ในเทพปกรณัมกรีก ทาร์ทารัส (อังกฤษ: Tartarus, /ˈtɑːrtərəs/; กรีกโบราณ: Τάρταρος, Tártaros)[1]ในเทพปกรณัมคลาสสิก เบื้องล่างของยูเรนัส ไกอาและพอนตัส ทาร์ทารัส หรือ ทาร์ทารอส (กรีกโบราณ: Τάρταρος แปลว่า "สถานที่ลึกไม่สิ้นสุด") เป็นห้วงที่มืดหม่นและมีความลึกไม่มีสิ้นสุด เป็นหลุมลึกขนาดใหญ่ที่ไร้ก้น ถูกใช้เป็นสถานที่คุกมืดสำหรับทรมานและทำให้ได้รับความเจ็บปวดแก่โครนอสซึ่งอยู่ใต้โลกบาดาลเป็นที่ที่ซุสใช้เคียวของโครนอสสับโครนอสผู้เป็นบิดาเป็นพันชิ้นแล้วโปรยลงไปในนรกทาร์ทารัสตามตำนานกรีก ในกอร์จิอัส ผลงานของเพลโต (ประมาณ 400 ปีก่อนคริสตกาล) ได้เขียนไว้ว่าเป็นเหวลึกที่ใช้เป็นคุกใต้ดินสำหรับทรมานและลงโทษคนทำชั่วและเป็นคุกสำหรับพวกไททัน สถานที่ใหญ่โตมโหฬารขนาดนี้ ไม่มีแสงใดๆส่องลงมาได้แน่นอน เหมาะแก่การกักขังยักษ์ และอสูรกายต่างๆได้เป็นอย่างดี เช่นเดียวกับสิ่งดั้งเดิมอื่นๆ ทาร์ทารัสเองก็เป็นอำนาจหรือเทพที่มีมาแต่ดั้งเดิม (primordial force) หรือเทพร่วมกับสิ่งที่เป็นรูปธรรมอื่น ๆ เช่นโลก, กลางคืน และเวลา

ใน Theogony (ป. ปลายศตวรรษที่ 8 ก่อนคริสต์ศักราช) ของเฮสิโอด นักกวีชาวกรีก ทาร์ทารัสเป็นเทพบรรพกาลที่เกิดคนที่สองต่อจากเทพีไกอา ref>Hesiod, Theogony 116–119; Gantz p. 3; Hard, p. 23.</ref> และเป็นบิดาของปีศาจไทฟอน[2] ส่วนHyginusรายงานว่า ทาร์ทารัสเป็นบุตรของAetherกับไกอา[3]

ที่ตั้ง

เฮสิโอสกล่าวถึงทาร์ทารัสในฐานะสถานที่ว่า ทั่งทองแดงที่ตกจากสวรรค์จะใช้เวลาเก้าวันก่อนถึงพื้นโลก และทั่งนั้นจะใช้เวลาอีกเก้าวันจากพื้นโลกถึงทาร์ทารัส[4] ในอีเลียด (ป. ศตวรรษที่ 8 ก่อนคริสต์ศักราช) ซุสกล่าวถึงทาร์ทารัสว่า "อยู่ใต้เฮดีส ซึ่งไกลพอ ๆ กับระยะห่างของสวรรค์เหนือโลก"[5] เช่นเดียวกันกับรายงานของApollodorusที่กล่าวถึงทาร์ทารัสไว้เป็น "สถานที่อันมืดมนในเฮดีสที่ไกลจากโลกพอ ๆ กับระยะห่างของโลกกับสวรรค์"[6]
