As a word of advice, the proposed title is pretty non-neutral, and I'd suggest that you change it to something like 'List of violent attacks on Jews'. Colony names in French West Africa

Just so you know, Senegambia and Niger, later Upper Senegal and the Niger was the name of one of the constituent colonies within the AOF. It contained neither modern Senegal or Niger, but most of what is modern Mali. A good source on the constantly changing names and boundaries is The Formation of the Government General of French West Africa. C. W. Newbury. I appreciate your comment. However, the paragraph in question in the article on French West Africa, refers to the eight territories that constitued the Federation, 2 of which were Senegal and Niger. As you pointed out, Senegambia and Niger, comprised most of modern Mali, the former French Soudan, which is also listed as one of the eight. The following was also placed on דוד55 Talk Page - I note that on July 9 you amended the lists of categories of many of the recipients of the Israel Prize, by substituting the the category of "Israel Prize in [a particular field] recipients" for the simple "Israel Prize recipients". Whilst it is clear that, where applicable, the recipients should be allocated the more specific category indicating the field in which the prize was awarded, I believe that the general category should also remain to enable users to view a complete list of those recipients for whom there is an article.Davshul (talk) 05:45, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I disagree with that. When an article is placed in a child category, it should not also be in a parent category unless there's a very good (usually technical) reason. There are basically three navigation aids on Wikipedia: Categories, Lists and Navigation boxes (WP:CLN). These are not meant to be independent, but are instead meant to complete each other. Right now we have a List of Israel Prize recipients, making the category navigation obsolete. Speaking of which, the first article in the main category should be the list (which it is now). —Ynhockey ^(Talk) 10:55, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am relatively new to Wikipedia and note your comment. In the meantime, it would appear that דוד55 (on whose talk page I have left a message drawing his attention to this discussion) has reinstated the parent "Israel Prize Recipient" category as a category for those articles on recipients in which a child category - "Israel Prize in [XXXX] Recipient" - also appears. However, there is also a problem as to correct child category to choose. There are now some 40 different "child" categories on the Israel Prize recipients category page. Over the years, the Committee awarding the Prize have been far from consistent in the language used by them in describing the subject for which the prize is given, and this is further complicated by the terminology used by me and others in translating the subject (for example, is “law” the same category as “science of law” or “jurisprudence” or “special contribution to society and the state in advancement of Hebrew law”?) (or is “lifetime achievement & special contribution to society”, the phrase currently used, the same category as “special contribution to society and the State”, the phrase used in earlier years?). Accordingly, as to which category to choose (or even the choice of categories to choose from) is somewhat subjective, which could, possibly, justify the reason for retaining the parent category in addition to the child category. Also, although I have been working for some weeks in expanding the names and details in the "List of Israel Prize Recipients" (there were very relatively few and it was very haphazard before I started at the end of April), it is still not yet complete as I still have 1969 to 1981 to complete, hopefully in the next week or so.Davshul (talk) 20:55, 11 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In almost all cases when an article is placed in a child category, it should not also be in a parent category. In this specific case, I think, it may be useful for many users that the article will be in the parent and child directory. Completion of List of Israel Prize Recipients

In the article List of Israel Prize recipients, the names and details of all the recipients (both the chronological list and the alphabetical list) have now been completed. What steps should now be taken in order to reassess the article's rating on the Wikipedia Israel Project quality scale, and also to ensure that that the article is correctly referenced within the project? Hi Davshul! Firstly, the barnstar is well deserved. You took an important topic that was lacking and improved it. I sincerely hope you do the same for other Israel-related articles and lists. To your query, I will respond in two points:

1. In the past, we used to assess all list articles as 'list', but then general consensus on Wikipedia came to a conclusion that lists, like articles, need to be assessed on the regular scale (stub, start, C, B, GA, A, FA). This creates a problem because we don't have strict criteria for lists. The closest to that is the criteria at FLC. Personally I believe that lists should only be assessed as stub, start, B and FL because we don't need such an elaborate system for them. In that respect, the lists as it currently stands would be start-class, because it is complete but lacking a proper lead and table formatting for B-class. This is my personal view that might not reflect consensus, but I am not aware of anyone else rating Israel-related lists on the quality scale. Feel free to initiate a discussion about it at WT:ISRAEL, and if you don't want to, I may do so during the weekend.
2. In terms of referencing and navigation, I recommend creating a navigation template for each year or decade that the prize was awarded. A link to the list and the main article would appear in the heading of the template, while the names of the people would appear in the template itself. The only reason not to take this course of action at this point would be because most prize recepients don't have articles. However, on the other hand this might make more editors aware that so many prominent Israelis are missing articles and perhaps someone will take up the task of creating some.

