Still-frame from surveillance camera video footage that was gathered by the FBI. In a move that authorities later said "was a turning point in the investigation, no doubt about it",[1] they released this and similar photos to the media and asked for the public's help identifying the suspects. The following day, they were identified as Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

To significantly increase readers' understanding of an historic event; its omission would be detrimental to that understanding. Specifically, authorities later called the release of this and similar photos the "turning point" of the investigation.[1] More specifically, this image helps to clearly illustrate the size of the weapons, the manner in which the suspects casually strolled through the streets to deliver the weapons, their ability to "blend in" with the crowd so as to avoid suspicion, etc. A full understanding of the subtleties of nuance cannot be achieved through merely describing the scene through written text.
