Happy New Year!
Hello BOZ:

Did you know ... that back in 1885, Wikipedia editors wrote Good Articles with axes, hammers and chisels?

Thank you for your contributions to this encyclopedia using 21st century technology. I hope you don't get any unnecessary blisters.

Again, it's still not helpful to add external links to "Reviews" for boardgames, especially when those links are to some kind of catalogue entry that just gives a neutral one-sentence description of the game and where to buy it from. That might be a useful source for production information about the game, but it's not a review.

A "Reception" section is definitely the right way to approach this. Belbury (talk) 11:10, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I moved those to the talk page in case they would be helpful at some point in the future. BOZ (talk) 14:21, 8 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Just noting here long after the fact, that "Reviews" sections can lead to good things: [1]. :)

HI BOZ

Happy New Year BOZ!
I hope 2024 will be an awesome year for you ! ^_^
Thank you for being on Wikipedia !

Restored pages and more

My congratulations on some of the pages you restored for Space Phantom and Solarr. As there is a AFD discussion for the fate of the Death-Throws, I ask that you help in transferring the information of it's members that redirect there to their respectful List of Marvel Comics characters pages like you did with the members of the Circus of Crime. As for your comment in the AFD discussion for Hidden races, I agree with your reply to me and that some of the information will have to be transferred to the target page in the spirit of WP:PRESERVE. Right? --Rtkat3 (talk) 02:58, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Judge Dredd sources

Hi BOZ! :) Do you see any sources for Judge_Dredd#Major_storylines? Was wondering can you help with this. Timur9008 (talk) 16:46, 21 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure where I might find them, but that does look like something worthwhile to find! BOZ (talk) 00:34, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've added one source there :) (that I found) Timur9008 (talk) 07:10, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

? Timur9008 (talk) 17:35, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I know that one will be primarily a challenge because of the name, if you search anything out using it's title you're going to find references to the movie of the same name, but this game is totally unrelated to the movie. Did you try cross-referencing with the name of the publisher? BOZ (talk) 00:02, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah Timur9008 (talk) 00:07, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, give me a little time to think about it. BOZ (talk) 00:10, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cunard do you see anything more about this game, maybe searching by its developer or publisher? BOZ (talk) 13:56, 5 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BOZ. Here are some sources about the subject:

  1. Lynch, Dennis (1988-10-14). "A 'Star Trek' game worthy of the name" (pages 1 and 2). Chicago Tribune. ProQuest 282611492. Archived from the original (pages 1 and 2) on 2024-02-06. Retrieved 2024-02-06 – via Newspapers.com.

The review notes: "Twice burned, I was a little wary when I loaded up Star Trek: First Contact (Apple II, IBM PC, $40), the just-released third text adventure in the series. But I got a pleasant surprise, Trekkies. The game is really quite good. First Contact has an intriguing plot. Starfleet Command picks up a superpulse originating from a faroff galaxy and signaling the presence of a heretofore unknown alien race. Your mission as Capt. James T. Kirk is to contact the aliens before the Klingons do. To avoid Klingon suspicion, you're sent on a cover mission to the coronation of the king of Gothica."

  2. Scorpia (October 1988). "The Enterprise Establishes "First Contact". The Latest "Star Trek Adventure"". Computer Gaming World. No. 52. pp. 16–17. Retrieved 2024-02-06 – via Internet Archive.

The review notes: "First Contact, third in the Star Trek series from Simon and Schuster, puts you once again in the role of Captain James T. Kirk, commander of the Enterprise. ... In spite of everything that seems to be happening. First Contact is actually a very easy adventure. Most of the situations generally require very little effort, a few actions at most, to resolve them. Even the end game, with its five puzzles to solve, doesn’t take too much effort. ... Plotting is very loose, and seems to have been designed to make it easier for the player to solve the problems, rather than to provide any real challenges. "

  3. "Star Trek: First Contact". Game Players. Vol. 1, no. 2. 1989-01-03. p. 103. Retrieved 2024-02-06 – via Internet Archive.

