Speedy deletion of New Jersey Ballet

If you want the references to show up at the bottom of the page, you have to use not only the reference tags, but also use either the <references/> or the {{Reflist}} tags.

high-speed rail dispute

Hi, I was trying to get other users to buy in to abiding by an WP:RFC before posting it, do you think that's a waste of time and I should just go ahead? Imho we have two competing sources for the distance between those two stations, Railway Gazette on one hand and Google Maps on the other. AadaamS (talk) 19:21, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

AadaamS, If the RFC process does not require us to seek an agreement to abide by the outcome prior to the start of the process, then we should not waste time trying to convince the parties in dispute first. I think the best thing for us is to simply follow the process, whatever that is. As I am reading it now, it appears that we should try to work out on the talk page first, which we did but didn't go anywhere. Next is to try WP:3O. However, this is not applicable to disputes with more than two editors. It appears that this issue already involves more than two editors. The next step is to start RFC. It will be great if you can start the process as you seem to be better at articulating the issue on dispute in a neutral way. Let me know I can help further on this. Yes there is no requirement to have everybody agree before posting it. I went ahead and posted the WP:RFC so hopefully we can be done with this edit war soon. I think after the RFC that everyone will be required to abide by the RFC whether they want to or not or be blocked. Thanks for your input and especially that you went and independently verified the the distance using google maps. The outcome will be interesting. Thanks for you input, Bhtpbank. According to that web page, it says, "Faster than regional trains, IC and EC trains connect major cities, reaching speeds of 200 km/h." Based on this web page alone, all IC services are at higher-speed rail range. Maybe you can point out to the specific page that talks about some of their IC services that are running at conventional speeds. I do not live in Germany so I may be missing some concepts here. If you referred to the lower speeds regional trains which are also listed on their web page (http://www.bahn.com/i/view/USA/en/trains/overview/regional_and_urban_trains.shtml): Regional-Express, Regionalbahn and S-Bahn. Those are regional rail which are not strictly inter-city rail we are talking about. We can discuss more in the higher-speed rail talk page so we can share our thoughts with other editors. Thank you for some useful high quality images- and for some useful US input. Your images betray that you have visited Lowell and Boott Mill- the articles really could do with a little tlc (tender loving care) I have been working with GLAM on Queen Street Mill and Helmshore, and a lot of other mills eg Quarry Bank Mill but have no access to any US material to help out with Boott Mills. Well, ClemRutter, I couldn't hide the fact that I recently visited Lowell. I visited Boott Mills and Wannalancit Mills, both of which need some love. I don't know if I can contribute much in term of writing because cotton is not really one of my areas. At the very least, I can contribute photos and videos?? Also, I happen to like to go to some unusual or local museums. If that is covered by GLAM, I can continue to contribute more photos in the future. As you can see, when I have the trust of the museum I blitz the place see Queen Street Mill or Michelin Adventure. My shots usually contain a four digit number. Go for it.
Queen Street Mill is also a mill that has become a textile museum- so could become a good model for Bootts Mills. I see that we have to give a detailed description of the location written to inform a visitor from another continent. This will often involve a bit of cut and paste from other WP articles- eventually someone will accuse us of repetition but it is easy to edit down the text inf required. The history section will concentrate on the economic history/ refering to external events and tech. improvements. We now describe the architecture of the mill: often this can be found in government appraisal documents, and in some cases this is the main feature of the article. I enjoy the bit about the steam-engine (or water wheel technology)- then we can do the looms and other machines and the type of cloth or stuff they wove. Here we can talk about Draper looms, the Northrop turret and Jacquard heads...

