QSL Players category

Hey, noticed your work on the Qatari league. Just wanted to let you know that I created a category for players who have played in the Qatar Stars League. The category is Category:Qatar Stars League players, so feel free to add players to it (I added about 100 or so). TonyStarks (talk) 05:32, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to thank you for the great work you are doing on Qatari football! Are you Qatari/of Qatari descent or do just live there (as your user page indicates)? TonyStarks (talk) 15:04, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No actually I live in Canada .. but I'm Algerian and a number of Algeria's stars are playing in Qatar (Bougherra, Belhadj, Ziani, Meghni). However, for what it's worth, I was born and raised in Dubai :D. And yes, the pages are in very bad shape but with just a few editors, namely yourself, the quality has improved tremendously! In any case, keep up the good work and if you need any help let me know. TonyStarks (talk) 18:20, 2 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks and good luck on your exams. TonyStarks (talk) 09:32, 3 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hey me again .. thanks for adding that interview on the Evanildo article, I couldn't much info on him. I'm guessing you read Arabic? I always assumed you didn't and wondered how you managed to do so much editing. Also, for the List of Qatari football transfers winter 2011–12 article. I noticed that some of the transfers listed are from summer. For example, Christian Wilhelmsson joined Ahli at start of season. Kanga Akalé is listed in both In and Out for Lekhwiya, pretty sure he was there at start of season as well. Same thing for Niang with Al Sadd. TonyStarks (talk) 16:12, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah sorry, I assumed they were summer signings. I forgot that the Qatari league runs its own schedule (sign anyone when you want :D). So yes, now that you mention it, you're probably right about including them. And frankly, I am impressed that you would go through all that trouble to translate and try to make out the meanings of those articles! I'm fluent in Arabic and can't even be bothered to read articles sometimes haha. Anyways, thanks for the prompt reply. Take care. TonyStarks (talk) 17:54, 15 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

PROD protocols

When contesting the proposed deletion of an article, as you did with Mohammed Salam, please explain your for doing so in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. In this case, the rest of your edit made the reason fairly obvious, so no harm done, but just please keep this in mind in the future. Thanks. Sir Sputnik (talk) 16:52, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, me again. I noticed that you added that Adel Lami was born stateless, just out of curiosity, do you have a source for that? I always assumed he was of Palestinian or Egyptian descent given the number of people from those countries in Kuwait but was never able to find anything. TonyStarks (talk) 14:29, 26 March 2012 (UTC) Thanks for the prompt reply. Like I said, it was more curiosity than anything else. Now that you mention it though, he's probably a bedouin from Iraq and as such his family would not have either nationality (Kuwait or Iraq). I have plenty of friends from that region and it is quite common. Anyways, thanks once again. Also, I'm trying to expand the Lekhwiya article, especially the intro. However, not sure what the best approach would be. I feel the intro should at least state they are the defending QSL champs the past 2 seasons. TonyStarks (talk) 17:31, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good! Any idea if we can find stats for the players for the 2009-2010 season? QSL.com.qa has stats for last season and this season but some of the players have been at the club even before that (Ilyas, Mothnani off the top of my head) and it would be good to have full stats for those players. TonyStarks (talk) 17:48, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Doing a season by season thing is a great idea .. however, it's a looooot of work lol. I just hope you know that before you get started. Up to you to decide whether it's worth it or not. I wouldn't mind helping if you get the page started, it'll be a bit easier with two people. TonyStarks (talk) 18:04, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Alright lol, good luck with that! I'll see if I can find anything once you're done. TonyStarks (talk) 18:15, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello .. I noticed you changed his stats for this season. I had 20 games and 16 goals and you changed it to 19 and 12. However, my 20 and 16 were after his 4 goals Qatar SC, maybe yours are before? His SoccerWay profile lists 16 goals and the commentator during one of the games today said that Tabata had 15, which is closer to 16 than your 12. Also, the QSL website lists him having 16. So pretty sure the stats I had were right. Please let me know. Thanks. TonyStarks (talk) 05:17, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's all good, just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking something. And for the record, I made the same exact mistake you did, I combined his loan stats and this season stats before updating his stats again. TonyStarks (talk) 10:09, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Qatari handball clubs