The article notes: "A mysterious pulse of cosmic rays, traveling at warp 34, has Starfleet totally baffled. The U.S.S. Enterprise is in the area and its commander. Captain James T. Kirk, is ordered to investigate. But Kirk must also complete his current mission. In deep space, beyond Starfleet robot scout ships, mineral-rich Gothica is celebrating the coronation of its young prince, Clavis. The Enterprise is carrying a diplomatic party to attend the ceremony. Establishing good relations with Gothica is imperative because the neutral planet lies in an area claimed by Klingons. "

  4. Donahue, Jeff (January 1989). "Star Trek: First Contact". Home Office Computing. Vol. 7, no. 1. Scholastic Incorporated. p. 94. Retrieved 2024-02-06 – via Internet Archive.

The review notes: "Trekkies will enjoy First Contact even though it falls short of its predecessor, Rebel Universe. It offers features we've come to expect from the Star Trek series (graphic depictions of key game elements and the ability to control crew members) in addition to new features such as the Captain’s auto-log and access to the Enterprise’s databanks."

  5. "Games Beyond Tomorrow". VideoGames & Computer Entertainment. April 1991. p. 84. Retrieved 2024-02-06 – via Internet Archive.

The review notes: "The same implementation team, with Subway Software assuming design duties, produced Star Trek: First Contact (Simon & Schuster for Apple II, Commodore 64, IBM PC). This tangled tale of an encounter with an alien race incorporates an upgraded version of the Kobayashi play system and adds to it a nice set of illustrations."

  6. "Aboard the Enterprise". VideoGames & Computer Entertainment. September 1990. p. 133. Retrieved 2024-02-06 – via Internet Archive.

The review notes: "Star Trek: First Contact (Simon & Schuster for IBM PC, Apple and Commodore 64) uses an upgraded version of the MicroMosaic interface to present story, characters and dialogue by Subway Software. Kirk and friends travel into Klingon territory to unravel the mystery of a space beacon that Starfleet believes is a calling card from a previously unknown intelligent race. Expanded options, better music and a set of fairly nice illustrations makes it a fuller play experience than Kobayashi Alternative."

Vulture

Can you add stuff about Earth-65B Vulture (photo only, the pages behind the photo has some info about him) and Earth-42 Vulture (He is only referenced in the movie through his two companies and mentioned indirectly by JJJ)?

Vulture (Blackie Drago) is mentioned to be existing in 1610B in ITSV

Also Earth-31913 universe's Vulture (Ik that it ain't a concept and just was an idea pitch but eh)

Great Library of Greyhawk

Hey there, BOZ!! Just wanted to say "hey"!

So, I'm sure you recall, but a few years ago, the Great Library of Greyhawk wiki on Caonfire! went down due to software not being updated, and a massive amount of spam accounts and spam articles.

Anyway, a few years ago (2018) the wiki was moved to a new host, and has been growing and flourishing over at Greyhawk Online. So, I thought I would invite you to visit us there, since you used to be pretty active on that wiki. ... we've even exported some of your edits from here on Wikipedia to be on the GLoG! We'd love to have a fan who's as great at writing and editing as you are back as a registered User on our wiki!

(Great Library link)

It'll be great to see you! Take care, and I hope you have a great day! — IcarusATB (talk) 15:13, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh thank you, that is awesome. :) BOZ (talk) 15:54, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@IcarusATB you might find my User:BOZ/DnD deletions useful for importing text from Wikipedia? Also, if you want to look up the redlinks from that page (deleted articles) you may find many of those on https://archive.org/ and lastly for anything you don't see there, I had created a D&D wiki on fandom.com a few years ago that I copied many deleted articles to if you want me to go and locate that link. BOZ (talk) 16:02, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, hiya, BOZ!!
As a matter of fact, I've used your deletions list and the WikiProject Dungeons & Dragons/Article alerts so many times!! 😅 We've also used "Deletionpedia" to save pages that've already been deleted. And sometimes, Archive.org (the Wayback Machine) is Incredibly useful!
I didn't realize that it was 'you who'd created the Fandom D&D Wiki!! A couple or few years ago, I "adopted" the Greyhawk wiki there, since it didn't have an "active" admin. So, we encourage fans to edit either of them. We like to encourage fan content on the Fandom site, too.
It's really great to hear from you and get a chance to talk to you directly. I don't know why I never took the time, before!—IcarusATB (talk) 16:27, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I created a fandom D&D wiki, not necessarily the fandom D&D wiki. :D I'll try to get a link to you this evening. It's not heavily edited at all, mostly because I gave up working on it during the quarantine. BOZ (talk) 16:29, 7 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

