Dál Riata

Dál Riata (juga disebut Dalriada atau Dalriata) adalah kerajaan Gaelik yang terletak di pesisir barat Skotlandia (saat itu Pictland) dan sebagian dari Ulster. Pada akhir abad ke-6 dan awal ke-7, kerajaan ini menguasai wilayah Argyll and Bute dan Lochaber di Skotlandia dan County Antrim di Irlandia Utara.^[1]

Di Argyll, Dál Riata terdiri dari tiga kindred: Cenél Loairn (kindred Loarn) di Argyll utara dan tengah, Cenél nÓengusa (kindred Óengus) di Islay, dan Cenél nGabráin (kindred Gabrán) di Kintyre; terdapat kindred keempat yang disebut Cenél Chonchride di Islay, namun kindred ini terlalu kecil. Pada akhir abad ke-7, kindred lain yang disebut Cenél Comgaill (kindred Comgall) telah muncul dan berbasis di Argyll timur. Kerajaan ini mencapai puncak kejayaannya di bawah pimpinan Áedán mac Gabráin (berkuasa dari tahun 574 hingga 608), namun perluasan wilayahnya berhenti karena dikalahkan oleh Æthelfrith dari Northumbria dalam Pertempuran Degsastan pada tahun 603. Kekalahan besar di Irlandia dan Skotlandia pada masa kekuasaan Domnall Brecc (meninggal tahun 642) mengakhiri "zaman keemasan" Dál Riata, dan kerajaan ini menjadi klien Northumbria, dan kemudian menjadi bawahan Pict. Nasib kerajaan ini setelah akhir abad ke-8 masih diperdebatkan. Asal usul

Duan Albanach mengisahkan tiga anak laki-laki Erc— Fergus Mór, Loarn, dan Óengus— yang menaklukan Alba (Skotlandia) sekitar tahun 500 M. Agama dan seni