Hello Elspamo, me again. I noticed some of your edits on Qatari handball clubs, not sure if you're the one that created the articles or not but thought I'd let you know anyway. For the article titles, unless the handball club name is different from the "sports club" then the article title should be the same but should have (handball) added to the end. For example, for Al Sadd Handball Team, unless that is the official name of the club (backed with refs), the article title should be Sadd Sports Club (handball), since it's just the handball section of the club and I'm sure plays under the exact same name as the football team. Same thing for Al Rayyan. If you have any questions or concerns let me know, I'd be more than happy to help. TonyStarks (talk) 18:47, 7 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, long time, hope all is well. I was wondering if you had any more information on El Jaish's Libyan midfielder El Sayed Doukali? He played in at least one league game last season and he's been called up to Libya's NT. However, he isn't listed on the QSL website or SoccerWay. Here's his profile on El Jaish's website but I can't find the proper "English" spelling of his name. I was hoping you could help with that. He isn't listed in El Jaish's current squad either, I want to at least add him when I have the proper spelling of his name. He's number 22. TonyStarks (talk) 22:20, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah I already looked him up in Arabic, he came through Aspire like you said and then he went on to play for Al-Sadd before joining El Jaish. And yes his name was listed as Dukali Al Sayed Dukali in Arabic as well, but just wanted something more "official". Anyways, he should be part of Libya's team against Algeria on Sunday, so probably he will be listed on FIFA.com and I can take his name from there. Professional players in Qatar

If you could provide a source of where you got the list of professional players per Qatari team, that would be super great. Thanks --weka (talk) 20:29, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Al Ahli/Al Sailiya

Wouldn't it be better for the source to be provided from the QSL website that's in English instead of a newspaper in Arabic? You know... this one? --weka (talk) 20:34, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

So I have to ask...

How does an American like yourself come to like Qatari football.... I ask because I'm from Spain and I like it too --weka (talk) 00:25, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Whoa, that's interesting. So.. I assume you don't live in Qatar anymore? How many languagues do you speak? I like Qatari football because of its background and football. I don't know what exactly pinpoints my liking but I love watching it. I watch all my matches, too, on ALKASS. It's a great website for both streams and news. I live in USA so the games start at a decent time for me. And thanks, you too! --weka (talk) 15:17, 18 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just saw that you're complaining that changes were made "without any reason". Well, changes were made (by me) as per a source. If you've added something before then provide a reference, it's as simple as that my friend! Unless as per your user name, you're adding spam rather than credible data/edits. ANM

Many thanks for your expansion on Arab Nationalist Movement. However, I can't find any reference that the Qatari National Unity Front was linked to the ANM. Anything missing? --Soman (talk) 06:26, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. This book calls the Qatar National Unity Front the beginning of the 'Arab nationalist crisis' in Qatar and states it was formed when the Ba'athist regimes were negotiating the revival of the Arab unity movement with Gamal Abdel Nasser. The most significant evidence I can seem to find is from Abbas Kadhim, who alleges that a mini uprising was the result of the movement's formation; the movement happened to be made up of Qatari Arab nationalists and those 'sympathetic to the Ba'ath party'. This book provides further detail about the sentiments rather than the movement, claiming that the initial protest (made by Yemenis and Iraqis, apparently) was after the deposition of the nationalist Abd al-Karim Qasim and that the Egyptian government was also pressuring Qatar to finance Yemen. There was no printing press in Qatar at this time so it is hard to find records. Is this good enough, or is it nonetheless irrelevant to the ANM article? Elspamo4 (talk) 14:56, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think if we can't find any clear link with ANM as such, we need to remove it. I'll try to google in some Arabic-language sources also, I think there is still a chance that ANM would have been involved (they were active in other parts of the Gulf), I'll give you feedback. However, I think you have come across very good material for a separate article on the National Unity Front, which certainly appears notable enough to have an article of its own. --Soman (talk) 17:59, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This seems reasonable. Thanks for your input. I will make a separate article on the National Unity Front after I ascertain the Wikipedia notability requirements for such an organization. Keep up the good work, Elspamo4 (talk) 18:12, 24 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Trucial states to UAE

