Alabama Public Radio and user namespace

I don't know of a settled policy in this area, but WP:SELF covers very similar ground: article pages shouldn't contain links that are specific to the fact that the article is part of Wikipedia. That you are a Wikipedia user may be significant while that article is in Wikipedia, but is irrelevant if the article is copied to another site, printed out, or what-have-you. Of course, if you're sufficiently notable, there should be a page at Jeremy Butler about you. --bjh21 16:42, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rude forcing

Re your comment at Hinckley railway station (edit history): "Forcing thumbnail sizes is generally rude". I had no idea! Background to this notion? And what are the permissible exceptions to this generalization? Most thumbnails in Wp appear to me to be posted with an indicated size – whether "forced" or not I cannot tell. File names

I've been unhappy with the changes you have been making to image names, as your changes appear to remove the explicit credit to Geograph or wherever the image was uploaded from. I am therefore very pleased to see that you've started editing filenames to the style "Description-description-description (Geograph 1234567)" which achieves the best of both worlds. Thank you. @DavidAHull: That was part of why I changed my practice, though the main reason was simply that if I always include the Geograph image ID then I don't have to think about whether it might be necessary for disambiguation. @Bjh21: Taking that a step further, you could simply add something meaningful to the naming convention Geograph ask us to use, which would be easier for you and courteous to them, eg "Geograph-1234567 by Fred Bloggs" becomes "Geograph-1234567 by Fred Bloggs. @Bjh21: Basically, it is implicit, as that's what it defaults to, also if you start the download process it asks if you will please use the routine which stamps the image with copyright info. Wikipedia rejects this. I see what you mean about noise at the beginning of filenames, so it would be equally easy to reverse it, so "Geograph-1234567 by Fred Bloggs" becomes "Southerly view from Waterloo Platform 7, source Geograph-1234567 by Fred Bloggs." @DavidAHull: I think you're reading an awful lot into a Content-Disposition header. I see the default filename as a way to ensure that the (licence-required) attribution stays attached to the file, in the same way that the stamping process embeds it in the image data. Neither of these is necessary on Commons because Commons file description pages hold the same information. This is borne out by the fact that in the Wikipedia section of Geograph's reuse.php, the only image link is to the full-res unstamped version, and there's a suggestion to use geograph2commons whose file-naming convention I've adopted.

Anyway, I've run out of files to rename now, so this is a bit academic. I do have a couple of bot ideas that might care about naming of files from Geograph: I'll let you know if/when they come up for approval. --bjh21 (talk) 10:38, 1 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
