G.C.E. (General Certificate of Education) Ordinary Level (Sri Lanka)

(General Certificate of Education) Ordinary Level Examination is a government exam held by the Examination Department in Sri Lanka for 16 years old students (and higher) who study in all the government schools in grade 11, as a basic qualification to face the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination. Some also apply for this examination as private candidates due to several reasons (eg: for job qualifications) But the students who are 16 years old and below 16 years old cannot apply as private candidates. Some students sit for G.C.E. O/L Examination more than one time in order to pass several subjects. G.C.E. O/L Examination is normally held in the month of December. Passing this examination was a must to sit for G.C.E. A/L Examination. This examination consist of 6 main subjects along with three optional subjects which can be selected according to the candidates’ wish and all together 9 subjects. The 6 main subjects are as below, 1. Religions (Buddhism / Catholicism / Christianity / Islam) 2. Sinhala Language OR Tamil Language 3. History 4. Science 5. Mathematics 6. English The above 06 subjects are compulsory. The optional subjects are categorized in to three categories. ONLY ONE SUBJECT SHOULD BE SELECTED FROM ONE CATEGORY. They are as below, (1st Category) Business & Accounting Studies Geography Civic Education Entrepreneurship Studies Second Language (Sinhala) Second Language (Tamil) Pali Sanskrit French German Hindi Japanese Arabic Korean Chinese Russian ONE subject can be selected from the above 1st Category. (2nd Category) Oriental Music Western Music Carnatic Music Oriental Dancing Bharatha Dancing Art Appreciation of English Literary Texts (ඉංග්‍රීසි සාහිත්‍ය රසාස්වාදය) (Short Name: English Literature) Appreciation of Sinhala Literary Texts (සිංහල සාහිත්‍ය රසාස්වාදය) (Short Name: Sinhala Literature) Appreciation of Tamil Literary Texts (දෙමල සාහිත්‍ය රසාස්වාදය) (Short Name: Tamil Literature) Appreciation of Arabic Literary Texts (අරාබි සාහිත්‍ය රසාස්වාදය) (Short Name: Arabic Literature) Drama and Theatre ONE subject can be selected from the above 2nd Category. VERY IMPORTANT:
That means,you have to face the exam paper as well as the practical test. In the practical test, you have to show your talent in front of the examiners. For an example, if you select Drama and Theatre, you have to act something in front of examiners and you have to sing a dramatic song also. Therefore, if you shy enough and hesitate to do so, DO NOT SELECT THESE SUBJECTS.
If you shy or do not like to do practicals, you can select ONE literature subject from the second category (basket).If you have English knowledge, select English Literature since English literature is the most valuable subject available in this category. OR if you don't like English Literature, Select Sinhala Literature from the second category. (3rd Category) Information & Communication Technology Agriculture & Food Technology Aquatic Bioresources Technology Arts & Crafts Home Economics Health & Physical Education Communication & Media Studies Design & Construction Technology Design & Mechanical Technology Design, Electrical & Electronic Technology Electronic Writing & Shorthand (ONE subject should be selected from the above 3rd category). All