นฺหวี่เจิน (จีน: 女真) เป็นกลุ่มคนที่พูดภาษาตุงกูซิกในเอเชียตะวันออกสืบเชื้อสายมาจากชาวตงหู[3] อาศัยอยู่ในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของจีนหรือที่เรียกว่าแมนจูเรียก่อนศตวรรษที่ 18 หฺวัง ไท่จี๋ เปลี่ยนชื่อนฺหวี่เจินเป็นแมนจูในปี ค.ศ. 1635[4] กลุ่มชาวนฺหวี่เจินกลุ่มต่าง ๆ ใช้ชีวิตเป็นนักล่าสัตว์ คนเลี้ยงสัตว์กึ่งเร่ร่อน หรือเกษตรกร

ราชวงศ์หมิงจำแนกพวกเขาออกเป็น 3 กลุ่มซึ่งสะท้อนความใกล้ชิดกับหมิง:

1. เจี้ยนโจว นฺหวี่เจิน (จีน: 建州) นฺหวี่เจินบางส่วนผสมกับเกาหลีและจีนอาศัยอยู่ใกล้กับแม่น้ำมูดาน ภูเขาฉางไป่ และเหลียวตง พวกเขาได้ชื่อว่าตัดเย็บเสื้อผ้าได้คล้ายกับชาวจีน และดำรงชีวิตด้วยการล่าสัตว์และตกปลา ทำการเกษตร ค้าขายไข่มุกและโสม

ชาวนฺหวี่เจินส่วนใหญ่เป็นที่รู้จักจากบรรพบุรุษของราชวงศ์จินและราชวงศ์ชิงที่พิชิตดินแดนจีน ราชวงศ์หลังซึ่งแต่เดิมเรียกตัวเองว่าจินยุคหลัง ก่อตั้งโดยหนูเอ่อร์ฮาชื่อ ผู้บัญชาการของเจี้ยนโจว นฺหวี่เจิน ผู้ซึ่งรวบรวมชนเผ่านฺหวี่เจินส่วนใหญ่ให้เป็นปึกแผ่น รวมประชากรทั้งหมดของพวกเขาเข้ากับกองทหารที่สืบทอดกันมาซึ่งรู้จักกันในชื่อแปดกองธงและอุปถัมภ์การสร้างอักษรสำหรับภาษาของตนซึ่งอิงจากอักษรมองโกล ในปี ค.ศ. 1635 คำว่า แมนจู ถูกกำหนดให้เป็นชื่อเดียวสำหรับชนชาตินั้น