G.I. Joe articles

So, you have said that the G.I. Joe character articles I redirected need improvement. Thing is, I don't think there's that much that could be used to improve them. There are a lot of G.I. Joe characters, and most aren't going to be notable. 2605:B40:13E7:F600:4853:7CAA:3670:F77 (talk) 00:53, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for not replying sooner. To be honest, I did not think there was much of a point in discussing this with you, as I believed you were simply going to continue to edit war to get your way no matter what anyone else said to you. Since your IP range has been blocked for a week, hopefully when you come back you will figure out a better way to interact with other editors. BOZ (talk) 04:57, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Kitty Pryde

I listen to this soundtrack quite often, can recite most of the lyrics from memory. I don't know how to cite my own extensive knowledge on the subject. Why do you continue to remove this factual information?

Kitty Pryde is referenced in "Missing Link" by Del the Funky Homosapien and Dinosaur Jr, on the Judgement Night soundtrack. "..Bowing, praising, now when I phase in Like Kitty Pride City wide.." 2605:8D80:5C1:2D8A:4B81:8D8D:A391:EE92 (talk) 18:19, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

And why is this important enough to mention in the article at all? Please provide a citation to a reliable source who can indicate why this is important to mention in the article in the first place, and I will be happy to let it stand. BOZ (talk) 18:22, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1) it's just as important as mentioning the reference on Weezers blue album.
2) your request confuses me;
I could cite genius lyrics or AZ lyrics or a multitude of other lyric sites? However they won't make it any more, or less relevant and or "important" if you deem it not to be. 2605:8D80:5C1:2D8A:4B81:8D8D:A391:EE92 (talk) 18:43, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Citing the lyrics is not what I am talking about. If you can find an article from Rolling Stone or some other source that deals with music saying, "Oh wow, this song Missing Link, I love how they mention Kitty Pryde in the lyrics because that really brings attention to a popular comic book character." Something like that, to show why it is important. If no such source exists, then I don't see why we need to mention a very trivial name drop. BOZ (talk) 18:58, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
"In addition to assuming good faith, encourage others to assume good faith by demonstrating your own good faith. You can do this by articulating your honest motives and by making edits that show your willingness to compromise, interest in improving Wikipedia, adherence to policies and guidelines, belief in the veracity of your edits, avoidance of gaming the system, and other good-faith behavior. Showing good faith is not required, but it aids smooth and successful interactions with editors"
I feel this is an interesting tidbit of information. And truly believe any other person that happens to peruse the kitty pride page and comes across it might also think it's interesting, especially if they are a fan of hip hop or funk music.
also, the citation for the edit on "in the garage" by Weezer off of the Blue Album is literally genius lyrics, so why would it not be sufficient for Missing Link? is it because Weezer is white and Del is Black? 142.183.237.97 (talk) 19:16, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I actually went and removed the Weezer one as well, as that is equally trivial. BOZ (talk) 19:24, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok then. Thanks for the civil debate. I think both lyrical references ARE interesting. But you do your wiki cop thing. 142.183.237.97 (talk) 19:28, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Never said they weren't interesting, just that they are trivial. Plenty of trivial things are interesting. That doesn't mean we need to add every single thing to an article here. A mention like that to me would make more sense on an article about the songs themselves. BOZ (talk) 19:30, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Furthermore; if citations and trivial information are that much a cause of concern, I request you skim through the entire KP page right away because I see a lot of it, it's a GD free for all in there. Good day sir. 142.183.237.97 (talk) 19:51, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rhino, Shocker and Sandman

Aleksei was supposed to be in ITSV (616B) also and not just ATSV with the most comic book looking design to be in a movie He was supposed to appear in Peter B Parker's backstory along with Venom and Hulk He also is referenced to be a member of Sinister Six in Earth-42 (he owns - Rhino Casino)

Shocker appeared in ITSV in a photo in 1610B along with Hammerhead (who was in ATSV), Chameleon (who also was in ATSV) and Enforcers (Only as AU in ATSV, also Ox never appeared instead Big Man was a part of the team (Ox was in the concept art though)) and in ATSV as a prisoner from an unknown universe Shocker also exists in Earth-42, one of the villains who ain't a part of Sinister Six (his company isn't named in the movie and only the logo is seen)

