Re:Country stubs -> Project assessments

Hi, Using AutoWikiBrowser and Kingboyk's Plugin, i am able to do automated assessments using my bot, yes.

The "class=stub" can be done from either building a list from a category of "X article stubs", or what transcludes certain templates.

Any other class, is really only done in a semi-automated fashion, using the same tools. However, your way of detecting it as a "start" class, is interesting...

If you want me to do some blanket stub tagging (based on a category/template transclusion), if you let me know, and i can certainly work on it for you

Did SatyrBot ever run for you?

Did I ever run SatyrBot on WP:Italy or WP:Wine for you? Looking over my logs, I don't see any runs. I see that you mentioned having the bot run on the Italy page, with resounding silence :) Was there any discussion within WP:Wine?

On that note, you've given me the top category for the projects, I assume. I can run the bot on that cat and one level down, but you may want to consider putting together a real category list. For example, WP:Alabama has the list Wikipedia:WikiProject Alabama/Categories. The reasoning is explained on the User:SatyrBot/WikiProject_Services page.

Località of Italy

I placed a category redirect on Category:Localita of Italy so it directs to Category:Località of Italy. Is that what you were trying to do? There is a bot that moves articles out of the redirected categories when they get misplaced there, so you don't have to continually check. Good Ol’factory ^(talk) 11:40, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Zinfandel POV tag

Hi, would you please review/edit/comment on User:Amatulic/drafts, which is my suggested replacement of the POV-tagged section in the Zinfandel article? I re-wrote it to state subjective views as opinions rather than facts, and converted the list to prose descriptions of only notable regions. Heh heh - no sign of wikification and just small enough to escape an automatic Start on pure size grounds, :-) but it does make you wonder a bit about some people. I've had a bit of fun with my Mark II bot to pre-convert infoboxes, trying to minimise the amount of human intervention. The date part is not quite idiot proof but pretty good now - it can cope with translating things like "third Sunday in July" and I'm now working on getting a reasonable hit rate on the saints - although those idiots can be fiendishly ingenious.....

Good work on the fraz cats by the way, it needed doing. One thing that needs a bit of sitting down to do, is to make sure that all the comuni in particular are tagged with the appropriate comune cat. I've not looked in detail but from memory eg the Chieti cat had 104 members, when comuni.it lists 108 in Chieti, that kind of thing. If we can get them all tidied into the cats, then we can get Satyrbot or similar to assign them to the Project, and then we'll have a fresh lot of articles to sort out. But for now I'm holding off Satyr until we've got the current lot cracked, it would be nice to get the Project's Unassesseds and comuni-without-infoboxes down to zero before starting on a whole load of new ones, good for morale anyhow. At current rate of progress, I'll have my new infobox helper ready some time next week I guess - and in the meantime I've a whole load of cyclist articles to assess and infobox for when brain death sets in.... ;-/ FlagSteward (talk) 00:29, 13 March 2008 (UTC)

What I enjoyed about Mathi most was that there had been quite a few edits—including one marked copy-edit, or clean-up after it had embarked on its double life! Impressed by the sound of your info-box pre-conversion bot, I must say. Well I thought that there ought to be some frazioni cats so that those new articles that spring up can be slotted into place and not get lost. But I am actually not at all keen on using the word on the English wikipedia. The thing is that the Italians mostly use it the loose sense, in which case we can translate as ‘village’, ‘place’, ‘suburb’, ‘quarter’, etc. as appropriate to the place. Judging from their frazioni & località project talk page it is pretty hard to pin down in practice which of the 60,000 odd places concerned is ‘formally’ a frazione and which is not. There is no known official list. (Nor, by the way, does there seem to be an official list of città.) In theory each commune’s statute should its frazioni: but they don’t always, and when they do they are often ambiguous. And the few statuti I’ve looked at have listed them simply as being ‘historically recognised’ without specifying any particular administrative status. I think that most of the sub-commune level local authority stuff in recent years has been on a different basis: all those rioni and quartieri and so-forth. Istat, too, work on a diferent basis. I wanted to thank you, because my ancestors are from this little town and I have been fruitlessly searching for any information on this town for quite a while before thinking of Wikipedia. I have to ask though, because I'm bursting with curiousity, how did you know so much about this little town in Italy? If you remember, do you think you could send me links to the sources where you found this data?