Heya. Did you truly think that was irrelevant? I thought it provided a link to the modern UAE that many not familiar with the area not make... Alexandermcnabb (talk) 07:42, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I think it was irrelevant to the context of piracy. However, I did not consider that some people would not make the connection between the Trucial States and the UAE, so I added a brief note stating that it is modern day UAE. The reason I shortened it is because the lead paragraph of a regional phenomena shouldn't be almost entirely slanted towards one country. The country gets plenty of mention in the lead and I think the transition from Trucial States to the UAE is explained aptly in the Pirate Coast section. Removing news of Tukya tribe

I am sorry but your removal of news is outright bias. Just because Saudia Arabia did not confirm it, it is not false. I have found 6 articles on the topic in Arabic, and followed a picture posted on the article that shows Saudi army equipment thrown on the ground. As nobody understands Arabic here on the english page, I did not link them. I have already started a discussion regarding this habit of only reporting what Saudia Arabia (and allies) has claimed and it is very dangerous to the integrity of the site. Leorion PO (talk) 09:08, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, while I understand your concern, I find it very unlikely that Saudia Arabia or it's allies would ever report on such an event due to it's moral effect. The news has been reported by various Arabic news sites, 6 can be seen on Google and there are pictures. The articles claim information from sources of tribal fighters and others. In the same effect, the Yemeni Army spokesman has denounced the attack which can be seen as also a sign of verifying the event. I am just trying to widen the scope of this war as it is quite obvious all information reported in European and American media comes only from Saudi sorces. Even the confirmed deaths of the 6 Saudi troops and HRW / UN reports were not reported in American/European. Leorion PO (talk) 12:31, 14 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Arabic sources

Hello, I am more than happy to translate and look for Arabic sources for any information. Unfortunately, as most media is controlled by the Gulf Kingdoms, it is really hard to find reliable english language articles. I will find anything for you, if you wish. ArabianWonders (talk) 19:28, 20 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Can you please halt the edits and modifications until we reach a conclusion. If you waited, you would realize that you mistranslated the arabic sources. ArabianWonders (talk) 13:26, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In addition, this report from Al-Mayadeen clears your previous doubt. With reports from locals and from the Al-Mayadeen correspondent. The video explains that chlorine, and phospurious was used which usually leave a large, dark cloud that is engulfed in flames and causes a shock. Exactly what happened in Sanaa. Officially, the Yemeni Army spokesman has formally accused Saudi Arabia of using illegal weapons. Also in that article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ArabianWonders (talkcontribs) 14:00, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I am not particularly versed in Wikipedia policies, but I do believe that most primary Yemeni sources would be considered as reliable sources on the military intervention, with some caveats (I may be wrong about this). However, I don't know of any Yemeni news outlets alleging the involvement of chemical warfare. It is inevitable that I would have mistranslated some parts of the Arabic-language articles; nonetheless, I was unable to identify any outright allegations of chemical weapons reported in Yemeni newspapers. As for Al Mayadeen, I wouldn't think that it would qualify as a reliable source (its wiki page claims it is "considered a propaganda platform for Iran and Hezbollah"), but this point can be further expounded upon on the talk page of the military intervention article. Are there any Yemeni sources which report on this claim made by the Yemeni Army official? I personally would not oppose their addition to the article, provided I am not wrong about the reliability of Yemeni sources. Elspamo4 (talk) 21:37, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for creating Al Souq (Doha), Elspamo4!

