Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Hi Majormax, I'm new to this so forgive any mistakes. The image of the Calcutta and Ocean you've used on the Ocean (convict transport ship) page (and its also on the HMS Calcutta (1795)) page is not in the public domain. 17 Construction

G'day, Majormax, I've probably stretched my sources to the limit on this one now. I asked Anotherclown to help out too, and he's added a bit as well. Unfortunately, there are still a few "citation needed" tags, though, including a few in the Namibia section. Do you have anything that could be added for these? Also, I wonder if you have any images that could be added? It would be great to get a couple in to break up the text a little. Another issue that I see, is that in the infobox it says that the squadron was part of the 1st Construction Regiment from 1977. I haven't been able to find a citation for this yet. Thanks for your help! Will do, I will keep looking for material and will sort out Namibia. Pretty well exhausted Google. Good job finding Vol 4 of the corps history. I was in the unit when it was part of 1 Const Regt so I know for a fact that was the Orbat at the time. The unit is going to get an 'Honour Distinction' next year so it will get a bit of press. G'day again, you are doing a great job adding more references to this article, but I'm a little concerned about this change [1]. Some of the citations that are used in the list couldn't cover what they've been put against. For instance the Grantham 1978 source is listed for things are now listed as happening the 1980s. I think that this is ultimately my fault because of the way I included the refs in the previous version. I hadn't realised that I'd bundled them together like that, but your change has highlighted it to me. Anyway, are you able to rectify this? A couple of further points. I'm not sure that presenting the information in list form like that is the best way, particularly as the rest of the article is written in full sentences. Additionally, I would also suggest that the co-ordinates in text aren't really doing much. That is just my opinion and you are welcome to disregard if you see fit, as it is not based on any policy. G'day, I think it looks quite good. Thanks for tweaking it. Images would be a great addition, but the issue will be the difficulty of obtaining some that can be freely licenced. Wikipedia has quite complex policies on this, which essentially boil down to the requirement for images to be "public domain" in the US. This can mean that even if an image is copyright expired in Australia, they can apparently still be copyrighted in the US, so they can't be used unless an air tight "fair use" rationale can be written. In regards to fair use rationales, there is a small but vociferous section of Wikipedia that essentially argues that almost all fair use rationales are null and void. As such, for some articles, it won't be possible to get many, or even any, images. It can be most disheartening. Thanks very much, am working on the photos. The army lost almost all of my photos, we were told to send our photos back to Regimental HQ, and like a good soldier I did. Never saw them ever again :-( But others were less trusting so I am slowly weaning the photos out of some of the other guys (mostly via facebook).AWHS (talk)

Hello Peacemaker, Very appreciative of your efforts. I have done a few articles now, but this is the first that has been through the GA/A-Class process. There is no doubt that this is now a far better article thanks to the efforts of many. My editing skills are not the best, so I am grateful for your comments. It has become quite a large article and there is plenty of opportunity for improvement. When I started this article I had no idea that there was such a thing as a 'Good Article' so I am learning on the job. I have read this so many times that I don't see the errors. Hi, tks for your work on this article, hope you don't mind me tweaking things afterwards... Generally History sections go under L2 headings and then L3 subheaders are used to divide things beneath that; also the consensus among editors is that "World War II" or "Second World War" are equally fine for Commonwealth military articles (as long as one is used consistently within the one article) but "World War 2" is not generally used. March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. Fair Use in Australia campaign update

I'm writing you this followup message, as you took the time to vote in support of a Wikipedia banner campaign for the introduction of Fair Use in Australia.

After much planning and coordination with the WMF, Australian Digital Alliance, and Electronic Frontiers Australia, as of Monday the banner-campaign is active on English Wikipedia to a portion of logged-out readers in Australia (technical details). The banners direct people to this page on Meta: FairCopyrightOz. That page, alongside lots of information, further directs people towards the campaign website faircopyright.org.au where Australians are invited to write to their local MP to express support of Fair Use. If you are interested in supporting this campaign, please, send a letter yourself using the template letter provided at that link.

Furthermore, and with the support of the ADA & EFA, we have received fantastic media coverage - with article "Fair Use: Wikipedia targets Australians in bid to change the law" appearing on page 2 of the Sydney Morning Herald and page 10 of the Melbourne Age on Monday's edition. It was for a time the 3rd most read article the Fairfax website, and Fair Use was "trending" on Twitter in Australia. We are running the account @FairCopyrightOz on twitter, and we are tracking other press-mentions on the talkpage on Meta.

Today, day 2, we published a detailed post about the campaign on the Wikimedia Blog, ran an "Ask Me Anything" Q&A session on the Australia page in Reddit, and [by happy coincidence of timing] the article History of fair use proposals in Australia appeared on the en.wp mainpage as a Did You Know. [The creation of that "history of..." article was a specific request arising from in the community consultation in which you voted].

And, most importantly, in a little more than a day nearly 800 letters to MPs have been sent encouraging them to support the Productivity Commission's recommendation to adopt Fair Use in Australia. I urge you - please add your own message.

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. April 2018 Milhist Backlog Drive

This is not the sole focus of the edit-a-thon, though, and there are aspects that hopefully will appeal to pretty much everyone.
