湯瑪斯·福賽斯·托倫斯

湯瑪斯·福賽斯·托倫斯（英文：Thomas Forsyth Torrance或稱T.F. Torrance；1913年8月30日—2007年12月2日）^MBE，FRSE，FBA。他是蘇格蘭的更正教神學家。

早年生活

托倫斯在1913年8月30日於四川成都出生，是內地會宣教士湯瑪斯·托倫斯（Thomas Torrance； 1871-1959）和安妮·伊利莎伯·托倫斯（Annie Elizabeth Torrance；1883-1980）的長子。[1][2]他的全名湯瑪斯·福賽斯·托倫斯取自他的曾祖父。[1]他在中國住了13年才回英國。

他曾在愛丁堡大學、牛津大學和巴塞爾大學修學。他自1931年起在愛丁堡修讀古典文學和哲學。由於他對於哲學、神學和倫理學的實在論逐漸成形，自他在1934年轉到新學院(愛丁堡)修讀神學後，他開始質疑弗里德里希·施萊爾馬赫的神學方法和其缺乏客觀元素的實在科學主義。托倫斯認為，此客觀元素意指神學概念需由事物本身的客觀性質來定斷。[3]由此可見，神學與科學差別不大，唯一不同的是兩者本身的客觀性質。以此推論，從科學角度來看，世界是在上帝的創造裡；而從神學角度來看，上帝作為創造者、協調者與救贖者，與創造物毫無隔離，衪道成肉身在衪的愛子、在時間與空間範圍內，讓世界能與衪和解。此觀點令托倫斯反對所有二元論，認為此有礙人類理解上帝與他們在歷史中的互動。他也反對任何形式的主觀主義，認為這無助人類客觀地理解他們自己。托倫斯深受休·羅斯·麥金托甚（Hugh Ross Mackintosh；1870-1936）[4]和但以理·拉蒙特（Daniel Lamont；1869-1950）影響。前者的神學以基督為中心，又強調神學與宣教的關係；後者則著重基督教與科學文化的關係。[5]

學生時代與初期教授生涯

托倫斯於1936年獲得布萊基獎學金 （Blackie Fellowship）到中東進修。此旅程不乏驚險情節：他在伊拉克巴士拉被誤會為間諜而被判死刑。後來他說服官員們他只是神學生，才能經過巴格達進入敘利亞。[6] 他後來回到蘇格蘭繼續修學，專攻系統神學，並以一級榮譽畢業。及後，他前往巴塞爾向卡爾·巴特學習。托倫斯於1938至1939年間在位於紐約的奧本神學院（Auburn Theological Seminary）教學。他原獲普林斯頓大學聘請教授宗教研究，但他最後決定回到正在打仗的家鄉蘇格蘭。[6] 他於1939至1940年在牛津大學奧里爾學院修學。1940年3月20日被按立為傳道人。在第二次世界大戰期間，他為在北非和意大利北部的蘇格蘭士兵提供傳道上和實質上的支援。而他也靠著上帝的恩典逃過多次火災。[4] 他於戰後回到他的教區埃利斯（Alyth）服事，後來在阿巴丁的比奇格羅夫（Beechgrove）教會當傳道人，踏上了他敬重的教授休·羅斯·麥金托甚的步伐。1946年他與瑪格麗特·伊迪斯·斯皮爾 （Margaret Edith Spear）訂婚並以一級榮譽（magna cum laude）完成他的博士，論文題目為《使徒教父的救恩教義》。10月2日與瑪格麗特在英格蘭巴斯附近的庫姆·唐教會（Combe Down Parish Church）結婚。托倫斯的家庭成員包括：現在在赫瑞瓦特大學教學的經濟學家和哲學家-長子湯瑪斯·斯皮爾·托倫斯（Thomas Spear Torrance；1947年7月3日-）；普林斯頓神學院前校長和教父學教授-二子伊恩·理查·托倫斯（Iain Richard Torrance；1949年1月13日-）；愛丁堡的註冊醫生-幼女艾麗森·米塔·托倫斯（Alison Meta Elizabeth Torrance；1951年4月15日-）。

托倫斯於1983年獲赫瑞瓦特大學頒發榮譽博士。[7]

神職人員

托倫斯曾當1976至1977年的蘇格蘭教會年會主席（Moderator of the General Assembly），而他兒子伊恩則在2003至2004年擔當此職位。作為一個更正教神職人員和神學家，他致力促進不同宗派的合一里程、積極與聖公會、信義宗、東正教、和天主教保持友好關係。為表揚他對東正教會合一的供獻，他在1973年被希臘東正教會阿克蘇姆主教（Archbishop of Axum）按立為首席司祭（Protopresbyter）。[1]他又曾在1974年當更正教與天主教聖餐研究小組的成員之一，該會當時在荷蘭 沃德斯霍顿（Woudschoten）開會，而他也因此認識了著名天主教合一神學家伊夫·孔加爾（Yves Congar）。他代表蘇格蘭教會於1949至1951年與英格蘭教會談論合一事宜，當中不單談及屬靈上的合一、也談到真正的合一計劃。[8]他於1954至1962年是蘇格蘭教會浸禮委員會主席（當時阿拉斯代爾·赫倫的父親約翰·赫倫是該會的秘書），而他曾出席普世教會協會1954年在伊利諾州埃文斯頓的會議。

而托倫斯又曾在1975年3月在瑞士主領有關卡爾·拉納（Karl Rahner）的研討會，認為拉納的三一神學有助促進東西方天主教與福音派在合一議程上的發展。他也在改革宗和羅馬天主教就因信稱義和恩典的討論上甚有貢獻。此外，托倫斯的寫作或多或少看到耶猶對話。他於1948年創立了《蘇格蘭神學期刊》（Scottish Journal of Theology），由他的兒子伊恩在耶魯大學和拜仁·斯平克斯（Bryan Spinks）繼續編輯。