Cardinal box

Hi. To be honest I forget the reason (sic). It may have been a hangover from a box for another topic that I copied but it is such a long time ago I cannot remember. (It may also perhaps refer to any special reason for appointment. For example the archbishop of Dublin (and likely future cardinal, or further) Diarmuid Martin, was appointed to clean up the mess over the incompetent handling of clerical sex abuse cases by his predecessor, Cardinal Connell. That is just a rough guess. (Alternatively someone may changed 'reason' to 'reason for exit' but left 'reason' in in error.) I honestly cannot remember.

I noted too your one line (or babelfish-lenghthened) stubs about Italian fractions and my first reaction was to ask for immediate deletion. Later on, I learned that you aren't Italian speaking, so I can understand why such articles were so deceiving. I appreciate your efforts... anyway, they ARE deceiving, until someone works them out in order to get more satisfying pages. I feel that you'd better surrender and recognize that you, alone, cannot write all these pages in it.wiki (I'd like to write many things in en.wiki too, but I usually abstain since I must acknowdlege that the results would be quite deceiving), and probably the most useful thing you can do is asking people in it:Discussioni progetto:Geografia/Antropica/Comuni tho help you in your project. Music of Italy

Thanks for the comment on that article. I put the following comment after yours on that discussion page:

"You're probably right, but it's a tough one. I was one of the two or three main contributors to this article, which got longer and longer and finally failed the peer review for FA, in my view, because no one could agree on whether to deal with "Italy" as a relatively new nation state (in the Music of (nation) series, or a very old cultural concept that would include all music from the Italian peninsula--ever!--(maybe even Etruscan barbershop quartets). André Simon

Hi FlagSteward. I agree with your decision to move André Simon to André Simon (racing driver) - the wine writer does seem to be more notable. However, it might have been nice if you had updated the existing links to André Simon after moving the page. Perhaps something to consider for next time? Regards. As per the instructions for moving, I fixed the double redirects and the 'big' single redirects like the one on the writer's page, but left the remaining ones to be fixed by bots "over the next few days". Let me know if that doesn't work out, but in principle if there's a bot to do something, I'd rather get on with more important things.... :-)) FlagSteward (talk) 18:18, 25 March 2008 (UTC)

As far as I know, there are no bots that go around and fix up the links following a page move (although I'm happy to be corrected on that point - it would save me a lot of effort too!). I believe there is a bot that fixes double-redirects (like this) but not just straight links to the page. I fixed the André Simon links myself - there were only about 20. Regards. Traminer

Hello, FlagSteward. I noticed that you're the editor behind much of the material in the Gewürztraminer and Savagnin articles, and in particular the history and genetics material. It looks like you added the bulk of this material in August 2007, which of course is a couple of edits ago... :-) For a long time, I've thought that it's not an ideal state of affairs to have Traminer as a redirect to Savagnin, and have been considering a new Traminer article as an overview of the Traminer family of grapes, with a focus on history, genetics and the difference between the varieties/clones/versions/whatever-they-actually-are. I've started this article in my sandbox at User:Tomas e/Traminer. I'd be grateful if you could take a look at it, in particular if you think the main thrust of the article seems appropriate and understandable.

When the Traminer is finished, I plan to take away most of the material on history, genetics and related grape varieties out of the Gewürztraminer and Savagnin articles, in order to focus them on those specific varieties and varietal wines from them.

