore Klondike, and then improve Klondike and Windsloe, and if possible to get something on the Club in the SoftSide article? Hey man, although I have said it before plenty of times, first of all I want to say a huge thank you for everything you have done on the articles I started, and everything else you have done in general for old school video games.  :) Rather than keep bugging you about this game or that game, since you have really gotten involved with some and are making great progress on them, I am going to just leave you to work on what you want to your heart's content. I have compiled a list of what I have seen so far from Space Gamer's reviews into this user page: User:BOZ/SGVG. I created between half and 2/3 of those pages, and added notes about the review to the already-existing articles. You have been hard at work on the first two on that list for several days, so I am not about to stop you.  :) You can keep going down the list one at a time to work on them as much as you want, or you can skip around and pick up things you want to work on, and you can stop whenever you want and come back whenever you want. I will continue to update this user page whenever I have added new reviews, although I only have maybe a dozen issues or so to go through. Changes to Bob Readick article

I noticed that you reverted the change of date formats in Bob Readick with the explanation "place of birth does not constitute 'strong national ties' - retain established date but format".

I must be missing something, because when I read the article the only "national ties" that I see are American. He was born in the United States. He acted on radio programs in the United States. He also acted in Broadway plays (although your reversion eliminated that addition, along with his role in This Is Nora Drake on radio. If he has "strong national ties" to a country that uses British date formats, shouldn't that connection appear in the article?

Hi Eddie Blick. I don't recall removing any categories - I intended to just edit the dates and added the dmy template. Perhaps I wasn't editing the most recent version of the page (I was on my phone for a change). As for the dates, per MOS:DATEVAR, "The date format chosen by the first major contributor in the early stages of an article should continue to be used, unless there is reason to change it based on strong national ties to the topic or consensus on the article's talk page." Rejuvenate WikiProject Skepticism

Hello - my name is Susan Gerbic (Sgerbic) and I'm writing to you because at some point you joined Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism. This might have been months ago - or even years ago. With the best of intentions the project was created years ago, and sadly like many WikiProjects has started to go dormant. A group of us are attempting to revitalize the Skepticism project, already we have begun to clean up the main page and I've just redone the participant page. No one is in charge of this project, it is member directed, which might have been the reason it almost went dormant. We are attempting to bring back conversations on the talk page and have two subprojects as well, in the hopes that it might spark involvement and a way of getting to know each other better. One was created several years ago but is very well organized and a lot of progress was made, Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skeptical organisations in Europe. The other I created a couple weeks ago, it is very simple and has a silly name Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Skepticism Stub Sub-Project Project (SSSPP). This sub-project runs from March 1 to June 1, 2022. We are attempting to rewrite skepticism stubs and add them to this list. As you can see we have already made progress.

The reason I'm writing to you now is because we would love to have you come back to the project and become involved, either by working on one of the sub-projects, proposing your own (and managing it), or just hanging out on the talk page getting to know the other editors and maybe donate some of your wisdom to some of the conversations. As I said, no one is in charge, so if you have something in mind you would like to see done, please suggest it on the talk page and hopefully others will agree. Please add the project to your watchlist, update your personal user page showing you are a proud member of WikiProject Skepticism. And DIVE in, this is what the work list looks like [6] frightening at first glance, but we have already started chipping away at it.

The Wikipedia:WikiProject Skepticism/Participants page has gone though a giant change - you may want to update your information. And of course if this project no longer interests you, please remove your name from the participant list, we would hate to see you go, but completely understand.

ArbCom 2024 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2024 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 2 December 2024. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
