Di Pertempuran Edington, pasukan kerajaan Anglo-SaxonWessex di bawah kepemimpinan Alfred Agung mengalahkan Tentara Besar Biadab pimpinan Guthrum pada sebuah tanggal antara 6 dan 12 Mei 878 M, menghasilkan Traktat Wedmore pada tahun yang sama. Sumber-sumber primer menyebut pertempuran tersebut terjadi di "Ethandun" atau "Ethandune", dan konsensus cendekiawan menghubungkan lokasi tersebut dengan wilayah saat ini dari Edington di Wiltshire. Pertempuran tersebut juga disebut sebagai Pertempuran Ethandun, sebuah nama yang masih dipakai.

An additional inscription reads:
THIS STONE, PRESENTED BY F. SWANTON AND SONS, NORTH FARM, WEST OVERTON, IS A SARSEN STONE SIMILAR TO THOSE AT KINGSTON DEVERILL, THE AREA WHERE KING ALFRED RALLIED SAXON LEVIES FROM HAMPSHIRE, WILTSHIRE AND SOMERSET TO MARCH AGAINST GUTHRUM'S VIKING ARMY BASED AT CHIPPENHAM.
