New Page Patrol December Newsletter

Hello Tulsi,

Year in review

It has been a productive year for New Page Patrol as we've roughly cut the size of the New Page Patrol queue in half this year. We have been fortunate to have a lot of great work done by Rosguill who was the reviewer of the most pages and redirects this past year. Thanks and credit go to JTtheOG and Onel5969 who join Rosguill in repeating in the top 10 from last year. Thanks to John B123, Hughesdarren, and Mccapra who all got the NPR permission this year and joined the top 10. Also new to the top ten is DannyS712 bot III, programmed by DannyS712 which has helped to dramatically reduce the number of redirects that have needed human patrolling by patrolling certain types of redirects (e.g. for differences in accents) and by also patrolling editors who are on on the redirect whitelist.

New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

New Page Review queue September 2021

Hello Tulsi,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Can you take a look at or report the page 56 to ple (talk · contribs) and the IP 2400:1A00:BD20:4866:15DD:DDC6:AEBF:E3E3 (talk · contribs). The new account is editing pages related to Province 1. Their edits seem to be similar in nature to edits made by Anup Rajbanshi (talk · contribs). Also they are trying to bypass the cool-down period of creating new articles by new users by moving unrelated pages in order to create new pages. Mentioned references are reliable and independent to the subject and have significant coverage but coverage is not much sufficient. @Tulsi:, I've re-checked the mentioned references and found good ref. i.e Kantipur, Online khabar, Himal khabar, Nagarik news, Nepal Live etc, these all are reliable and independent but I found that ekagaj is not quite reliable as I think that this news portal has been running by two or more people and editorial content is not much good. Respected admins, I understand my behaviors were problematic and deceptive. I apologies for those. On 3rd of April 2024, Rosguill blocked my account for the concern undisclosed paid editing with relate to Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive361 § DIVINE and Tulsi: COI/UPE/quid-pro-quo editing, association with threats and harassment, but in fact I have no serious involvement in it except for a bit of minor past interactions. Honestly, I have never written any article for payments. I don't support paid editing. The issue which I am accused of was back in 2020 or 2021 and before. For which, I admitted and disclosed the COI with live articles on their respective talk pages. Discussions took place and my globally & locally associated rights were removed, but the block was not placed at that time. Most of the articles were deleted and buried so I didn't find it useful to disclose anything anywhere. I don't prefer to create or edit on any COI article now and in future. However, if someone forces me to create an article then I definitely do a disclosure on article talk page and which go through a review. See a decent example I did on Talk:Ghero. I respect Rosguill's decision to block my account after 2 years of the incident which is still relevant. However, I understand a block is not a punishment, but a way to prevent further disruption. Since the past incidents, I am evolved by the time and lessons learned as well. Reviewing my last 2 years of contributions here, you could find I have created over 80 articles. There are no issues of any undisclosed (paid editing/COI). Apart from creating articles, I had a time in patrolling, see Twinkle log, Draftify log and had reported several usernames at WP:UAA for violation. I am into this hard time because I was not much into reading policies back then. To a great extent to acknowledgment about the policies, the issue is not persistent. I am a globally established user active since Oct. 2014. I have been active on other several projects contributed tirelessly supporting the vision of free access to the sum of all human knowledge. Till date, I have been entrusted with serving as a sysop on Wikimedia Commons, Meta-Wiki, MediaWiki, Maithili and Nepali Wikipedia. What motivates me for placing an unblock request today is that I came across vandalism/unconstructive edits on the article Balen Shah. The unconstructive edits exist since 27 May 2024 and I couldn't revert it. I pledge to contributing abide by the established policies. I would be glad to answer the questions you may have. Sure, but nobody reviewed the unblock request. If you'd like to review it on the merits yourself, I believe you are free to do so; I certainly wouldn't object to you reinstating the request and then immediately reviewing it yourself. I sincerely apologize for my past actions, which were problematic and deceptive. I fully understand the concerns raised, and I deeply regret my involvement. On April 3, 2024, my account was blocked by Rosguill in relation to undisclosed paid editing associated with the Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Archive361 § DIVINE and Tulsi: COI/UPE/quid-pro-quo editing, association with threats and harassment. However, I want to clarify that my involvement in these matters was minimal, with only minor interactions in the past. I have never written articles for payment, and I do not support paid editing.

The issues in question occurred in 2020 or 2021, prior to the block. At that time, I admitted my conflict of interest (COI) and disclosed it on the relevant article talk pages. Following discussions, my global and local rights were removed, but the block was not enforced until two years later. Many of the articles in question were deleted, so I did not find it necessary to disclose anything further. Moving forward, I have no intention of creating or editing COI-related articles. However, if I am ever in a situation where I am required to contribute to such an article, I will ensure full disclosure on the article talk page and submit it for review, as I did with the article Talk:Ghero.

While I respect Rosguill’s decision to impose a block after the two-year gap, I understand that a block serves to prevent disruption rather than punish. I have learned valuable lessons from this experience, and my contributions over the past two years reflect this growth. In this time, I have created over 80 articles, all without any undisclosed paid editing or COI involvement.  Administrator note - Block was imposed by an administrator acting individually but further to a report and discussion at AN (archived thread). An unblock request was then declined after a consensus emerged, also at AN, against unblocking (archived thread). Any admin can handle this unblock request, subject to the blocking admin not objecting to it being looked at fresh. Wikipedia:Blocking policy#Unblocking and Wikipedia:Banning policy#Difference between bans and blocks § 'Removal of block/ban' seem to envisage unblocking as a function of uninvolved administrators. I wouldn't want to waste time with putting the request to AN, unless that was definitely needed. My reasoning here is definitely much more spirit than letter of the law--the block, while not technically a cban, was in the context of a discussion already clearly heading toward such a consensus, which was then made explicit by the rejection of the first appeal brought to AN. I think that if you think that this stands no chance of being accepted by AN, it should be rejected here rather than wasting the community's time.