By the way, I'm somewhat sceptical to two statements that are included in the OCW article on Gewürztraminer (2006 ed, p. 313) and which you have included in Gewürztraminer and Savagnin:

• Traminer being recorded specifically in Tramin around AD 1000. With other German-language sources mentioning that an old synonym for Räuschling being Großer Traminer, I'm curious how these varieties were differentiated and Traminer identified. For many other classical varieties such as Pinot Noir and Riesling, the earliest certain mentions and identifications are usually from the 14th and 15th centuries, so "certain" post-antiquity but pre-1300 varietal identifications must be extremely rare...
• Red Traminer as a mutation of White Traminer. Other sources seem to say that DNA analysis show them to be extremely closely related/more or less identical, which reasonably could mean that the relationship goes either way from a genetic point of view. Perhaps this is based on the colour of "old Traminer in Tramin", in which case it could actually refer to Räuschling rather than White Traminer...

I am therefore not sure how I should treat these statements other than trying to look for additional sources - I assume that you just used OCW. Any input and comments would be appreciated. I don't have a fixed timeline when I plan to let the article go "on air". Writing it seems to generate a lot of smaller new articles, so it's keeping me busy anyway... Thanks so much. This related group of information articles is besmirtched with lots of baggage from mono accounts and editors proclaiming this and that. Please sir or madam to continue to get involved in a general house cleaning thereabouts. Again perhaps the best course is to make the Technocracy movement article an article for possible deletion. New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. WikiProject templates

Hi! I was going through the list of changes to WP:PLANTS assessments and noticed a couple of your edits that added or removed the WikiProject Plants template on the talk page. One of the changes I saw added a template to a page not within our scope diff (WikiProject Horticulture and Gardening would be best for the botanical gardens) and another removed the template from a page definitely within our scope diff. So you know, my reasoning was that Pepperoncini does not appear to refer to a specific cultivar, it seems to be a US-English term for a range of sweet peppers, prepared by pickling. Since it's more about the processing than a specific botanical entity, it seemed one for the Food project rather than Plants, just like tinned tomatoes or whatever. On the botanic gardens front, I must have been misled by the bit on WP:PLANTS where it says "This project's scope also includes botanists and botany-related articles". If a botanic garden isn't a botany-related subject, what is? Sure it could also go under the horticulture project, but it's quite normal for articles to belong to two projects equally, botanic gardens are as much about botany as horticulture. To take an extreme example, are you seriously suggesting that Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew is not a "botany-related article" and should be removed from WP:PLANTS? I know very little about Pepperoncini, but the article does seem to be discussing a single cultivar, a member of a cultivar group, whether or not the cultivar taxonomy is correct in that there's an actual cultivar group, I'm not sure. I'd have to look it up, and really wouldn't know where to start with cultivated plants. If it is just a product of pickling, then yes, it should be removed and the cultivar infobox should also be removed, linking to the "parent" cultivar that is pickled to create it.

On the botanic gardens, yes, we include botany-related topics, but most botanic gardens serve on the purpose of being a showcase. Are non-research zoos included in the animal project? I believe there's been discussion about this among the WikiProject Plants members and it was decided to not include most botanic gardens and arboreta in our scope. The exception you pointed to, Kew Gardens, is because of their long history of being more than a showcase. There's so much taxonomic work done there that WP:PLANTS can't ignore it. So you can see why we consider most botanic gardens to be non-related to the study of plants (botany) and more of a pretty place to go visit or a horticultural endeavor. --Rkitko ^(talk) 14:01, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Zoos are a bit different, as the single word in English covers everything from "zoological gardens", places of serious study, to Barnum-type enterprises which might nicely described by the translation of the German name "animal gardens". The cost of keeping a couple of lions means that even "serious" places rely on people coming through the doors. Plants however are much cheaper to run :-) and a botanic garden can be funded by a university say, so they tend to be a distinct breed apart from "normal" gardens and parks. I'd profoundly disagree with your weasel-worded (and non-WP:CSB?) statement that "most" botanic gardens are purely for show - off the top of my head I can't think of any in the UK that aren't connected with a university or Kew, and that haven't been used for "serious" botany at some stage. And WP:PLANTS merely requires "botany" rather than "taxonomy", remember. I suspect the same applies to most of Europe - they were mostly set up in the early days when there was still a lot of "easy" taxonomy to be done - and even in the New World (I'm thinking Australia in particular) they may have been set up initially as a source of germplasm from Europe, but then made important contributions to understanding the native fauna. In fact, in the UK it goes the other way - there's quite a lot of "botany" happening outside the formal settings of the few botanic gardens, many of the National Collections of garden genera are in private gardens for instance, and there's a couple of examples of some private collections attaining such importance that they end up in some kind of "Big Botany" structure. To take a different example - not every university in the Universities Project can be a Harvard, some are almost exclusively teaching organisations, but just being called a "university" stands for something, it distinguishes them from 10,000's of other educational establishments. Since botanic gardens represent less than 0.1% of all public "gardens", I'd say that tag is a meaningful indication that some kind of botany has gone/goes on there, and that the onus should be to prove that it doesn't, rather than the other way round. BTW - if you're talking about this discussion, I'd say that's far from a consensus. Perhaps continue over there? FlagSteward (talk) 15:32, 11 May 2008 (UTC)

