The utility is to differentiate between articles that are missing a short description and don’t need a short description. Template:Infobox referendum

Hello - re your addition of a default description of simply 'referendum', would it not be better to follow WP:SDNONE and have a short description which was the same as the article title (which in all cases, will be more detailed than just 'referendum'). Not all Referendums have "Referendum" in their title name. WP:SDNONE would not apply for those articles. That being said, with referendums that have "referendum" in their title it would, and that could be coded into the template to have a switch case for "none" for articles with "Referendum" in their title, and a year to go alongside it. Having mulled it over some more, there are other quite important issues, the first one being quite serious:

1. The infobox is used on quite a lot of non-referendum articles (like 51st state or Inverness Caledonian Thistle F.C.) and you are giving such articles an incorrect short description if there is not one there already
2. Articles that use the infobox include referendums, plebiscites and ballot measures. A short description of "referendum" is not appropriate for plebiscites as in some countries that has a different legal meaning to a referendum (and will look weird in other cases – readers may be thinking 'Why is the article title 'plebiscite' but the description 'referendum'?')
3. I'm also not sure 'referendum' is an appropriate short description for ballot measures?

Oh dear. Which article? I was running batch edits to add short descriptions and I made a huge mistake by forgetting to filter out articles without short descriptions. Short descriptions of books

I have had to replace several new short descriptions of books you have added that say only that the book is by somebody or other. That is useless as a short description. If the book comes up in a mobile search, readers are going to see that short description and be uninformed. What is DescDash and why is it inserting invisible nbsp characters?

It appears that you are doing a lot of great work with short descriptions, possibly using a tool called DescDash. In this edit, the short description ended up with an invisible nbsp character that needed to be fixed. Just noticed your edit on Dead Internet Theory. The page is still under construction, and a lot of the "see also" section is stuff that is hoped to be worked into the main article in the future but lacks adequate citations at the moment. We may need an internet culture infobox to make the list a bit shorter. I trimmed it to 10 links from 16 though.

This comment is regarding your edit summary however. The comment when you added the template, "jesus," had me a bit confused for a bit as we do have mention of "Shrimp Jesus" on the page. When I realized that it was your comment on the content of the section however, I decided to drop by and leave a message. Wikipedia:Civility states that edit summaries should "Be clear about what you did, so that other editors can assess your changes accurately," "Use neutral language," and "Don't make snide comments," among other things. I don't think your edit summary met this criteria, but may be wrong and misunderstanding how you intended the comment to be read. Just thought I'd let you know how it came off to me, so you could be aware for future edit summaries and avoid any misunderstandings in the future. Unhelpful short descriptions

Adding the short description "Soviet chess tournament" to articles such as 1920 USSR Chess Championship is not helpful as that short description is less informative than the article title itself. It's especially unhelpful to give the same short description to dozens of articles that already have clear and unambiguous titles. You can see the talk page Wikipedia talk:short description to see that that guideline is currently a controversial ambiguous mess so I try to avoid it when I can. Since the guideline is so vague, I try to avoid using it for proper nouns (given it’s capitalization for the Manual of Style, I assume "USSR Chess Championship" is) if any of the words changed. Repetitive short descriptions really aren’t the end of the world, but If you are wondering why I am doing this, I have been working on the last year trying to rid Wikipedia of its no short description backlog.

When you add the short description, "Soviet chess tournament" to 1920 USSR Chess Championship you are not improving the encyclopedia. (Personal attack removed) That short description adds nothing and is worthless. The article title says everything needed and no shorter or different description can improve it. Short descriptions can be helpful on other articles, especially biographies, since it is useful to know why a person is notable and this is not apparent from the article title (the person's name). I am declogging an enormous backlog of mostly sports related events articles that is in the hundreds of thousands. As Theodore Roosevelt said, it is not the critic who counts but the man in the arena, so please feel free to help with this backlog. I am trying my best, please remember to WP:ASG.
