William Styron adalah Novelis dari Amerika Serikat, lahir di Virginia pada tahun 1925.[1] Ia belajar dalam bidang penulisan di Duke University dan kemudian pindah ke New York untuk memulai karier sebagai penulis.[1]
Pada tahun 1951, William Styron menerbitkan novel pertamanya yang berjudul Lie Down in Darkness. Ia kemudian ikut wajib miiter dalam Perang Korea.[1]
Pengalaman Styron dalam marinir AS dituangkannya dalam novel selanjutnya, The Long March.[1] Novel tersebut menceritakan perlakuan brutal terhadap anggota marinir dalam latihan mereka.[1] Novel ini meraih kesuksesan besar sehingga sejak itu Styron menjadi terkenal dan semakin produktif melahirkan karya-karya berikutnya.[1]
Karya Styron yang terkenal dan paling laku adalah Sophie's Choice.[1]
