The Community Affairs Committee (CAC) of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees invites you to give feedback on a draft Procedure for Sibling Project Lifecycle. This draft Procedure outlines proposed steps and requirements for opening and closing Wikimedia Sibling Projects, and aims to ensure any newly approved projects are set up for success. This is separate from the procedures for opening or closing language versions of projects, which is handled by the Language Committee or closing projects policy.

The Appearance menu and new default standard font size will be available for logged-out users

Hi everyone! We are the Wikimedia Foundation Web team. We work on making it easier to read Wikimedia projects as part of the objective "Reading and media experience" of the current year’s annual plan. To achieve this goal, we have introduced the "Accessibility for Reading" beta feature. It adds a menu which works on the Vector 2022 skin and allows logged-in users to choose different font sizes and color schemes based on individual needs.

The menu introduces a new Standard font setting. It slightly increases the size and height of the font. It was selected based on multiple sources. You will find more information on this in the section "About the new Standard font setting".

What will change

  • We are now ready to make the new Appearance menu available for logged-out and logged-in users.
  • At the same time, we will also make the Standard option the new default for logged-out users only.
  • If no breaking technical issues are found, we plan on making this change within the next two weeks.
  • Later, this menu will also include the option to select dark mode, which for the time being will remain a beta feature. For more information, check out our project page.

About the menu

The new menu will allow logged-in and logged-out users to set preferences for:

  1. Text size and line height (available now as a beta feature): Users will be able to choose between the Small (current default), Standard (recommended for better accessibility), and Large options. Selecting an option will change both the font size and line height of the text.
  2. Dark mode (available now as a beta feature): Users will be able to choose to see the site in night mode on a permanent basis, or select an "automatic" setting which will set day or night mode based on the device or browser preferences.
  3. Content width (previously available as a toggle button): We have moved the content width toggle from an icon at the bottom of the page to a labeled radio button in the new menu. It will work exactly the same as the toggle. The previous toggle button will no longer be available.

This menu has been tested as a beta feature by logged-in users across wikis as well as in user testing with readers. Based on the findings of these tests, we changed the menu to improve discoverability and ease of use, and to accommodate gadget compatibility.

The menu will appear to the right of the page, immediately under the Tools menu if that has been pinned. Unlike the Tools menu, the Appearance menu is pinned by default, but can be unpinned. Once unpinned, it collapses under an icon at the top of the page.

About the new Standard font setting

The "Small" option is the current default. We will be changing this default to "Standard" for logged-out users, while keeping "Small" as the default for logged-in users. The "Standard" and "Large" options were built and tested based on the following:

  • Academic studies and recommendations for the best average font size for the majority of readers. These recommendations stated that our current size is too small for the majority of people to read comfortably. This means that on average, people read more slowly, strain their eyes while reading, or have difficulty clearly seeing the text. Increasing the font size by default improves these issues for all users, including users who might not have sufficient time to spend adjusting a setting via the appearance menu or browser. Information density is also important, which is why we wanted to increase font size without sacrificing information density. We have achieved this by changing not only font size, but also line height and paragraph spacing.
  • Designs submitted by more than 630 Wikipedians from across 13 wikis of different languages, scripts, and sizes. The majority (~450) of these users opted for a font size that was larger than the default. "Standard" represents the average of the most popular cluster of responses (15-20 pixels). "Large" represents the need for an even larger option, as represented by the cluster of sizes between 21-26 pixels. You can read more on how we included volunteers in the process and landed on these options.
  • Beta feature usage showed that the majority of users who interact with the feature at least once opt for a font size that is larger than the current default.

Our works so far and next steps

Logged-in users will remain with the "small" setting for the time being as their default, but can change to any other setting at any time. In a few months, we will study how many logged-in users switch to standard and start a conversation on whether it makes sense for logged-in users to make the switch as well. From the early data from the beta feature, 55% of sessions who interacted with the feature chose to use a setting that was standard or larger.

  1. Please, turn on the beta feature ("Accessibility for Reading (Vector 2022)")
  2. Try out the new menu. Is anything confusing? Do you understand all the labels and how the menu works?
  3. Try out the small, standard, and large sizes, the color schemes, and the width toggle. Reach out to us if you notice any bugs, or have questions or concerns.

Invitation to participate in the #WPWPCampaign 2024

Dear community members,

We are inviting you to participate in the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2024 campaign, a global contest scheduled to run from July through August 2024:

Participants will choose among Wikipedia pages without photo images, then add a suitable file from among the many thousands of photos in the Wikimedia Commons, especially those uploaded from thematic contests (Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc.) over the years.

In its first year (2020), 36 Wikimedia communities in 27 countries joined the campaign. Events relating to the campaign included training organized by at least 18 Wikimedia communities in 14 countries.

The campaign resulted in the addition of media files (photos, audios and videos) to more than 90,000 Wikipedia articles in 272 languages.

Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) offers an ideal task for recruiting and guiding new editors through the steps of adding content to existing pages. Besides individual participation, the WPWP campaign can be used by user groups and chapters to organize editing workshops and edit-a-thons.

The Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) is a global group dedicated to providing an equitable and consistent implementation of the UCoC. In this special election, according to chapter 2 of the U4C charter, there are 9 seats available on the U4C: four community-at-large seats and five regional seats to ensure the U4C represents the diversity of the movement. After carefully tallying both individual and affiliate votes, the Charter Electoral Commission is pleased to announce the final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter voting.  

As communicated by the Charter Electoral Commission, we reached the quorum for both Affiliate and individual votes by the time the vote closed on July 9, 23:59 UTC. We thank all 2,451 individuals and 129 Affiliate representatives who voted in the ratification process. Your votes and comments are invaluable for the future steps in Movement Strategy.