Davshul, I understand why linking to another Wiki article is problematic...but....I couldn't find a list in English anywhere else. I have now written to the Israeli Ministry of Education and its various departments to find out if such a list does exist. Any ideas? Soosim. I do not believe that a full list in English appears anywhere else, apart from the List of Israel Prize recipients on Wikipedia. This is why I have dedicated so much time to completing and maintaining such list, and am gradually creating articles on each of the recipients. On the specific citation issue, the Wiki guidelines specifically prohibit source citations to other Wikipedia articles, whether in English or another language. Obviously the other article can either be Wikilinked or, as in this case, it can be specifically listed under "See also" (which I have added to all articles of Israel Prize recipients). For the moment, as the regards the Israel Prize, I have been concentrating on tidying up existing articles on recipients and the various categories of recipients - there's a lot of work to be done! Also, following your suggestion of a few weeks ago, in light of the completion of the List, I have been gradually removing the parent "Israel Prize recipient" category, provided there is reference to the List and the relevent subcategory or subcategories, which I have been extending somewhat. Hi Gilabrand. I have been working for some time on the List of Israel Prize recipients and, following completion of the list, I have been concentrating on the several hundred existing articles of the individual recipients in order to bring measure of consistency to how the award of the Prize (and other prizes) are treated (although I have not attempted to make such treatment identical in all cases). As regards the the issues of "References/Notes" - at one stage for a short period, I started adopting "Notes" rather than "References" as a preferred term. However, following your comment regarding David Rubinger a few days ago, and as I did not feel particularly strongly on the subject, I ceased making such change (although pursuant to WP:footers, both would appear to be acceptable, although "References" is more popular). However, there are a number of instances where there are cited "reflist" references (including a reference, generally added by me, giving a source in connection with the award of the Israel Prize) as well as lists of "References" not specifically cited in the text (none of which were posted by me). In these circumstances, I have adopted the method used extensively on Wikipedia on terming the cited references as "Notes" and the non-cited as "References". As regards your comment regarding the use of the term "Bibliography", in WP:footers this term is specifically discouraged as it "may be confused with a list of printed works by the subject of a biography." Well, I have also been working for several years to create some kind of consistency, and have following the guidelines cited above. A bibliography is a list of books used for reference. A list of books by the subject of the biography is called: Published works. Differentiating "references" and "notes" in this way only causes more confusion, and undoes whatever consistency I have introduced over the years in WP articles.--Gilabrand (talk) 10:30, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gilabrand. This is clearly an issue about which you feel quite strongly. Accordingly, where there are references that are not cited in the text I am, as suggested by you, now generally placing these under a "Bibliography" caption (and will gradually apply this to all articles on Israel Prize recipients recently amended by me). The term appears to be widely used despite its discouragement in WP:footers. (I agree with you as to the definition of "bibliography' but there does appear to be some basis for Wikipedia's contention that it might be confusing, as in the short time since reading your latest comment I have come across examples in Ovadia Yosef and Emanuel Goldberg. The incorrect use of the term "Bibliography" (namely, the use of such term in connection with the subjects's published works instead of a list of works used for reference) appears more widespread than I expected. In addition to those mentioned above, and without specifically searching, I have come across quite a number of instances, even in well-researched articles (for example, Abba Eban, Emile Habibi, Yehoshafat Harkabi, Gavriel Salomon), which I have corrected. Wikipedia's view, expressed in WP:footers, that the term "Bibliography", even when correctly used, should be avoided as it is likely to cause confusion, appears valid. Accordngly, where possible, I intend using an alternative term, such as "Further reading" or , if relevent, "External links", and will also employ these terms to described those references that are not cited in the text (which I had initially started placing under the caption "Bibliography"). Avigur

Hey Davshul. I've changed the Shaul Avigur article so that it now has a notes section for {{reflist}} and a separate references section below it for the book Every Spy a Prince. If you look at the article history, I wrote this several years ago before inline refs were very popular on WP, and thus I simply wrote the book as the sole source. Eventually I should go back and add inline citations with page numbers, but for the time being this will do. See the picture on the right of Wikipedia:Footers#Notes_and_References. Further reading is only for books/articles that would help the reader get a better understanding of the topic, but were not used as sources for the article itself. I hope that made some sense. Thanks! (BTW, I just did the same thing to Meir Amit. It is unfortunately a bit confusing. Whatever the chosen method of displaying inline citations and general references at the bottom of a page, a book/article labeled as a "reference" or "source" or "bibliography" (in the sense of a source) should never be relabeled as "further reading", as this would imply that the information in the article did not come from it, which is not the case. Nobel Prize laureates

