জেৰুজালেম বিগত ৩০০০ বছৰ জুৰি ইহুদী, প্ৰায় ২০০০ বছৰ খ্ৰীষ্টান আৰু ১৪০০ বছৰ ধৰি মুছলমান ধৰ্মাৱলম্বী লোকৰ বাবে পবিত্ৰ তীৰ্থস্থান ৰূপে পৰিগণিত হৈ আহিছে। ২০০০ চনৰ জেৰুজালেমৰ পৰিসংখ্যা ইয়েৰবুক ( The 2000 Statistical Yearbook) জেৰুজালেমত ১২০৪ চিনাগগ (synagogue), ১৫৮ গীৰ্জা আৰু ৭৩টা মছজিদ আছে।[15]

জেৰুজালেমত ইহুদীসকলৰ ঐতিহাসিক পবিত্ৰ মন্দিৰ (Holy temple) আছিল আৰু ইয়াৰে অৱশিষ্ট হিচাপে ইহুদী অংশত বৰ্তমান ৱেষ্টাৰ্ন ৱাল (Western Wall) অৱস্থিত। এই পবিত্ৰ মন্দিৰৰ ভিতৰতে ইহুদীসকলে পৃথিৱী সৃষ্টিৰ স্থান থকা বুলি বিশ্বাস কৰে। শ্ৰুতি অনুসৰি ইয়াতে আব্ৰাহামে তেওঁৰ পুত্ৰ আইজাকক বলি দিবলৈ সাজু হৈছিল।[16][17]

আনহাতে খ্ৰীষ্টানসকলে বিশ্বাস কৰে যে যীশুক জন্মৰ পিছতে জেৰুজালেমলৈ অনা হৈছিল আৰু দ্বিতীয় মন্দিৰত ৰখা হৈছিল।[18][19] জেৰুজালেমৰ জিয়ন পৰ্বত (Mount Zion)ত থকা ’Cenacle’ নামৰ অঞ্চলটো যীশুৰ অন্তিম আহাৰ (Last Supper) ৰ স্থান বুলি গণ্য কৰা হয়।[20][21]
