Wikipedia Ambassadors update

Hi! You're getting this message because you are or have been a Wikipedia Ambassador. A new term is beginning for the United States and Canada Education Programs, and I wanted to give you an update on some important new information if you're interested in continuing your work this term as a Wikipedia Ambassador.

You may have heard a reference to a transition the education program is going through. This is the last term that the Wikimedia Foundation will directly run the U.S. and Canada programs; beginning in June, a proposed thematic organization is likely to take over organizing the program. You can read more about the proposal here.

Another major change in the program will take effect immediately. Beginning this term, a new MediaWiki education extension will replace all course pages and Ambassador lists. (See Wikipedia:Course pages and Help:Education Program extension for more details.) Included in the extension are online volunteer and campus volunteer user rights, which let you create and edit course pages and sign up as an ambassador for a particular course.

If you would like to continue serving as a Wikipedia Ambassador — even if you do not support a class this term — you must create an ambassador profile. If you're no longer interested in being a Wikipedia Ambassador, you don't need to do anything.

Please do these steps as soon as possible

First, you need the relevant user rights for Online and/or Campus Ambassadors. (If you are an admin, you can grant the rights yourself, for you as well as other ambassadors.) Just post your rights request here, and we'll get you set up as quickly as possible.

Once you've got the ambassador rights, please set up at a Campus and/or Online Ambassador profile. You can do so at:

• Special:CampusAmbassadorProfile
• Special:OnlineAmbassadorProfile

Going forward, the lists of Ambassadors at Special:CampusAmbassadors and Special:OnlineAmbassadors will be the official roster of who is an active Ambassador. If you would like to be an Ambassador but not ready to serve this term, you can un-check the option in your profile to publicly list it (which will remove your profile from the list).

After that, you can sign on to support courses. The list of courses will be at Special:Courses. (By default, this lists "Current" courses, but you can change the Status filter to "Planned" to see courses for this term that haven't reached their listed start date yet.)

As this is the first term we have used the extension, we know there will be some bugs, and we know the feature set is not as rich as it could be. (A big wave of improvements is already in the pipeline. And if you know MediaWiki and could help with code review, we'd love to have your help!) Please reach out to me (Sage Ross) with any complaints, bug reports, and feature suggestions. The basic features of the extension are documented at Wikipedia:Course pages, and you can see a tutorial for setting up and using them here.

Communication and keeping up to date

In the past, the Education Program has had a pretty fragmented set of communication channels. We're trying to fix that. These are the recommended places to discuss and stay up-to-date on the education program:

1. The education noticeboard has become the main on-wiki location for discussion of the Education Program. You can post there about broad education program issues as well as issues with individual courses.
2. The Ambassadors Announce email list is a very low-traffic announcements list of important information all Ambassadors need to be aware of. We encourage all Ambassadors (and other interested Wikipedians) to subscribe to the list; follow the instructions on the link to add your email address.
3. If you use IRC regularly, or need to try to reach someone immediately, the #wikipedia-en-ambassadors ^connect IRC channel is the place to find me and fellow Ambassadors.

Ambassador training and resources

We now have an online training for Ambassadors, which is intended to be both an orientation about the Wikipedia Ambassador role for newcomers and the manual for how to do the role. (There are parallel trainings for students and for educators as well.)

Please go through the training if you feel like you need a refresher on how a typical class is supposed to go and where the Ambassadors fit in, or if you want to review and help improve it. If there's something you'd like to see added, or other suggestions you have for it, feel free to edit the training and/or leave feedback. A primer on setting up and using course pages is included in the educators' training.

The Resources page of the training is the main place for Ambassador-related resources. If there's something you think is important as a resource that's not on there, please add it.

Finally, whether or not you work with any classes this term, I encourage you to post entries to the Trophy Case whenever you see excellent work from students or if you have great examples from past semesters. And, as always, let students (and other editors!) know when they do things well; a little WikiLove goes a long way!

Wikiproject Appalachia

Hi, Matthew.

I'm pleased to see that Wikipedia's Appalachia articles are going to be a focus for some student attention. Several years ago, WikiProject Appalachia was organized as a focus for cooperation (and hand-wringing, at times) in improving Wikipedia coverage of topics related to Appalachia. A couple of the students seem to have found their way to the wikiproject talk page.

I invite you and the students involved in this activity to interact on the wikiproject talk page, review past discussions, look at resources like most-viewed pages in the wikiproject, and otherwise engage with project members. Hi! I understand you are using Wikipedia as a teaching aid. The first thing your students will need to know here is that we do not tolerate copyright violations. As an aid to identifying those, we often use a couple of tools, this and this. The latter gives very clear results when a page is compared with a known or suspected source, the former scans more widely. Had you known of them, either would have told you that the content added to Harvey Milk High School was lifted pretty much word-for-word from the two newspaper articles cited as sources; a quick visual inspection of the student's sandbox would have told you the same. Your re-addition of the copyvio to the article after it had been very correctly removed was not acceptable; please make sure you do not do that again. You were also edit-warring at that page, which again is not acceptable behaviour here. You could now help the project by checking all contributions made by any student of yours, and completely removing any other copyright violations. Thanks Justlettersandnumbers. I am aware of the policies on copyright. I do spend considerable time talking with my students about this. Of course, students sometimes still misunderstand. I apologize for adding some of the material back. The student in question was also being censured for adding queer/lgbtq content and I was trying to help ensure that his first experience editing wasn't one of complete redaction and erasure (when not all of his contribution was problematic). Change in your user rights

