S.E.E. Question

Qaz, I'm so sorry I didn't get back to you on that S.E.E. question. I didn't even notice it until today. My comments on the article say that teachers are switching to Signed English to explain S.E.E. There are two different hybrids. S.E.E has the same order (English) as Signed English, but S.E.E. has signs for verb tenses like the "ing" in "going". Signed English, however, does not use signs for "ing" "ed" and so on. Here's an example. Suppose a teacher is explaining the sentence "You are going." She will sign it in S.E.E. first. If she sees that the students don't understand, she will switch to Signed English to explain what she just said in S.E.E. because the students and the teacher are more familiar Signed English. In Signed English she might sign:

YOU [points finger]
ARE [using the sign "true" while mouthing the word, then spelling A-R-E]
GOING [signs "GO", then spells the letters "ING"]

However, if the kids don't understand either the S.E.E. explanation of "You are going" or Signed English explanation of "You are going", the students will gather after class and work out the problem, maybe successfully, maybe not, in ASL. As sentences become more complex the switching from S.E.E. to Signed English to ASL becames a bloody nightmare. I have a hearing friend who learned to sign from a deaf guy who taught him S.E.E. signs but told him the signs were ASL. It's unnerving for me to try and sign with him. He's *ADAMENT* that he's signing correctly. I finally stopped using signs with him because he never knew the difference between ASL signs and SEE signs. My experience is that native signers will almost never correct a hearing person's signs because they have the same feeling about doing so that hearing people have about correcting a person's spoken language. They think it's rude or inappropriate, or they just don't want to get on the bad side of someone who seems willing to communicate using signs. It's a dilemma.

To get you sig 'pretty', all you have to do is format it with different colours. Im gonna make a fake one for you just to show you an example: Qaz | talk.

You can now go from here changing the colours or any combination; the colours are the numbers. you can find a buch of colour codes here. After you have fixed it, you copy the combination and go to your preferences, place them in the "Nickname" bar. Then click "Raw signatures...". Where The Heart Is

There's just no real rerason to delete it. I guess it's one of those things that is automatically redirected if typed into a search box, but that doesn't apply if someone were to make a link Where The Heart Is (if the redirect is deleted, you'll notice that link turn red). Even if there is no such link now, someone could make one. The general rule of thumb is that redirects are cheap, and just because something doesn't link via that redirect isn't a reason to delete it. It's by no means the most important decision I've made, but it's totally harmless and potentially useful, so there was really no valid reason for deletion. -R. fiend 11:31, 8 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The reason I put up the delete tag is because for some reason you can type in the name of the article in all lowercase and yet you still trigger the redirect which makes no sense and displays the name of the article in a way contrary to naming conventions at the top when you did not make that mistake. TOP SCIENTISTS

Your welcome. The article --Top 1000 Scientists: From the Beginning of Time to 2000 AD-- is going to need a lot of work because of that list. The reason is that the names are in alphabetical order (by last name) in the list as it appears now and they do not match our article naming conventions. This means you have to use an editing trick to fix each and every entry. You can see when you press edit how I had to use a pipe in order to get the link to show the name one way and link to something else. When using a pipe what comes first is where it really links to and after the pipe is what is shown on the page. I would be glad to have some help as it is a long list. Near Vertical Incidence Skywave

Hey, I cleaned-up the Near Vertical Incidence Skywave page to make it appropriate for Wikiepdia. I removed the Wifi stuff, and added a simple explanation of what NVIS really is.

basically, NVIS is a radio propogation mode that is especially useful in communicating over the horizon in circumstances where VHF isn't useful. Sometimes you want to communicate with a station on shortwave thats too far for groundwave and too far for traditional skywave. This is called the skip zone. So, basically, NVIS allows you to communicate into the skip zone. This is useful for emergency or mmilitary applications.

I have no idea where the fellow was going when he wrote it, but you may want to take another look at it and see what I did.

Ejaculation (grammar)

Thanks for the comments on my user talk page. I certainly don't take offense! I'm delighted someone else is interested in working on the article. See User:Andrewa/creed.

However, let me explain what I meant by saying "in English". These are (were) both examples taken from English. It isn't assumed that just because this is English Wikipedia that everything we talk about will also be English, far from it, we have an article on the German language for example, and one of the examples in the verb article is taken from Spanish or Portuguese, unfortunately it doesn't say which!

I think that the verb article would be improved a great deal if more actual examples from other languages were given, this has been the custom in most linguistics books I have seen.

Similarly, we should add examples from several languages to the article on ejaculations, IMO. The French ben (pronounced as a very short postnasalised bah) is the best example I can think of outside of English. I can't see that the English examples shouldn't stay too, but if you found them confusing then ipso facto they were. See if you can do better. Andrewa 03:09, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I agree wholeheartedly about not everything having to be about English even though it is in English. It was the sentence structure more than anything that confused me. It seemed to be a comment out of nowhere just saying that yes, this is English. With more context it would be fine and as you point out, provide an improvement. Does it not take just a bit more than someone saying they own it to remove a copyvio? As far as I understand it, it is enough to stop a speedy. It can still be sent to afd where the standards are a little different. To stop a copyvio speedy though I think all you need is a claim of ownership much like you only need a claim of notablity to stop a nn-bio speedy. I'm trying to change indiscrimant use of the term "deaf-mute" in describing deaf people in general. MANY THANKS! Now, I'm again asking those who commented against using "deaf-mute" to once again help me out. There is a persistent user who has repeatedly reverted "deaf" to "deaf-mute", and has again reverted (and probably will do so again until this issue is mediated [in process] or arbitrated). So far I'm the only one who has reverted it back to "deaf". If others could please put The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter on your watchlist and revert when necessary, I think it would have a much bigger impact. Just be careful not to violate the 3-revert-rule. As I'm writing this, the article needs reversion. There are four instances in the article where "deaf" is being reverted to "deaf-mute". Re: Good Job

Thanks for your praise, but I'm sure any of us who stepped forward would have done the same. I'm sure there are (many?) other articles that use the term "deaf-mute" (or other erroneous terms) indiscriminantly, but I've had trouble finding them. So far I've only found Babel and The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, only because I had seen both films. The article on Stephen King's novel The Stand uses the term, but that was such an unrealistic portrayal of a deaf person that I'm willing to concede the character might literally be mute. It still has no sources besides the book itself, and having got hold of a copy of the book, I find that it actually makes no claims to be derived from an authoritative survey, so I see no notability. Your question from 2 years ago about the holton arms school

You were enquiring about how holton could have been founded out of a pushcart. I attend the school & i know my reply is late but basically Ms. Holton & Ms. Arms were employed at the same school when their future goal to start their own girls school reached their superior's ears. The woman had them fired immediatly & they packed what little school supplies they owned themselves & bought a push cart from a hotdog vendor on the street to carry it in. Because they had no means of income the woman decided they would start their school from what they had in that cart. Later, a parent from the school they used to work at allowed them to use his house as their school building. So while Holton did not techniqually begin in a push cart, the establishment of the school (though the ladies didn't know where they would establish the building) was done while they had nothing but their items & a push cart.

MSU Interview

Dear Qaz,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you.