Sandman is also referenced to be a member (also in concept arts) of the Sinister Six (he owns - The Sandman (seems to a bar or something), Sandman (a watch company) and Sandman Slots and Resort https://intothespiderverse.fandom.com/wiki/Earth-42 (all of their companies are there, Shocker's company's name is sepculative though) 122.171.21.196 (talk) 06:55, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Goblin and Doc Ock

616B Goblin aappears in the Peter's origin flashback scene (hand only) The main Goblin in ATSV is the one from the Atari game A variant of him from an unknown universe is seen above Gog with a glider in ATSV (doesn't match any of the concept arts by Kris Anka, so someone else had to have designed him). Also a glider (Unknown if it is 2099 like Vulture's Arm peice/Multifactor's Jaw or AU like the three Doc Ock tentacles, despite being in the concept art of the lab, ots the only thing not mentioned about). There one more supposed Goblin holding a pumpkin bomb (could also be Hobgoblin but seems like Jesús Alonso Iglesias was the only one who worked on Hobgoblin)

Doc Ock appears again in Peter's flashback as tentacles only and later in the flashback there's a photo of him along with Kingpin, Rose, Hammerhead, Mysterio and supposedly Silvermane, can't really tell (Tombstone and Goblin are also there, there are also some other unidentifyable photos) 12 different variants of Doc Ock appear (two as tentacles only) (one being comic book accurat-ish) (10 of them being Otto) appear as prisoners, one being Pirate Doc Ock who is female (Boomernag and Clam are also female in the movie btw) plus Superior Spider-Man (this varant uses tentacles instead of the normal arms). A pic of Lego Doc Ock appears on a newspaper and a hologram of 616 comic Dock Ock appears with the line from No Way Home He also is referenced to member of Sinister Six in Earth-42 (He owns two comapnies- Eight Ock and Oct 8). According to the concept art original instead of him and Rhino, Goblin and Mysterio were meant to be members 122.171.21.196 (talk) 07:17, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Draft categories

I'm fully aware of that template.

The thing is, however, it isn't the same amount of work either way: it takes more time to wrap categories in the template than it does to remove them: removing is just a handful of clicks on the minus signs in HotCat, and thus only takes a few seconds, while wrapping can be more complicated: it requires opening the page, finding the categories (which aren't always in the place they're supposed to be, because sometimes novice editors place them in unconventional places in the article, and sometimes there are even multiple groups of categories in more than one place in the page), and typing the template out by hand.

So categories that take just a few seconds to remove can take anywhere up to a full minute to wrap — but the polluted category reports only run once per week, meaning that by the time the report runs there are several hundred categorized drafts to clean up all in one shot. Which in turn means that it's already going to take me a few hours to get through all of them even the quicker way, and would take me days to get all of them cleaned up if I took the longer way. But I don't have a responsibility to dedicate days and days to the task without doing anything else, which means I need to be able to get in and out of each page in the absolute shortest amount of time possible.