And after all this we can describe the building current usages as a museum- and the specific items in the collection. WP brief is to inform the educated individual- but we cannot assume that they are Anglophones or have any background knowledge. Unfortunately I am going to have intermittent broadband access over then next few weeks. @Jytdog: No, I have no relationship or COI to the eye-tracking devices. I just happen to travel to some unusual places and took photos of many devices or things that people would not normally take. My goal is to enhance Wikipedia by adding meaningful visual coverage to articles which would help readers (especially for those visual learners) to understand the subjects better. Eye-tracking device is just happen to be one of them. Please explain why you think that I have COI on this subject. Please also see my past contributions to know that I edited articles in many areas. Recently, I concentrated on equipment and devices. I have more to add for the coming days so please don't treat those as COI. I have been an editor for quite sometime now to know that I need to refrain from editing any articles that might have COI. Please let me know if you still have any concerns.
By the way, anytime I add images, I always try to find references out there, with as much as reliable sources as possible, to be used as inline citations for my images. The link that you removed, although it was a primary source, it is reliable to indicate that the image is actually that device and the components are correct as said in the caption. I don't want other readers to just trust me that I upload the right images. This is my best effort to follow WP:V even for images. Without the citations, how can other editors/readers verify that my images and associated captions are correct? They are not spam links. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks. Thanks for answering. I work a lot on COI/paid editing issues. I don't know if you can see WP through my eyes, but I see a lot of edits that are really focused on a given product or company, that seek to emphasize the name or brand and include promotional, poorly sourced content about it in every related article possible. I looked at your editing history and it looks a lot like a typical paid editor's. Like the edits you did on the eye tracker, or like the EnergyPod, where you name the product, featuring it in the file name, and the picture, and add (what is in my view) some poorly sourced content about it, to several articles, including a redirect for the product name, like this. It seems that your primary interest is documenting physical culture, and the specifics matter...and you do a lot of generic stuff (like pictures of the boiler), and you say you are not doing paid editing - I have already pushed the boundaries of AGF by asking you the questions above, and i appreciate you taking the time to answer. So I removed the COI category from your page, that came with the warning above. I do ask you to consider avoiding emphasizing company names., brands etc., and especially, linking to company websites as citations for the picture or content, and creating redirects to product or company names. @Jytdog:. I can understand your point of view when looking from your angle because you have to work so hard in fighting off those paid editors. I hope you can also look through my point of view in trying to work with images of physical objects. That is sometime very hard to find the secondary sources that visually describe details about them. I can find many secondary sources on the type and principal of operation of products, which I often use for the text contents. However, most of them don't "visually" describe things. My goal is to maintain verifiability. As you may see in my years of edits, I rarely put any new contents (text or images) without having any inline citations. My believe is that, for all images, independent reliable secondary sources are better than primary sources, and primary sources are much better than no source at all which would suggest those images to be WP:NOR.
Regarding product name. The only reason that I put product name and model number on the image upload is for the sole purpose of identification and verifiability of those images. That being said, I agree with you that it may be better not to put brand name and model number directly to image file name on Commons (even though many legitimate editors do), but rather use the generic description. However, when name and model number becomes crucial in identification of the product in the image for verification purposes, I would want to still put that somewhere, maybe in the least prominence place like in "other information" section. I think you maybe right, if my goal is for image identification/verification only, I should not mention the brand/model number in the image caption when adding them to Wikipedia articles because it adds little values for readers to know brand or model number. So I will start that practice. Also, I agree with you that I should not create product name as a redirect page on Wikipedia. Most of the time I don't, but for that particular product, it already passed the threshold of WP:N. I didn't have enough energy to write a new article about it so I just did a redirect page. Going forward, however, I will not do that for the benefits of all of us. A particular product should have its own page and it should stand for the Notability scrutiny by itself. Non-notable product names (or notable products that I have no energy to write an article about) should not get a redirect page at all. So I will do that going forward.
Regarding references, as I mentioned before when working on text, it is much easier to find independent secondary reliable sources. But for image citations, it is harder to find the right sources for them. Still we should not deprive readers from verifiability by not including citation just because the image citation is from a primary source. Not having citation at all for an image inclusion is worst than using primary sources. I understand your position on secondary sources, especially for medical contents as it becomes appearance in your essay. However, if the caption of an image focuses on the physical description on the object (even though it is a medical device), the WP:MEDRS should not be applied because it does not have a medical claim but it is more to do with the design and engineering in nature which would follow the general WP:RS. I'm still trouble with medical-related articles that hold such high standard on sources for the contents, but almost no citation on many of the images included in the articles with medical claims. For instances, CT images of diagnoses, etc. I think image citation is a big verifiability loophole of Wikipedia. I can't fix the world, but I do my part. I rather have image verifiability though primary sources (for non medical claim) than not having it at all.
That being said, I will add back a reference to the patent document for the image caption that explains the location of the components of an eye-tracker. I tried but could not locate a better secondary source for that. Who to say that the gold-color metal located next to the display lens is an LED for illumination to create glints, except by that patent document? That patent document is hardly a promotional material. It's a legal document with no brand name on it and the assignee on the application is a defunct company so there is no way to promote that particular brand / company through the use of that patent document.

Don't know what to say. You are free to do as you like here. I am willing to believe you, that you are not editing for pay. I work mostly on health related stuff, and Project Medicine has a pretty high bar for sourcing WP:MEDRS and a strong style guide WP:MEDMOS, the reason being that those articles are under intense pressure (lots of money and emotion at stake) for people to edit them badly for all kinds of reasons. I will try to work with you to keep content you add to them, but if we can't find good sourcing, it cannot stay. With regard to sourcing for captions describing pictures... that is a very interesting question to me, and you probably have far more experience dealing with the WP:OR of that than I would. IT seems to me that unless you are dealing with a brochure from whoever made the thing, which says that "gold light causes glint", you are doing WP:SYN by connecting a feature in an image to a description of its function. Thanks for a great conversation. For that particular case on the eye-tracker, the patent has a great details of drawing, locations, description and operation of each component. There is no need for SYN. A product brochure would be a good source but I try to avoid that as you already noted that it gives an appearance of promotional. I am not aware of any PAG discussion regarding image citation concerns. I think it will start a discussion in MEDRS about that first since it has higher bar for the references. Leaving a loophole to ignore image citations could be an issue for such high-bar contents. It may be more beneficial to other editors to discuss there instead of just on my own page.