Hi. I noticed that early this morning you went around to various biography articles about Nobel Prize laureates, adding to each a "See also" with a link to List of Nobel laureates. This is inappropriate given Wikipedia layout policies. It's also wholly redundant in several cases where you've added the link under a "See also" section when the link was already present in one of various {{Nobel Peace Prize Laureates 19XX-19XX}} templates. Please be more careful in the future when adding internal links to pages and that you follow the policies of WP:ALSO and WP:MOS regarding "See also" sections. Hi DKqwerty. with reference to your comment. On articles of all Nobel Laureates, other than those of the Nobel Peace Prize laureates, there is indeed a link to the complete list of Nobel Laureates, the link being from the words "Nobel Laureates" in "Nobel Laureates in Literature", "Nobel Laureates in Physics", etc. at the haeding to the template near the foot of the page. However, the template relating to the Peace Prize Laureates does not contain the words "Nobel Laureates" in the heading, and accordingly there is no link to the complete list of Nobel Laureates (only to a list of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates). It is for this reason that I added a "See also" section, with a reference to the complete list. This was only added with regard to the Peace Prize laureates. Accordingly, reference to the list does not appear to be redundant, nor could I see where it was in contravention of the Wiki policies mention by you. Policy-wise, this from WP:ALSO:

Links already integrated into the body of the text are generally not repeated in a "See also" section, and navigation boxes at bottom of articles may substitute for many links.

If you click the word "laureates" in the caption of the template, it links to (the "complete") List of Nobel laureates, exactly the article you're trying to add to a "See also" section. So, according to policy, that's redundant. DKqwerty (talk) 16:32, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There appears to be a lack of consistency between the various articles on Nobel Peace Prize Laureates. In some (which frankly I had not noticed) the word "Laureates" links to the complete list. However, in others (e.g.. Barack Obama) it does not. 16:42, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

I looked at this one again, and I still think the tag should stay for now. The purpose of such tags is to warn readers (especially high school and college stduents) that the article is incomplete in some way. Hi Davshul. If you want to move a page, please use the move tag at the top. Do not copy text from an article and paste it into a new one, as you did with Ya'akov Cohen/Ya'akov Cohen (rabbi) as it breaks the WP:GDFL licensing and requires an admin to move/delete/restore to undo. British Jews

I notice that you have been adding people to the British Jews category. People should go into English, Scottish, Welsh etc Jews, which in turn comes under "British Jews". Nobel Prize

Hey! I saw you had done some work on the list of nobel laureates. I am currently working on the Nobel Prize article. Since it is a top importance article and not even GA class I am trying to make it a GA article and perhaps further after that. However, I'm in a state now where I could use some help. I need a new pair (several pairs in fact) of eyes to look at the article and the talk page for improving prose, debation of different things and some sourcing. Do you got any possibility to help out?

Regarding your comment at WP:CFDS relating to the Israelis of descent category—do you intend on starting a full CFD to propose the change you suggest? The change you're suggesting is unrelated to my suggested change from "Israelis" to "Israeli people", so unless you intend on starting a CFD right away we can probably make the change I proposed and leave your proposal to a time when you or someone wants to formally propose it via CFD. You definitely would need to raise the issue via a full CFD if you are worried about changing "descent" to "origin". That is not an issue for the speedy renaming section—it falls outside of C2C. The "people" has been added per C2C, so now you can go ahead and nominate them for your change. For simplicity's sake, I think this is the best route rather than trying to piggyback the two changes together. Go ahead and nominate the newly created ones for the change. Wait a minute, what do you mean by "people" because in Israel it's much more complicated since in the political state of Israel, Jewish and non-Jewish citizens are the same, however, at the same time, Israel is also THE Jewish state and Israeli Jewish citizens need to be identified as such due to the ethnic and religious definitions of Jewish identity that by several millennia precedes and supersedes and goes beyond what Israeli politics or laws since 1948 may or may not say since in the broader sense it is Jewish Law and Jewish history that play the key role in teaching who and what are Jews and who and what are Israeli Jews in contradistinction to Israeli people in a meaningless generic sense. More clarity about Israeli Jews needed in your CFD

Hi Davshul: Regarding your CFD of Israelis, what do you think of my my suggestion to rethink and rename your CFD [3] as follows: "RELATED OBSERVATION: There was some debate recently when similar proposals were thrown about at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2010 June 16#Category:American Jews by national origin where the suggestion to rename to "XYZ Jews of ABC origin" went nowhere, and leaving the older and more basic category names such as Category:Mexican American Jews and Category:Iraqi American Jews etc etc etc and the rest intact. The best solution would be to propose to rename this CFD to read Propose renaming the following (category pages listed under Category:Israeli people by ethnic or national origin): Category:Israeli people of American descent to Category:Israeli American Jews; Category:Israeli people of Argentine descent to Category:Israeli Argentinian Jews etc etc etc for all. This way it's clear what the subject is, Israeli Jews and not Israeli non-Jews such as Arab citizens of Israel aka as Israeli Arabs for which there could be categories like Category:Israeli Egyptian Arabs meaning those who are descendants of Arabs who came from Egypt etc etc etc for all non-Jewish groups in Israel. This would create real accuracy and not what is suggested here which is just the same furniture being moved from one side of the room to the other, because the words "Israeli people" means all Israelis and that includes both Jews and non-Jews who are Israeli citizens. Of course to Jews, the word "Israeli/s" generally or colloquially means "Jewish Israeli/s" but the fact of the matter is that as far as Israeli law and the State of Israel is concerned its Jewish and non-Jewish citizens are all "Israelis" therefore this CFD rename is pointless and equals "six of one and half a dozen of the other" and makes no difference at all." British mandate of Palestine

