แผ่นดินไหวที่ลิสบอน ค.ศ. 1755 หรือ แผ่นดินไหวครั้งใหญ่ที่ลิสบอน (โปรตุเกส: Terramoto de Lisboa) ส่งผลกระทบต่อโปรตุเกส คาบสมุทรไอบีเรีย และแอฟริกาตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือในตอนเช้าวันเสาร์ที่ 1 พฤศจิกายน เวลาประมาณ 9:40 นาฬิกา ตามเวลาท้องถิ่น[3] หลังจากเกิดแผ่นดินไหว ได้เกิดอัคคีภัยและคลื่นสึนามิตามมา ซึ่งทำลายกรุงลิสบอนและบริเวณใกล้เคียง นักวิทยาแผ่นดินไหวประเมินว่าแผ่นดินไหวลิสบอนคราวนี้มีขนาดประมาณ 7.7[4][5] หรือมากกว่านั้น[6] ตามมาตราขนาดโมเมนต์ โดยมีศูนย์กลางแผ่นดินไหวในมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก ห่างจากแหลมเซนต์วินเซนต์ไปทางตะวันตก-ตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ราว 200 กิโลเมตร

นี่ถือเป็นเหตุการณ์แผ่นดืนไหวขนาดใหญ่ครั้งที่สามที่ถูกนครนี้ (ก่อนหน้านี้เกิดขึ้นใน ค.ศ. 1321 และ 1531) ตัวเลขประเมินผู้เสียชีวิตเฉพาะในกรุงลิสบอนอยู่ระหว่าง 12,000[5] ถึง 50,000 คน[6] จึงนับเป็นหนึ่งในแผ่นดินไหวครั้งที่มีผู้เสียชีวิตมากที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์

แผ่นดินไหวดังกล่าวเน้นความตึงเครียดทางการเมืองในราชอาณาจักรโปรตุเกส และรบกวนความทะเยอทะยานด้านอาณานิคมในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 18 ของประเทศลงอย่างลึกซึ้ง เหตุการณ์ดังกล่าวถูกอภิปรายและพูดเขียนอธิบายอย่างกว้างขวางโดยนักปรัชญายุโรปยุคเรืองปัญญา และเป็นแรงบันดาลใจให้แก่พัฒนาการสำคัญในเทวยุติธรรม (theodicy) และในปรัชญาแห่งสุนทรียปรัชญา (sublime) เนื่องจากเป็นแผ่นดินไหวครั้งแรกที่มีการศึกษาทางวิทยาศาสตร์ถึงผลกระทบต่อพื้นที่อันกว้างใหญ่ จึงได้นำไปสู่การกำเนิดของวิทยาแผ่นดินไหวสมัยใหม่ และวิศวกรรมแผ่นดินไหว

เหตุการณ์

แผ่นดินไหวดังกล่าวเกิดขึ้นเมื่อเช้าวันที่ 1 พฤศจิกายน ค.ศ. 1755 ซึ่งเป็นวันสมโภชนักบุญทั้งหลาย (All Saints' Day) วันหยุดของนิกายคาทอลิก รายงานร่วมสมัยระบุว่าแผ่นดินไหวเกิดขึ้นนาน 3.5-6 นาที ทำให้เกิดรอยแรกขนาดใหญ่กว้าง 5 เมตรเกิดขึ้น ณ ใจกลางนคร ผู้รอดชีวิตต่างเร่งรุดไปยังพื้นที่เปิดของท่าเรือเพื่อความปลอดภัยและเฝ้ามองขณะที่น้ำลดต่ำลง ประมาณ 40 นาทีหลังเกิดแผ่นดินไหว คลื่นสึนามิขนาดยักษ์ได้พัดท่วมท่าเรือและเขตเมือง ไปจนถึงแม่น้ำทากัส[7] หลังจากนี้ยังมีคลื่นสึนามิอีกสองคลื่นเกิดขึ้นตามมา ในบางพื้นที่ เพลิงได้โหมลุกอย่างรวดเร็วและลุกไหม้นานถึงห้าวัน

แรงสั่นสะเทือนจากแผ่นดินไหวสามารถรู้สึกได้ทั่วทวีปยุโรป[8] ไกลถึงฟินแลนด์และแอฟริกาเหนือ และในบางแหล่งข้อมูล กระทั่งในกรีนแลนด์[9] และแคริบเบียน[10] คลื่นสึนามิสูงถึง 20 เมตรกวาดชายฝั่งแอฟริกาเหนือ และพัดถล่มมาร์ตินีกและบาร์เบโดสทั่วมหาสมุทรแอตแลนติก

ผลกระทบ

นักประวัติศาสตร์เศรษฐกิจ อัลวาโร เปเรรา ประเมินว่า จากประชากรของลิสบอนที่ประมาณ 200,000 คน มีผู้เสียชีวิตราว 30,000-40,000 คน และอีก 10,000 คนอาจเสียชีวิตในโมร็อกโก อย่างไรก็ดี การศึกษารายงานร่วมสมัยซึ่งเกี่ยวข้องกับเหตุการณ์แผ่นดินไหวครั้งนี้ใน ค.ศ. 2009 พบว่าตัวเลขนี้คลุมเครือ และยากที่จะแยกจากรายงานการเกิดแผ่นดินไหวท้องถิ่นในช่วงเวลาไล่เลี่ยกัน คือ 18-19 พฤศจิกายน[11] เปเรราประเมินว่ายอดผู้เสียชีวิตทั้งสิ้นในโปรตุเกส สเปนและโมร็อกโกจากแผ่นดินไหว ตลอดจนอัคคีภัยและคลื่นสึนามิที่เกิดตามมาอยู่ที่ 40,000 ถึง 50,000 คน[12]

ความพยายามสร้างนครใหม่

พระเจ้าโจเซที่ 1 พระมหากษัตริย์แห่งโปรตุเกส และเสนาบดี พยายามสร้างนครขึ้นใหม่ วันที่ 4 ธันวาคม ค.ศ. 1755 ประมาณหนึ่งเดือนให้หลังเหตุแผ่นดินไหว มานูเอล ดา แมร์ (Manuel da Maia) หัวหน้าวิศวกร นำเสนอแผนการของเขาสำหรับการสร้างกรุงลิสบอนขึ้นใหม่ แมร์เสนอห้าทางเลือกตั้งแต่ละทิ้งกรุงลิสบอนไปจนถึงสร้างนครใหม่ขึ้นอย่างสมบูรณ์ ซึ่งพระเจ้าโจเซและเสนาบดีตัดสินใจเลือกการรื้อถอนย่านไบซา (Baixa quarter) และ "สร้างถนนใหม่โดยไม่รีรอ"[13]