Italy

I'm not sure why you keep bringing frazioni up. Italy would be one of the very very last countries on the list for even coverage. It has an article on every comune and 95% of these are still barely beyond a line. For Italy priority is clearly developing the articles on communes rather than starting hamlets or small villages within them. Howveer most countries in Africa and Asia have nowhere evne near 5% of what Italy has and these countries will be the specific target. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ ^$1,000,000? 12:40, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Tagging WikiProject Companies articles using bot

As you had mentioned on another talk page about using your bot to tag relevant articles I thought I would follow up to see if this was still possible. I had started working on this with another user earlier in the year, but they appear to have taken a Wikibreak!

My thoughts on tagging were as follows:

• Add {{WikiProject Companies}} to the talk page of any mainspace article using Template:Infobox Company or Template:Infobox Defunct Company, if of course it is not already there.

Additional Tasks, not required but would be nice if they are easy to accomplish

• Set the class parameter of the WikiProject Companies banner to "Stub" if a stub template is used on the article
• If the banner for WikiProject B&E ({{Business}}) is already on the talk page, but the class & importance parameters have not been set, then remove it (this was agreed with WP B&E participants at this discussion)

In principle I'd love to help; finding time is a bit more difficult... But I'm particularly keen to see the Companies Project get going, so I'll bump you up the list. ;-/ Even so I'm unlikely to be able to do anything major for a week or two. I assume you mean User:SatyrBot? My bot's a wee bit different, it's not a "continuous" bot like his, it's more geared to one-off runs, as it needs quite a bit of input from me. The advantage I have is that my bot tries to parse the article text, so 90% of the time it can assign Start or Stub based on that rather than just doing stubs based on a stub tag. It also has a look for FA/GA/B in other Projects on the Talk page. So what I'm trying to say is that it's worth waiting for, it saves quite a lot of work in the end.

I'd observe that most company articles don't have the infoboxes, so I'd be tempted to go for a more inclusive approach that targets the company categories. You'll get a lot of companies that only have Category:Manufacturing companies of Italy or Category:Companies in Milan or Category:Electronics companies for instance, but no infobox, but they obviously all belong in the Project. However, as I'm finding with 22,000 Italy articles at the moment, the categories need a fair bit of cleaning up before you can rely on them. Companies shouldn't be too bad compared to a country Project, there's usually nice distinct categories, but you're bound to find categories in the hierarchy that are either misplaced or sound good but in practice just don't "work". Sometimes it's just a question of changing the cats on one or two articles, sometimes you just have to cross the category off the list for automated tagging. I'd have to ask you to do the "cleaning" yourself, I really don't have time at the moment. It's quite good in a way though, you end up doing a lot of very necessary "housekeeping". I guess one approach might be to do the categories for FTSE-, Nikkei- and S&P 500-member companies just to get things started, then we can tackle the building companies of Brazil in Phase II. Another thing, are there any criteria you can think of for automatically assigning importance? I'd love to do it off data in the infoboxes, but I don't think the data is clean enough from what I've seen. Would membership of the above 3 indices automatically imply High importance for instance? Can do that pretty easily. The other thing to think about is whether there's any industry/country taskforces you want to set up, or template fields such as needs-infobox = yes - again they're easier to do now rather than later, even if the template doesn't actually support the fields yet!