I mean, sure, if one comes across just one or two categorized drafts, then taking a small amount of extra time to wrap them instead of removing them isn't that big a burden. But when one has to power through hundreds of categorized drafts all at once, the extra time piles up into a much, much longer project than anybody actually has a responsibility to take on. I've asked numerous times in the past for a bot to automatically disable categories on drafts (literally 90 per cent of the job would be eliminated just by a category-disabler bot running through Category:All content moved from mainspace to draftspace a couple times a day), so as to vastly reduce the amount of time that human editors actually have to invest in it — but it still hasn't happened, which means humans still have to do it. So those of us who take on the job have to be allowed to do whatever it takes to minimize the amount of time we actually have to devote to it. Bearcat (talk) 16:05, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Got it. I'll have to keep adding the template myself then. BOZ (talk) 16:41, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I should also add that sometimes people file drafts in categories that would be wrong ones even if the page were in mainspace — for example, just a few minutes ago I found a draft about a real-world park in Argentina filed in Category:Parks and Recreation, which is for the Amy Poehler sitcom and not for real-world parks. So that's not a category that would need to be left behind in disabled form, because the page wouldn't belong there anyway — and since editors frequently move drafts to mainspace themselves without waiting for AFC review, "just let the AFC reviewer figure out that the category is wrong" doesn't work as a solution to that issue either. So even if categories are just being disabled, sometimes removing some of them is still warranted anyway. Bearcat (talk) 16:50, 6 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you have a moment in the days to come, would be so kind as to help with restoring the purged entries of the different Mutants in the Morlocks and Acolytes category that have media appearances (like X-Men: The Animated Series, it's sequel X-Men '97, and Wolverine and the X-Men to name some examples) in them on their respectful List of Marvel Comics characters pages like I had to do with the Dark Riders. I'm just making a suggestion here if you are interested. --Rtkat3 (talk) 01:05, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Which characters were you thinking of? BOZ (talk) 01:29, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
To start, the Morlocks in question are Annalee, Ape, Berzerker, Healer, Mole, Scaleface, Tar Baby, and Tommy. If any of them haven't been redirected to the List of Marvel Comics characters pages prior to the purge and were just redirected to the Morlocks page, their information will have to be imported there in the usual attribute. --Rtkat3 (talk) 02:16, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's a bunch of them, and I'd be happy to help, but would you mind cutting down the list for starters, maybe the top 2 or 3 of them that would be most prominently featured to start with? Then we can look at the others later. BOZ (talk) 04:39, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I might get some of them done today with the first three names as a start. Then we'll do your suggestion. Rtkat3 (talk) 14:53, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK that's fine, just let me know which three you want to start with. BOZ (talk) 15:32, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm planning on starting with Annalee, Ape, and Berzerker. Rtkat3 (talk) 16:19, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I restored those three that you can work on them. I'll give it a few days, so please add sources so that no one will redirect them again. I can look at a few more maybe on the weekend or early next week. BOZ (talk) 17:50, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't think that you would restore their actual pages when I mentioned about restoring their entries at their respectful List of Marvel Comics characters pages which I did for those three. If anyone wanted their pages to remain, they would've had their sources found by people like @Higher Further Faster:, @Jhenderson777:, and @Toughpigs: did. I'll still work on restoring the entries of the other Morlocks in question on their respectful List of Marvel Comics characters pages and work on the redirects later. Rtkat3 (talk) 18:48, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I think I see what you mean now. Well, if no better sources can be found for these then they can be merged into the character lists. That shouldn't be an issue. BOZ (talk) 18:53, 1 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Category query

I'm surprised to find no categories for wargaming people: designers, artists, and publishers. There is a top level Category:Wargames and a sub-category Category:Wargamers, which is unpopulated and vague. Are you aware of anything? -- GreenC 15:23, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, but we sure could put something together! We have enough bio articles on here for wargaming people that it should be no problem. BOZ (talk) 15:38, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
OK great. I'm not sure the typical structure, what about:
  • Wargames -> Wargaming people -> [Wargame designers / Wargame publishing people / Wargame artists / Wargame players]
The last category is interesting because there are a few notable people known for their wargame playing. How they have time to be notable and play wargames I don't know. -- GreenC 16:30, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think "wargamers" exists already for wargame players. I got the previoulsy deleted "wargame designers" category restored. :) BOZ (talk) 16:32, 7 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Rocky Mountain Trophy Hunter: Interactive Big Game Hunting

Howdy,

Let's discuss the Rocky Mountain Trophy Hunter article and the adaptation section.

My rationale for mentioning the GBC port in the lead part of the article comes from many other articles doing this. See Need for Speed: ProStreet, 50 Cent: Bulletproof, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2. Thus, I believe the adaptation belongs in the lead.

As for the expansions, I agree they belong in their own section since that's how other, larger articles do it. Battlefield 2 comes to mind.

I am currently attempting to get an article on Xantera off the ground, and find citable reviews for their games. If I can get enough sources for RMTH, I will create a Game Boy Color version subheading, but as it stands, I see no justification to combine its mention with additional content for the PC version.