The final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter ratification voting held between 25 June and 9 July 2024 are as follows:

Individual vote:

Out of 2,451 individuals who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 2,446 have been accepted as valid votes. Among these, 1,710 voted “yes”; 623 voted “no”; and 113 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 73.30% voted to approve the Charter (1710/2333), while 26.70% voted to reject the Charter (623/2333).

Affiliates vote:

Out of 129 Affiliates designated voters who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 129 votes are confirmed as valid votes. Among these, 93 voted “yes”; 18 voted “no”; and 18 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 83.78% voted to approve the Charter (93/111), while 16.22% voted to reject the Charter (18/111).

Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation:

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees voted not to ratify the proposed Charter during their special Board meeting on July 8, 2024. The Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, Nataliia Tymkiv, shared the result of the vote, the resolution, meeting minutes and proposed next steps.  

With this, the Wikimedia Movement Charter in its current revision is not ratified.

Preliminary results of the 2024 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees elections

Hello all,

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2024 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election. Close to 6000 community members from more than 180 wiki projects have voted.

The following four candidates were the most voted:

  1. Christel Steigenberger
  2. Maciej Artur Nadzikiewicz
  3. Victoria Doronina
  4. Lorenzo Losa

While these candidates have been ranked through the vote, they still need to be appointed to the Board of Trustees. They need to pass a successful background check and meet the qualifications outlined in the Bylaws. New trustees will be appointed at the next Board meeting in December 2024.

Nový projekt: Slovak Comprehensive Music Database

Ahojte som rád, že vám môžem predstaviť nový projekt, ktorý sa týka Slovenskej Wikipédie a Wikidát: Slovak Comprehensive Music Database. Cieľom projektu je zlepšiť viditeľnosť slovenských hudobných umelcov na týchto dvoch projektoch. Počiatočným impulzom boli okrem iného štúdie o nevyplácaní honorárov za hudbu kvôli (meta)dátam, ktoré chýbali v databázach ako sú Wikidáta a z ktorých čerpajú informácie služby typu Spotify. Z rovnakého dôvodu sú slovenskí hudobní umelci v menšej miere doporučovaní poslucháčom hľadajúcich tento lokálny typ hudby. Technické riešenie projektu bude zabezpečovať holandská spoločnosť Reprex. Zo slovenských organizácií je zapojený Slovenský ochranný zväz autorský pre práva k hudobným dielam a Hudobné centrum. Súčasťou projektu bude aj historicky prvá pozícia rezidenčného wikimediána (wikimedian-in-residence). Túto pozíciu som začal vykonávať túto jeseň.

V prebiehajúcej prvej časti projektu bude vybudovaná databáza na základe existujúcich databáz: čiastočne verejnej databázy Hudobného centra a neverejnej databázy SOZA. Dáta v novej databáze budú skontrolované, upravené a pripravené na zverejnenie na Wikidáta. Zverejnením sa prepoja obe databázy a dáta budú môcť prúdiť oboma smermi, databázy sa budú vzájomne obohacovať a aktualizovať. Druhá časť projektu bude súvisieť s Wikipédiou. Hudobné centrum má vlastnú encyklopédiu hudobných tvorcov, telies, diel a organizácií. Túto encyklopédiu bude tiež možné prepojiť s Wikipédiou jednak cez Wikidáta linkovacou šablónou alebo aj importom častí existujúceho textu. Podrobnosti tejto časti sú ešte v štádiu príprav. Kedže dáta o slovenských hudobných umelcoch, organizáciách a telesách na Wikidátach budú vďaka projektu obsahovo širšie, aktuálnejšie a dôveryhodnejšie, bude ich možné okrem iného využiť aj na prípravu nových článkov. Možnosťou je aj pridanie článkov v iných jazykoch. Ďalšou pridanou hodnotou je zatiaľ otvorená možnosť spracovania infoboxov pre osobnosti tak, aby bolo možné dáta preberať z Wikidát. Hello everyone, I previously wrote on the 27th September to advise that the Wikidata item sitelink will change places in the sidebar menu, moving from the General section into the In Other Projects section. The scheduled rollout date of 04.10.2024 was delayed due to a necessary request for Mobile/MinervaNeue skin. I am happy to inform that the global rollout can now proceed and will occur later today, 22.10.2024 at 15:00 UTC-2. Please let us know if you notice any problems or bugs after this change. CampaignEvents extension and the upcoming CEE Hub Office Hour

Some of you have already been in contact with the Event Registration tool, that we are using for our monthly Office Hours. As this tool is part of the wider CampaignEvents extension, we would dedicate our upcoming monthly Office Hour to this topic and during the call will be present as well Benedict Nnaemeka Udeh, who will have a short demo about this extension and will answer your questions.

The Office Hour will be held on 18th of November (Monday) at 17:00 CET. All the details about local time and how to register yourself are available on our Meta page.

In the meantime, you can check this Meta page about the extension, where you can find all the details about three key functionalities:

  • Event Registration tool, allows campaign organizers to manage event registrations directly on the wiki. You can find instructions on how to use it here.
  • Event list, global, automated list of events on the wikis. It can be accessed by going to SpecialːAllEvents.
  • Invitation list, finding past contributors on the selected articles, that can be useful to be invited in the upcoming edit-a-thons, contests, campaigns, etc. You can view this video to see how it works.

You can find information on how this extension can be deployed on your Wikipedia here, which requires community discussion and consensus.

This participant-driven meeting will be organized by the Wikimedia Foundation’s Language Product Localization team and the Language Diversity Hub. There will be presentations on topics like developing language keyboards, the creation of the Moore Wikipedia, and the language support track at Wiki Indaba. We will also have members from the Wayuunaiki community joining us to share their experiences with the Incubator and as a new community within our movement. This meeting will have a Spanish interpretation.