Cleaning out the B&E tags is doable, although I'd have to get separate permission for the bot - I might do it semi-manually using WP:AWB (check it out if you're doing a lot of bulk editing like it sounds like you are). I think I'll wait until we've got everything tagged with Companies and then we can see what the scale of the problem is. I was going to say that you should extend it to the articles that have been classed as stub but not for importance (Chimpbot did a lot of those) but I see the actual "permission" was for everything that doesn't have importance and class, so we're good to go on the Chimpbot ones.... Just having had a look at it - ouch!!! There's nearly 20,000 articles with the infoboxes, and about 15,000 unassessed articles in the B&E Project, compared to 3000 in Companies. And maybe I'm biased cos I've been looking at a lot of Italian company articles, but my impression is that most company articles don't have the infobox, we might be looking at 100,000 or so in total? This is starting to look like A Big Job..... Will teach me to open my big mouth. ;-/

It's potentially a bit messier removing the B&E template when there's other templates like Companies around, and in conjunction with the relative numbers I'm now thinking that it will be better to get the articles extracted from B&E first, before getting serious about tagging with Companies. I think my priority is to sort out the permissions for my bot, which can potentially take a few weeks, although I'd hope it would be less than that for a variation on an existing bot. In the meantime (but not this week) I could knock off the S&P and FTSE as being relatively few in number, but disproportionately important. Sports articles

What I've been doing is following behind the article creator, who is in the midst of adding all the medal winning Olympic athletes, so I imagine there are tons of Italy articles. I'll start adding the listas for all the projects. I have to admit I didn't look as closely at Rowing or Cycling projects, although I did add the Football project for the soccer players. I can't say I recall adding the blp to assessments, but when I've been doing this, I really start the assessments session with a basic copy and paste of the first one I do, so it's entirely likely I mis-copied something. I'll honestly be glad when the article creator is done and I'm always happy when he's taken a break! Wildhartlivie (talk) 13:33, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

FlagBot

Hey, Thanks for your offer to help with the auto assessment of the unassessed WPFood articles. We have recently requested another bot go through and tag all relevant articles that fall within the food and beverage categories with the {{WikiProject Food and drink}} template. The problem is that there are now over 3000 unassessed articles in our project, with a lot more to be added once we have finished tagging the articles.

We are now overwhelmed with the work load required to assess thees newly added articles.

If you bot can get this done, then you will make our job a whole lot easier.

Also, could you have it take a look at any article tagged with either {{WPF}} or {{WikiProject Food and Drink/Foodservice taskforce}} tags and delete those them from talk pages as they have now been deleted.

Landwein

Hallo FlagSteward! I saw that the article Landwein is a disambig that mirrors the stated use of country wine, i.e., either a quality level of "real wine" or a fruit wine. This usage was introduced by you in an old edit. Since dewiki nor wiktionary in German include this usage of Landwein, I'm curious if you have any background? (I'm pretty sure that Deutscher Landwein can not refer to a fruit wine, since this is an official term in the German wine law.) Tomas e (talk) 09:49, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Regions in the Zinfandel lead, again

FlagSteward: Please have a look at Talk:Zinfandel#Napa and Sonoma counties climates. I believe you wrote that bit in the lead that refers to the climates of Napa and Sonoma (and you may recall I was in favor of dropping all mention of regional flavors from the lead, but I let it go). Anyway, a couple people wrote on the talk page that the lead contains a factual error. I don't have the source, and figured you do. Would you check it, please? Maybe the source is wrong (it disagrees with climate data), or you inadvertantly switched the region names and temperatures.

The article is going through a GA review this week, and I'm trying to fix up outstanding problems. I just now noticed that comment on the talk page concerning the lead section.

Ortisei
