2016年工黨黨魁選舉（英語：2016 Labour Party leadership election）緣由於2015年9月杰里米·科尔宾當選工黨黨魁後，反對者批評他在英國去留歐盟公投中爭取留歐（英语：Britain Stronger in Europe）沒有給予大力支持而作出的挑戰[3]。

科尔宾領導的緊張時期間，英國公民公投決定離開歐盟，影子內閣外交大臣（英语：Shadow Foreign Secretary）彭浩禮隨即因為曾表示不信任科尔宾而在6月25日被解職[4]；隨後兩天影子內閣（英语：Shadow Cabinet of Jeremy Corbyn）多名成員相繼辭職[5]，國會工黨議員中亦有172名議員支持對他發起不信任投票，僅有40名支持郝爾彬[6]。據工黨副黨魁湯姆·沃特森稱[7]，他曾向郝爾彬指出其作為領導者的地位將面臨挑戰，但科尔宾表示不會辭職[8]。

6月下旬時，安吉拉·伊格爾和歐文·史密斯相繼被指出有興趣參選黨魁：伊格爾於7月11日宣布參選[9][10]；而史密斯於7月13日作出同樣舉動[11]。中央行政委員會之後決定作為現任黨魁的郝爾彬將自動參加是次選舉，毋須經國會工黨議員提名[12]。此前一些政治分析人士預測，郝爾彬如果不能自動參選，將很難獲得提名的必要數量[13]。

7月19日伊格爾退出選舉，剩下史密斯與郝爾彬兩人競逐黨魁[14]。伊格爾指出，她在獲得較少提名後就決定改為支持史密斯；而史密斯則在BBC的訪談中透露伊格爾是一位「明星」，如果他勝出選舉，伊格爾將會是（他的）右手[15][16]。