A tag has been placed on Centaur (Dungeons & Dragons) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Centaur (Dungeons & Dragons) (2nd nomination). When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. – sgeureka tc 10:50, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

re Andrew Finch edit

The bit about Theatrix is from the ENWorld piece that I added as a cite a little further on. Perhaps I should have cited it twice? G'iah

G'iah appeared in the MCU first, before she appeared in Marvel Comics. Captain Marvel premiered February 2019, while Meet the Skrulls premiered March 2019. 86.43.114.255 (talk) 11:44, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If that's a cover date, then the actual comic was published first. BOZ (talk) 12:09, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is not. The cover date was May 2019. The actual release date of Meet the Skrulls #1 was March 6, 2019. Captain Marvel premiered February 27, 2019. G'iah appeared in the MCU first, and most of the references about her in the article are about the MCU depiction. The page should be listed at G'iah and be structured like Phil Coulson, another MCU character later included/reinvented in Marvel Comics. 86.43.114.255 (talk) 16:26, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The one who appeared in the film was an unnamed child who was retroactively named G'iah (after the comics character) for Secret Invasion, released in 2023. The comics character realistically came first, and this article is about that version, whereas G'iah is for the MCU version as that is what most general readers would be looking for as the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Trailblazer101 (talk) 16:47, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What makes the comic-book version any more notable then? Because next to all referencing on this page is about the MCU version (who still existed for longer). 86.43.114.255 (talk) 16:52, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When adding links to material on external sites, please ensure that the external site is not violating the creator's copyright. Linking to websites that display copyrighted works is acceptable as long as the website's operator has created or licensed the work. Knowingly directing others to a site that violates copyright may be considered contributory infringement. This is particularly relevant when linking to sites such as YouTube or Sci-Hub, where due care should be taken to avoid linking to material that violates its creator's copyright. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. I see you did the same at e.g. Xenophobe (play-by-mail game). Linking to copyright violations is not allowed in general: creating the copyright violation in the first place by uploading the image to image hosting sites, and then linking to it yourself, is worse. Dark Champions vs Dark Champions: Heroes of Vengeance

I got interested in the Dark Champions: Heroes of Vengeance wiki for some reason. When I started looking at how to improve it, I ran across the separate wiki for Dark Champions (which apparently had two editions, in 1993 and 2004.) In reading the article, I assumed the 1993 edition of Dark Champions was the first in the series, and Heroes of Vengeance (also 1993) was a supplement. But the more I started to dig into it, the more puzzled I became. I can't find any articles for Dark Champions published in 1993, only for the 2004 edition. The only Dark Champions publication I can find that was released in 1993 is Dark Champions: Heroes of Vengeance. So here's what I think is the actual timeline:

  • 1993: Dark Champions: Heroes of Vengeance is released (Hero System 4). Still the costumed superhero RPG like Champions, but the PCs are vigilantes of vengeance (like Batman).
  • 2004: Dark Champions is released (Hero System 5). It has nothing to do with the 1993 publication. Instead, it is a modern-world action-adventure RPG more aligned with Indiana Jones and Lara Croft (although there is a supplement that returns to the costumed vigilantes genre.)

I think some of the confusion lies in the fact that several reviewers in 1993 shortened Dark Champions: Heroes of Vengeance to Dark Champions (such as Mark Arsenault in Shadis #9:p.36, or Jean Belcesak in Casus Belli #79:p.17 -- although the illustration beside the Casus Belli article clearly shows the cover for Dark Champions: Heroes of Vengeance.)

So if my timeline is correct, both articles need some clean up to differentiate them from each other. Does this make sense to you? Do you have any further info to add to this before I get started? Guinness323 (talk) 05:14, 5 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Guinness323, huh, I suppose I didn't realize that before. Yes, I'd say you have it correct based on my own searches. I think HoV was just a Champions supplement in 1993, and the Dark Champions book in 2004 was more of its own thing. I feel like the two articles should be more separate and cover each of those aspects individually, but reference each other ("this came later" and "that came first") if you follow what I mean? I'm OK with you just doing your thing on them, but I'd say we would be best to have one article cover mostly the 1993 book and the other article mostly cover the 2004 book. Advice on What Page to "Some basic properties of nds rolls" (if anywhere)

Hi there, BOZ!

I thought quite a while before adding the "basic properties" subsection to Dice because of exactly the concern you raised (too detailed; better put elsewhere). I did finally put it in DIce as it seemed the best option. Before I did, I searched for other articles in which to put the section's info, but could find none that quite fit; the closest I found Dice Notation, but that article really was about notation, not properties. In your comments re reverting the entry, you indicate that there is an article where this information would better fit....could you tell me its name? I'd like to check it out!