the above mentioned subjects are not available in each and every government school due to lack of teachers. The grades for the above subjects are normally graded as below, Marks between Grade 100-75 A 74-65 B 64-50 C 49-35 S below 35 W Candidates who attain a grade of ‘W’ are considered failed to that particular subject. Sometimes these mark levels are changed due to some reasons. Candidates must prove their identity before sitting for this exam by the national identity card or by the postal identity card and a number of advices are given to the candidates who write for G.C.E. O/L in schools by the authorities. Use of calculators, correcting fluid and any electronic device including mobile phones for any subject in this examination is not allowed and therefore it is a punishable offence even to bring them in to the examination hall. Ten candidates who performed well in this examination are selected and announced on the release date of results. They are selected by the total marks of the main 6 subjects that a candidate attains. Marks of the optional subject are not considered in this purpose. As per now (from 2017 onwards) March 28th has been announced as the release date of the result in each year by the Minister of Education. සිංහල පරිවර්තනය Short Sinhala Translation is mentioned as eveybody doesn't know English: O/L සදහා ප්‍රදාන අනිවාර්ය විෂයන් 06 ක් ඇති අතර ඒවා Follow කිරීම අනිවාර්ය වේ. එම අනිවාර්ය විෂයන් නම්, 1. ආගම 2. ඉතිහාසය 3. විද්‍යව 4. සිංහල හෝ දෙමළ භාෂාව (මව් භාෂාව) 5. ගණිතය 6. ඉංග්‍රීසි (English Language) අනෙකුත් විෂයන්, විෂයන් කාන්ඩ තුනකට බෙදා ඇති අතර, එම එක් විෂය කාන්ඩයකින්, එක විෂය බැගින් තෝරා ගත යුතුය. 1 වන විෂය කාණ්ඩය Business & Accounting Studies (ව්‍යාපාර හා ගිනුම්කරණ අධ්‍යයනය) Geography Civic Education Entrepreneurship Studies (විවසායකත්ව අධ්‍යයනය) Second Language (Sinhala) Second Language (Tamil) Pali Sanskrit French German Hindi Japanese Arabic Korean Chinese Russian (ඉහත දැක්වූ පළමු විෂය කාන්ඩයෙන් එක් විෂයයක් තෝරා ගත යුතුය.)

Texts (ඉංග්‍රීසි සාහිත්‍ය රසාස්වාදය) (කෙටි නම: ඉංග්‍රීසි සාහිත්‍ය) , Appreciation of Sinhala Literary Texts (සිංහල සාහිත්‍ය රසාස්වාදය) (කෙටි නම: සිංහල සාහිත්‍ය), Appreciation of Tamil Literary Texts (දෙමළ සාහිත්‍ය රසාස්වාදය) (කෙටි නම: දෙමළ සාහිත්‍ය), Appreciation of Arabic Literary Texts (අරාබි සාහිත්‍ය රසාස්වාදය) (කෙටි නම: අරාබි සාහිත්‍ය) යන සාහිත්‍ය විෂයන් වල කිසිදු ප්‍රායෝගික පරික්ෂණයක් නොමැත. ඒවායේ විචාර (Long Essays) ලිවිම පමණක් ඇත. ප්‍රායෝගික පරික්ෂණ වලදී පරික්ෂකවරයා ඉදිරියේ තම හැකියාව පෙන්විය යුතුය. එනම්, කෙනෙක් නාට්‍ය හා රංග කලාව තොරා ගන්නේ නම්, රංගනයක් ඉදිරිපත් කර පෙන්විම, නාට්‍ය ගිත ගායනා කර පෙන්විම කිරිමට සිදු වේ.නමුත් කෙනෙක් සාහිත්‍ය විෂයක් තෝරා ගන්නේ නම් ප්‍රායෝගික පරීක්ෂණයක් නොමැති බැවින් එය තරමක් පහසු වේ. ඉංග්‍රීසි කුඩා දැනුමක් හෝ ඇත්නම් වටිනාම the most valuable subject එක වන්නේ ඉංග්‍රීසි සාහිත්‍යයි. නමුත් ඉංග්‍රීසි දැනුමක් නොමැති නම්, සිංහල සාහිත්‍ය දෙවන විෂය කාණ්ඩයෙන් තෝරා ගත හැකිය. 3 වන විෂය කාණ්ඩය Information & Communication Technology (තොරතුරු තාක්ෂණය) Agriculture & Food Technology (කෘෂිකර්මය) Aquatic Bioresources Technology Arts & Crafts Home Economics Health & Physical Education (සෞඛ්‍යය) Communication & Media Studies Design & Construction Technology Design & Mechanical Technology Design, Electrical & Electronic Technology Electronic Writing & Shorthand ඉහත දැක්වූ 3 වන විෂය කාන්ඩයෙන් එක් විෂයක් තෝරා ගත යුතුය.) |