Wikipedia editor Roches just reviewed your page, and wrote this note for you:

I've reviewed the article on the Al Souq district of Doha. I'd suggest elaborating on Souq Waqif and any other notable places. Stats on the number of businesses would help since it's a commercial area with few residents (like the City of London)

Thanks so much for all your help! I apologize if I caused an edit conflicts. I created Flora of Qatar and Fauna of Qatar if you have any interest. They are pretty shabby articles at the moment. :) NotAnOmbudsman (talk) 22:10, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@NotAnOmbudsman: No problem! Most of the articles were very much needed; I simply never got around to creating them. I am currently in the process of helping improve Flora of Qatar by adding the taxonomy of all plants found in Qatar. This, obviously, is going to take quite a while. Hopefully I'll have time in the near future to help integrate your other articles into Wikipedia as well. Cheers. Elspamo4 (talk) 22:22, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Cool plan. But Zubarra and Jumailiyah look pretty cool if you need to get distracted. NotAnOmbudsman (talk) 22:33, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I see Zubara and its fort are well covered but I can't find much for Al Jumailiyah. is there an alternate spelling? NotAnOmbudsman (talk) 22:45, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is also known as Lijmiliya. I'll fill in some statistics using the government censuses. Elspamo4 (talk) 23:24, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hold on, I already made on article on that... Al Jemailiya. You should turn your page into a redirect. Elspamo4 (talk) 23:26, 8 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Thanks. NotAnOmbudsman (talk) 01:44, 9 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! The sources I saw discussed the abandoned village but I also recall seeing roads on a map that made me think that may be a town of this name as well as the abandoned village. Can you determine whether there is an inhabited area with the same name? Thanks. Have a great weekend. NotAnOmbudsman (talk) 21:39, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey. I think you're right. There are two places with similar names: Barthat Al Mafjar (or Zar Al Mafjar) and Al Mafjar. The latter is apparently the abandoned village. The book cited on the article states: "Les explorateurs dans l'ame fileront vers le nord par le côté, par de la Ghariya et atteindront le village abandonne d'Al Mafjar (interessent minaret) [...]". That leaves little doubt in my mind that Al Mafjar is abandoned. There are a lot of discrepancies about the nearby town, however. Qatar's Geographic Information System calls the nearby town "Barthat Al Mafjar". No information is provided so we can't determine whether its populated or abandoned. This website gives information on a 'locality' named Zar Al Mafjar. It states Al Mafjar is a part of this locality. I can't make much sense out of that. Furthermore, I have no idea whether it's populated or not. Sorry I couldn't be of much help. Elspamo4 (talk) 22:34, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Great. Actually that's very helpful. After I updated the article to say it was uninhabited I saw the categories got changed so I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a site that took it's name from a nearby village of the same name. I appreciate you double checking! I think we're good. :) NotAnOmbudsman (talk) 23:16, 10 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

My apologies

Hi, I think it's clear I owe you an apology. Having watched Tajiks for years, it used to be an article with almost no action apart from a couple of times when a troll with a number of socks attacked it, removing people from the infobox without any explanation. So when I first saw removals happening again, I thought it was more of the same. Obviously I was mistaken. You've done everything right here; you discussed on the talk page, you called for sources, you built a consensus and you asked NeilN for advice after the article was locked for the first time. I came in late and was simply to thick to realize this, and how different the situation was from the time the article was under attack. My sincerest apologies for the fact that my failure to grasp the situation caused some delay. As a small gesture of goodwill, now that the article in unprotected, I've gone ahead and done the change for which you argued and built a consensus. Once again, my most humble excuses for having misinterpreted this situation so badly. Jeppiz (talk) 22:05, 18 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeppiz: I very much appreciate your honesty and maturity. Thank you. Don't worry about it, I know you were acting in good faith. "No harm, no foul" as they say. I am aware that it wasn't the first time the article was disputed over, and certainly won't be the last, be it by socks, vandals or good faith editors. Islamic art articles