More generally, given your long experience with this area and Wikipedia editing and administration, I'd also much appreciate you advice more generally as to where this information would best be placed on Wikipedia, if at all. The info does seem useful to d20 players (it has been to folks I play with) and I think some folks more generally (those interested in probability theory, for instance). Still, the topic does not seem important enough to warrant its own page...but maybe I'm wrong about that. Or perhaps the info is too esoteric to include in Wikipedia at all? Of maybe there should be a more general discussion of this issue in some appropriate forum (e.g., a page's Talk page)? Any guidance would be much appreciated. Eclectucator (talk) 20:47, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at the top of the section on Dice that you had edited, you will see a link to the page Dice notation and I think that would be a more appropriate place to address the topic in a more detailed way. To be honest, I don't know if any article is an appropriate place for the level of detail you were adding, but if you add anything at all I think it should be there. If you're still not sure, you might want to try starting a new section on Talk:Dice and see what kind of responses you get there. BOZ (talk) 20:57, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

DMG, and Reception and reviews format?

Hey there, BOZ! I've got a question for you! Well ... two, actually.

So the first is about the new DMG. I can't help but notice that there's no information on it, yet. Which is ... surprising, to say the least. With the millions of Users on Wikipedia, I would've thought there'd be a whole bunch, honestly. But, the only thing is a small infobox. Is there a policy I don't know about regarding not publishing info 'til it's available in print to the general public, and the preview and digital copies already available on DnDBeyond don't count?

The second is if maybe you could help me understand how reception and reviews are listed. On 26 September 2024, Oknazevad (who, granted, edits a lot so in theory knows, unless they're just being a jerk) removed all of the "Further reading" and a list of places reviews of the various DMGs could be found. All of them. (link to compare deletions in History) Like, didn't move them to a single section together, or reformat them properly(?), or note that they're not correctly formatted, or whatever. Just deleted all the content entirely. ... this seems to go against Good Faith, and doesn't seem to follow general Wikipedia policy ... and I feel like there's something I'm missing. Can you help me understand what was wrong with the citations and Further reading? —IcarusATB (talk) 13:27, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! :) I know that @Sariel Xilo does a lot more work on newer releases than I do, so might know a bit more about what do to on the new DMG than I would. I personally think we can say a little about an upcoming release, but not much is needed.
Some users to prefer that we not list other reviews in the article space itself if the review is not currently being cited, but in the case of the DMG article I moved all those reviews to the talk page so they're not gone. :) BOZ (talk) 16:42, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much for the reply, BOZ!!! Especially for tagging Sariel Xilo who is able to help even more!! I can't help but feel the wholesale deletion of references like that goes against WP policy, though I have a feeling no one is gonna do anything about that, and it's just one of those things where it is simply tolerated and something like what you did (moving to a Talk page) has to become the solution to avoid people like that from getting into edit warring over things that shouldn't have been done in the first place. ... much the sadder, of course, that there's people out there like this who simply have their own preferences, and without justification or cause eliminate the valid, informative contributions of others instead of working to make things better.
Especially when their edit summaries are something like "No!" and "Wikipedia is not a magazine index", it's difficult to assume Good Faith.—IcarusATB (talk) 18:56, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@IcarusATB: check out the revisions I did to Player's Handbook if you want a model on expanding the DMG article; I tend to put the bulleted reviews into hidden notes because they're basically ref ideas that need to be expanded into prose to be useful for readers. I've been super busy lately if you want to take the lead on updating it. Sariel Xilo (talk) 17:51, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey! Thanks, Sariel Xilo!
I think what I will do is simply wait 'til the 12th and see what anyone else contributes. I looked at the Player's Handbook article, and it's soooooo thoroughly done, I don't know if I could write a page like that, honestly. I mean, if I took an entire day to work on something like that, maybe, but I don't know that I feel confident in deciding what reviews were good sources to quote and such.
But, if by then no one has added anything substantive, I likely will. Since I admin the Great Library of Greyhawk wiki on GreyhawkOnline, we're having to look at adding citation for the content in the new revision of the DMG and adding an article (or section) about the sourcebook itself. So, the stuff I write for the GLoG may help me in writing a page for Wikipedia! It'd be my first. ... I usually edit, rather than creat new WP articles.
Anywhoozle ... thanks again! —IcarusATB (talk) 18:56, 5 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Since my name was invoked, I just wanted to drop in and say that removing those "Reviews" sections that do nothing but list magazines and issue numbers that contained reviews is actually Wikipedia policy. Wikipedia is not an index, and if a review isn't actually being used as a reference, it does not belong in the article text. It's fine to list them on the talk page or in a hidden comment as a suggestion for future use, but not in the article itself. Also, we don't need to mention every review something got in the reception section, especially if it's a fairly routine capsule review of a few paragraphs in a magazine that does dozens of them a month, as was common historically. oknazevad (talk) 10:28, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Recognition at work on "BG: DAII" article

