ローウェル・シャーマン（Lowell Sherman, 1885年10月11日 - 1934年12月28日）は、アメリカ合衆国出身の俳優、映画監督。当時としては珍しく、1930年代初頭に俳優と監督を兼任して数本の映画に出演した。その後、監督業に専念するようになった。メイ・ウエスト主演の『わたしは別よ』や、キャサリン・ヘプバーンが初のアカデミー賞を受賞した『勝利の朝』などの監督として大成功を収め、キャリアの絶頂にあったときに、短い闘病生活の末に亡くなった。
私生活
3度結婚したが、子供はいなかった。最初の結婚は、劇作家ジョン・ハンター・ブースの妹で女優のエヴリン・ブースと1914年3月11日にした[1]。ブースは、シャーマンが扶養を怠り、残酷であるとして離婚を申し立てた。1922年3月19日に離婚が成立した[2]。
1926年、女優のポーリーヌ・ガロンと結婚[3]。シャーマンは1929年1月25日に離婚を申請し、ガロンは1928年8月に両親の強い要請で自分を捨てたと主張した[4][5]。離婚は1929年3月に成立した[5]。
3度目で最後の結婚は、ドロレス・コステロの妹で女優のヘレン・コステロとのものだった。1930年3月15日、ビバリーヒルズで結婚[6]。そのため、シャーマンは長年の友人であるジョン・バリモアの義理の兄弟となり、ふたりはバリモアの初期のトーキー映画『クラック将軍』に出演した。しかし、シャーマンがバリモアのタワー・ロードの自宅の庭で、シェイクスピアの描写についてバリモアに言った一言がきっかけで、2人は不仲になった。シャーマンとヘレネは1931年11月に別居し、1932年5月に離婚した[7][8]。
死去
1934年12月28日、二重肺炎のためロサンゼルスの病院で亡くなった[9]。グレンデールのフォレスト・ローン・メモリアル・パークに埋葬されている[10]。
シャーマンが亡くなったとき、虚栄の市を監督していた。虚栄の市は、全編が3ストリップ・テクニカラーで撮影された最初の作品である。病気になった後もシャーマンはこのプロジェクトに取り組み続け、製作開始まで25日を要した[11]。彼の死後、ルーベン・マムーリアンが完成させるために招かれた。マムーリアンはシャーマンが撮影した映像を一切使わず、代わりに全編を撮り直すことを選んだ[3][12]。
ルエラ・パーソンズはハリウッド・ホテルのラジオ放送でシャーマンの死をスクープとして伝えた。リスナーからはすぐに、彼女の無愛想なニュース対応に抗議の電話が入った。彼女は、番組のスポンサーであるキャンベル・スープ・カンパニーの代理人であるJ・ウォリス・アームストロング・エージェンシーから一時的に謹慎処分を受けた[13]。