Hi, these are Britain-related, and therefore come under the rule about date-formatting for anglophone countries. British date format is the international one. There are now some 100 articles in this series using the Month followed by Day format. Wikipedia states that the date format chosen by the first major contributor in the early stages of an article should generally continue to be used. As regards the dashes/hyphen change, I have no problem with changes made by you, my reverting the same was the consequence of your including the date format change in the same edit. I would also add that the summary given by you totally misrepresented the extent of the edits made by you, merely referring to "fixed dashes using a script", whereas your edits went far beyond this. • The Manual of Style does indeed have provision for retaining the date format of the first major contributor. However, this rule is trumped in the case of articles about British subjects, in which case close national ties applies. I have no objection to the change in date format, provided such change extends throughout the series and is not limited to isolated pages. I would really like to see 13th century in South Africa merged into ADs in Southern Africa, though I suppose a redirect could be left behind. The 13th is just, well... empty, and also leaves a redlink in the Timeline, not to mention my terribly/all-important bright, shiny new navbox... Do I seriously have to go through the whole process of requesting a merge? If so, I'm just not up to it, and will leave it alone. Hi. Howabout, at this stage, creating a redirect for both 13th century in South Africa and 14th century in South Africa to ADs in Southern Africa. This will, I believe, remove the redlinks from Timeline of South African history, but leave the possiblilty of re-establishing the pages as separate articles should sufficient information become avaialable in the future. At the moment the only item in 13th century in South Africa is already mentioned in the ADs in Southern Africa article. Two other point as far as the AD page is concerned: The page is entitled AD but the [[Timeline of South African history|Timeline] page refers to CE. I believe there should be consistency. The article created by me is much wider than the jewish virtual library article and was prepared without even knowledge of the existence of the such article. At the time of its creation, it was based solely on Hebrew sources. It may well be expanded by me to include information from additional sources (both Hebrew and English), but this will be done without any reference to the jewish virtual library article. Obviously, when dealing with facts about a person's life, some of the facts must appear in both places, but, as mentioned above, no part of the article was copied from the jewish virtual library article. Deleted category: Irish people of Jewish Descent

I recently re-created the category Category:Irish people of Jewish descent. You'll notice the link is red, because it was delted as per you discussion here. However, as you may notice there are many categories with the formula 'X people of Jewish descent'. And while you may disagree with labeling living people, or misuse of categories, being of Jewish descent can only be true or false. I agree 'sloppy application' of the 'X Jews' categories are given, but that is because of people who identify themselves as being (or not being) Jewish. With Jewish descent however, you cannot dispute the fact that one of your anncestors may have been Jewish, in the same way if your anncestor was African. Whatever a person says about themselves, giving that person a 'x of jewish descent' cat is true - because its true. You get what I mean.

More to the point - my re-creation of the Irish people of Jewish descent (if you click the red link above), is actually different from the version that was deleted July 9th. My version has a properly structured cat links (following standard cats of 'X people of Jewish descent'), it links to the 'Irish people by ethnic or national origin' and 'people of jewish descent by nationality', both of which are container categories. You will also notice that the category is no longer empty, and in fact has Bob Geldof in it.

I believe that all the points I have made above, counteract all of the arguements used by yourself and others to delete the (not so well maintained version) originally. Please will you allow the category to reopen in the way which was created by me? Colt .55 (talk) 21:02, 26 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I regret to point out that the date stated by you (in May 1949) is not the date when South Africa first recognised the State of Israel. De Facto recognition of Israel by South Africa took place in May 1948, a few days after Israel's declaration of independence, such recognition having been accorded by General Smut's United Party (which was voted out of power in the general election of May 26, 1948). This is confirmed by a number of sources, including the following by:

• American Jewish Year Book 1948-1949 page 302, which (according to p. 297) was written in July 1948.
• American Jewish Year Book, 1950 page 394.
• Encyclopedia Judaica 1971 volume 15, page 206.
• Chaim Weitzman's Trial and Error, page 585.

Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Asia, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant!