Your Wikipedia account was previously granted a user right called "course instructor" by the Wiki Education Foundation. That right enabled you to create a course page through the EducationProgram MediaWiki extension. Starting in fall 2015, the Wiki Education Foundation has discontinued its use of this extension. It's not the job of WP editors to rewrite unusable student contribs

Hi Matt, looking over your talk page I see this has come up before, so I'm going to copy this there as well. My priority is the 'pedia, not test edits by students. I've usually cut students more slack, but if the edits aren't improvements, the student status of the editor is not a reason to keep them in the articles. Recently the Indigenous articles have been hit by quite a few edits that show a lack of understanding of the subject matter. In many cases it is clear that the student editor didn't even read the article they are trying to change. There have been many copyvios. As I said above, it is not our job to rewrite this stuff. Hi@CorbieVreccan: I think you are misunderstanding my comment. I'm not worried about the student's course grade, and certainly not placing more value on that than the content or quality of the new content being added. Rather, I am interested in an encyclopedia that might work with novice editors. That's all I am asking, is that you work more with the student rather than reverting their edits wholesale. In any case, this student has expressed a desire to work with you, so she will be trying to re-write her additions with the suggestions you made about tense. Maybe you can use this as an opportunity to collaborate and even teach a newcomer to the Wikipedia community. I would never ask WP editors to rewrite student content and I am slightly disappointed by your heading line. New editors are also editors, not only students. Thanks! Matt, we help out new editors every day here. But everyone has their limits. We can't individually tutor every single one who messes up an article. Like any new user, they need to read the policies and other links we post for them. In many cases it is clear they are not doing so. Now and then a student editor does a good job and becomes a Wikipedian. But lately we've just seen too many who are clearly only trying to get their grade and don't care one bit about the quality or integrity of the 'pedia. This is a serious problem and if you haven't noticed it in the areas where you work, I suggest you look at some of the other edits that are coming from these courses. If some of the editors you've responded to sound annoyed... Matt, they have every reason to be. Hi@CorbieVreccan:. Thank you for you your response. Again, I am not asking anyone to "individually tutor every single" student. I am a bit confused on why you continue to repeat that idea. All I was asking, originally, was whether it was possible to work with student edits rather than reverting them wholesale. If you have no interest in doing that, I can't convince you to collaborate with novices. I'm sorry you have had negative experiences with Wiki Ed in the past. However, talk pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments, as you did at Talk:Indigenous Peoples of North America, is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Hi@CorbieVreccan:- Thank you for your welcome. I am confused by your advice about editing comments on Talk:Indigenous Peoples of North America, though.. The edit you refer to is simply the removal of a student assignment working with Wiki Ed and was performed from the Wiki Ed dashboard that give instructors permissions to add and remove student assignments. The student in question did not end up working with this article, so it doesn't make sense to leave that assignment. I am posting this on your Talk page as well. This is beginning to feel spiteful. From here, your interactions with other editors are looking to me like a serious case of WP:IDONTHEARYOU. There have been a handful of incidents now where other editors have explained something to you, and you respond in a manner that seems you did not read their explanations. You again ask the same questions that have already been answered for you in multiple places. This has the effect of wasting editors' time and causing annoyance and friction with people who would rather be doing productive work. You still don't seem to realize that the "article" you refer to[4] is a redirect, and that trying to place an article there would be going against WP consensus. This again shows you are not paying attention. Rather than striking the text and disabling the template, you removed someone's edit that already had a reply, rendering the talk page nonsensical, so I informed you of the policy and provided the diffs. Again, this was all explained to you already. You need to get a grasp of basic policy because right now your actions are not helping the 'pedia or the editors here. Hi@CorbieVreccan:-By all means, please don't waste your time on my talk page anymore. I don't find your explanations especially helpful, rather they tend to be condescending and hostile. I was trying to remove the student assignment from the redirect, as explained above, because the student did not do editing work on page. This is performed from the Wiki Ed dashboard, which does not show the previous edits. Please wp:assumegoodfaith. If we are wasting your time, don't engage. As I said on the article on gender roles, the student has given up on trying to work with the particular editor culture of that article. Thank you. Just a friendly heads-up in case you weren't already aware, since it's installed on your common.js: Careless use of ReferenceExpander has caused serious problems. It's currently at MFD, and a large cleanup project is underway to repair the citations damaged by the script. I and several other users have !voted that the script be deleted or disabled, and I wouldn't recommend using it at all unless you thoroughly check every reference it modifies against the previous revision. Hi Matt. Hope all is well. I can see that you are offering Wikipedia editing service for pay on Upwork (there is no outing because you edit under your real name). I'm sure that you are doing it as a research project to gauge how paid editors are treated by volunteers.

Regardless of that, you might want to do it in the true spirit and as per Wikimedia Foundation's guidelines, i.e., keep the disclosure permanently either on your user page or talk page of the draft/article you edited for pay and use the WP:AFC process if it is a new entry; otherwise, use the WP:EDITREQUEST for paid editing requests. Paid editors' work must be reviewed by a volunteer after a disclosure, and they cannot delete the disclosure after completion of the contract. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Hello,

I see you added a bio for Victor Villanueva. He was my professor and chair for my MA in English in 2014 at WSU, and I tried to create a Wikipedia page then for him, but found it to be too difficult to meet all the requirements. It was my first time trying to create a Wikipedia page, and it became too overwhelming on top of my graduate studies.

So, I write to thank you for making it come true. His is a living legend and deserves to be recognized as such.