Hi, I want to tell you that I am glad that you saw my work on BG: DAII which I made it yesterday. I thought to contact you earlier, but I was busy. I was also the one behind BG: DA last year in November. On both cases, my aim was to reorganise and rewrite the articles as possible. I tried to make it as fair and constructive as possible while also avoiding mistakes as much I could. Some of the things include reducing the quotes, especially in Reception section while maintaining the same meaning that various reviewers wrote, and also to keep text flowing and simple in all sections as possible and not too much cluttering. I am not the only one who does this - there are some others who are doing it in the same way. This is seen in some, if not all, franchises, and some individual games, especially in some modern indie games. I know one user who is doing it in the same way. For others I don't know who they are, but I am sure there are others like that. Sometimes I do well on some examples, in some not, but I do my best. Probably you can understand this what I am saying. Also, thank you for small fix that you gave, I did not notice it earlier. 141.136.161.212 (talk) 17:13, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Keep up the good work! BOZ (talk) 18:21, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well thank you, but there is another reason why I am contacting you and there is one question: Can you keep an eye on two BG: DA titles (and possibly the whole BG franchise)? There is one kind of problem which I wanted to tell. For example, if there is some user with 70000, 80000, 100000 or 200000 edits and more and makes a massive disruption and deletion on all or one of the sections, like Reception. When someone does it, then reverts it and in summary says "rv disruptive edits by IP" (or anyone else, it depends who is doing on the article). What I made on the articles of those games above is not disruption and someone who says otherwise is potentially lying and manipulating it, and masquarades it as a "good" work while also defaming the other user who was doing it right. If such happens, then this can be a violation of some rules, and even against good faith policy I think. I met a couple of users before and was not a good experience; I strongly believe that they are cheating. Some users are not good in nature and they can make a harm to someone while disguising it as a "benevolent" act, something that should not be tolerated on Wiki and other corners of the web. It is also possible that some ignore the rules and manipulate them or perhaps follow the rules but use this as an excuse rather than admitting that they have done something wrong; in both cases, they can use it to their advantage, and possibly to the detriment of others. I know that you are not administrator, but can you report to someone if this happens? Perhaps it is too much what I asked, but I also wanted to warn on that kind of problem. If you have some questions, you can reply if you want. 141.136.161.212 (talk), 21:24, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I keep an eye on all D&D articles so if I see any serious disruption I will fix it. BOZ (talk) 20:41, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I understand for DnD articles, but I was specific to BG games. I will also keep an eye on them as well and report if this happens. This is not just for DnD articles but also can happen to any page regarding video games when outside of DnD theme. 141.136.161.212 (talk), 21:58, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, all BG articles fall under the D&D articles that I watch. :) BOZ (talk) 20:59, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

New category?

The current categories for historical era of board wargames are:

  • Board wargames set in Ancient history (I assume this means prehistory to ~500 CE)
  • Board wargames set in the Middle Ages (~500 to 1400-ish?)
  • Board wargames set in Modern history (1850-ish?? to today)

Although I'm unsure of the exact dates for these categories, there seems to be a gap between Middle Ages and Modern history, approx 1400-1850. If I were to set up a new category, what should the title be? Guinness323 (talk) 20:17, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Fair question; I remember setting those up, but I don't remember what I used to determine those date ranges. It looks like the Early modern period covers that time period? BOZ (talk) 20:22, 23 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Merry Christmas

To one of the very small number of people here I've met in person. Once. Like 20 years ago. Best wishes! Hobit (talk) 11:19, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your note! My first Christmas story is about Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ, BWV 91, 300 years today, and its song, 500 years old. Enjoy the season! -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:26, 25 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