Hi, you may be interested in the discussion at Islamic art articles that need writing, where I've identified some areas of interest. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 20:21, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Chiswick Chap: Hi Chiswick Chap. In order for something to qualify as Islamic art, must it have categorical Islamic elements, or simply originate from an Islamic country? Some of the books I own, for instance, make distinctions between Islamic, Arab and Bedouin arts, so I'm unsure if they are distinctly different artistic styles or if they are all categorized as Islamic arts. If the latter, then I will gladly help improve the coverage of Islamic art when I get the chance. Elspamo4 (talk) 21:06, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ask Johnbod, but I'd say that at least it must come from Islamic people (some countries have mixed populations, so just coming from a country is a bit doubtful) and is part of their traditional culture; modern Arabic art probably does not qualify, whereas traditional Bedu art surely does. I doubt if "categorical Islamic elements" would be a workable definition. I think this agrees with the treatment in Islamic art. All the best, Chiswick Chap (talk) 21:18, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense, thanks. I'll read Islamic art to get a solid grasp of the concept. Elspamo4 (talk) 21:44, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Al Khor, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Cinema (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:20, 2 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

About the years-old unmaintained article on Qatar's national broadcaster/broadcasting-authority

Hey, there! It's that very same "i R sO smRt[sic]" IP editor! Well..

...To re-invest my efforts into explanation, here's what I was saying and gonna say [from scratch across a course of 3 edits, perhaps]:

: Part revd the edit as addition of a mere single source doesn't do anything. Moreover, it appears you couldn't revert the entirety of vandalism here — and that's why, it appears you were in rather bizzare-hurry to salvage this article about a discrete=non-notable subject. While I understand Wikipedia's oh-so-surprisingly startling-revelations on WP:WORLDVIEW as a non-stereotypical 'fIrSt...

…Worlder', but your efforts are for naught as you couldn't find even a right-source. <Part about failed-verification tag redacted and superseded by its edit-summary.> As my ref to "WORLDVIEW" tried to convey, I understand if you think this anciently-neglected article is of value to Qatarī society or those interested in knowing about them, but there's no salvaging this — per WP:NORESCUE. H/t: A [https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Al_Jazeera_Media_Network&diff=1000076607 recently-made

edit at AJMN's page] indicated that the entity mentioned in your citation actually shares the office-complex with them. [www.abu.org.my/portfolio-item/qatar-media-corporation An official-source indicates that QRTC is a precursor to "Qatar Media Corporation", an entity mostly well-claimed as purported financier of AJMN]. And the source added in this edit says it was established no later than 2009.

And yes.. This painstakingly-retrieved Emirātī source [of 2009] confirms its existence: https://irex.org/sites/default/files/pdf/media-sustainability-index-middle-east-north-africa-2009-qatar.pdf.

So given all of these conflicting-reports, I interpret it as while QGBTC was initially conceived as the replacement of permanently-abolished Information Ministry, if you will. Whereas QRTC was founded to inherit the operations of stations like Qatar TV from the abolished Information Ministry. And after 2008, QMC was established and based on their activities like recognising private media and such, in addition to operating the outlets previously operated by QRTC from the very same facility (that office-complex) — what happened in-effect in that very dark information-space (that article is tagged in and of itself, I understand) of the globe was that the edit on Public broadcasting is right, but only half. What actually occurred was that QMC is a currently-existing successor to both of QGBTC and QRTC, assuming the functions and remits of both and those 2 stand functionally-dissolved. So.. If anything, Qatar Media Corporation merits an article of its own based on the premise of trying to salvage this ancient-article. There are far more, non-foreign government funded sources on the same — as well. Thereby paving way for an expansive, better-quality article on English Wikipedia. —15:51, 25 February 2021 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.192.236.183 (talk)

And look, here's something else I found from official, still-live sourcing: The WP:PRIMARY
says it was established in 1995. And certainly not after that. Although not explicitly, but it does indicate that QMC is the contemporary successor. —203.192.236.183 (talk) 18:35, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Category:Qatari philanthropists requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Liz Read! Notice

The file File:Al-Sadd fan club.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fan logo which does not significantly enhance the article (which is about the team, not the fans club), and so fails WP:NFCC#8

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi, thanks for the offer. I'd be interested, especially since folklore wiki articles are severely lacking for certain regions, but I'm not sure how much I'd be able to contribute since my interests are very sporadic and confined to the Persian Gulf region. Still, in my free time, I could probably create and flesh out a few folklore-related articles using my current contributions and sources as a basis, particularly the "Folklore of X" articles.