教義神學

他的神學為後人所愛戴的其中一個主要原因是他的神學雖以基督為中心、卻沒有唯基督論的傾向（即以基督為所有神學的答案），相反他把所有基督教教義融合到基督教信仰中、讓人易於理解。這種神學的整合先由尼西亞信經的同本體論開始，解釋耶穌與上帝和聖靈本質（essence）相同、同在永恆當中，且因道成肉身在我們當中。後延伸至三一論、創造論、道成肉身、救恩、末世論、聖靈學、教會與聖禮和按立服事神學。他從普世派的三一神學開始研究 （此為天主教和東正教一致認同），解釋憑恩典稱義的概念，及此如何與為何和基督獨特的身分有關：他從神降生為人在充滿罪與邪惡的地上，又作為神人為眾人勝過罪惡、苦難、邪惡和死亡。這讓托倫斯的神學既有深度和意義，又充滿盼望和喜樂。因為耶穌不單是好生命的倫理典範，他也是神願意捨己作為人在地上受難、為眾人以無條件的愛釘在十架上，而他能作此正因為他道成肉身。托倫斯曾提及如果耶穌只是人類死在十架上，那麼基督教便是不道德的，因為此宗教展示一個殘忍的上帝要求人類以死奉獻才能得到衪喜悅。此將變成「因己稱義」。但當神在十架上整個畫象也變得不同了-因為神犧牲的愛證明了上帝不只讓人受苦、衪也願意讓衪的愛子承受，以至人類不會失去與上帝的團契。這一切也從基督的復活以及衪繼續在新天新地與教會同在，此群體因著信與望而與已升天的上帝及聖靈有聯繫，此也因著長期參與聖禮、在講道和傳講福音上有更深的認識。

神學與科學

托倫斯於1978年因著他對神學與科學的貢獻獲得鄧普頓獎。[9] 他的成就也讓神學家阿利斯特·麥格拉思（Alister McGrath）發現很多神學家對自然科學的形式和方法毫無認識，而開始寫這類研究。因此麥格拉思也形容托倫斯的寫作有「里程碑般的重要性」。[1] P·馬可·阿赫特邁爾（P. Mark Achtemeier）形容托倫斯在這領域的研究「相當有權威和非常有原創性」。[4] 克里斯托弗·凱薩（Christopher Kaiser）提到如果愛因斯坦被媒體譽為世紀人物，托倫斯也應因著他的科學角度被譽為世紀神學家。[4]托倫斯在他的舉世著作《神學的科學》中，強調神學與科學皆透過我們的思想明白我們以外的真實性、而不受我們的主觀經驗或知識影響我們理解客觀的真實性。神學與科學應為「同一戰線的盟友、視自己為內在的敵人，因自己取代了創造者的位置⋯⋯」（《神學的科學》，xiii）只要神學與科學仍在對話，托倫斯認為「我們無需逃避浪漫的自然主義」。因此，他認為我們應專注在神學與科學我對話，以至神學科學哲學與自然科學哲學同對話，因為此兩種方法同樣「以科學方法尋找他們的位置和各自的領域。」（《神學的科學》，xiii）他在他的《空間、時間和道成肉身》與《空間、時間和復活》談到兩種科學的聯繫，讓人認識到上帝如何在創造的時間與空間中作工，又如果肯定創造物的特質，包括它的墜落與復和。托倫斯曾支持约翰·费罗普勒斯（490-570）學派那非二元論和非一元論的神學與科學觀點，認為亞里士多德和新柏拉圖的思想無助神學與科學的討論。此兩派學說認為神只是一個不動者，而不是一個活的上帝、能自由穿梭於創造物中、而不受創造物限制。托倫斯認同愛因斯坦、詹姆斯·克拉克·馬克士威和邁克·波拉尼的學說，認為他們將想法與實況、經驗與理念連在一起，而不會將這些事情分開。他認為神學家需向此學習。他覺得這種統一的科學思想有助排除神學家偏向康德或笛卡兒的二元論。他的神學也按此途徑表述，尤其是他分析經文的方法。當形式與本質分開時，就如我們的想法與客觀的真實性分開，這將會令我們難於認識耶穌的本質，因為我們只認識到耶穌在他門徒前顯現的狀態以及這會讓任何人憑著他們的信仰來分析耶穌的本質。這也令人難以認識已復活的上帝。當形式與本質的連繫被切斷後，復活只會被人當作是一個神秘的想像來認識耶穌的死亡，而不會覺得這是一件特別的事 蹟而能從此事蹟來理解經文中形容他的人生與工作。

後世影響

托倫斯的科學神學幫助今日的基督教神學來理解揀選與上帝三為一體的關係，以及討論三為一體的上帝如何揀選我們、而不會影響他作為創造者、復和者與救贖者的本質與工作。托倫斯跟隨巴特的想法，同樣反對永生神的本質會因為衪在歷史與人類的關係而受影響。而這正是他神學的獨特之處。托倫斯比許多廿世紀的神學家更體會耶穌作為大祭司幫助人透過聖靈與天父聯繫。正是這種理解，托倫斯認為無人能取代耶穌作為人的位置-他作為已升天又已降臨的神，既有神性和人性，繼續存在、直至他第二次降臨，藉著他在地上的身體 （教會）、因信心與恩典聯合眾人。正如他的導師巴特一樣，他的神學包含了聖經的詮譯和對早期教父神學的理解，令他的神學能流行於各宗派。
