വടക്കുകിഴക്കൻ അമേരിക്കൻ ഐക്യനാടുകളിലെ ആറ് സംസ്ഥാനങ്ങൾ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു മേഖലയാണ് ന്യൂ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ട്. കണക്റ്റിക്കട്ട്, മെയ്ൻ, മസാച്യുസെറ്റ്സ്, ന്യൂ ഹാംഷെയർ, റോഡ് ഐലൻഡ്, വെർമോണ്ട് എന്നിവ ഇതിൽ ഉൾപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ഈ മേഖലയുടെ പടിഞ്ഞാറ് ന്യൂയോർക്ക് സംസ്ഥാനവും വടക്ക് കിഴക്ക് ന്യൂ ബ്രൺസ്വിക്ക്, വടക്ക് ക്യൂബെക്ക് എന്നീ കനേഡിയൻ പ്രവിശ്യകളും അതിർത്തികളാണ്. കിഴക്കും തെക്കുകിഴക്കും അറ്റ്ലാന്റിക് മഹാസമുദ്രവും തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറ് ലോംഗ് ഐലന്റ് സൗണ്ടുമാണ് അതിരുകൾ. ന്യൂ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നഗരവും മസാച്ചുസെറ്റ്സിന്റെ തലസ്ഥാനവുമാണ് ബോസ്റ്റൺ. ന്യൂ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ ജനസംഖ്യയുടെ മൂന്നിലൊന്ന് പാർക്കുന്ന ഗ്രേറ്റർ ബോസ്റ്റൺ ആണ് ഏറ്റവും വലിയ മെട്രോപൊളിറ്റൻ പ്രദേശം. ഈ മേഖലയിൽ വോർസെസ്റ്റർ, മസാച്യുസെറ്റ്സ് (ന്യൂ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ വലിയ നഗരം), മാഞ്ചസ്റ്റർ, (ന്യൂ ഹാംഷെയറിലെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നഗരം), പ്രൊവിഡൻസ് (റോഡ് ഐലൻഡിലെ തലസ്ഥാനവും ഏറ്റവും വലിയ നഗരവും) എന്നിവയും ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.

ചരിത്രം

പലതരം കിഴക്കൻ അൽഗോങ്കിയൻ ഭാഷകൾ സംസാരിക്കുന്ന അമേരിക്കൻ ഇന്ത്യക്കാരാണ് ന്യൂ ഇംഗ്ലണ്ടിലെ ആദ്യകാല നിവാസികൾ.[3] പ്രമുഖ ഇന്ത്യൻ ഗോത്രങ്ങളിൽ അബെനാകികൾ, മിക്മാക്, പെനോബ്സ്കോട്ട്, പെക്വോട്ട്സ്, മൊഹെഗാൻസ്, നരഗാൻസെറ്റ്സ്, പോക്കംടക്സ്, വാമ്പനോഗ് എന്നിവ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു.[4] യൂറോപ്യൻ കോളനിവാസികളുടെ വരവിനു മുമ്പ്, പടിഞ്ഞാറൻ അബെനാകികൾ ആധുനിക ന്യൂ ഹാംഷെയർ, ന്യൂയോർക്ക്, വെർമോണ്ട് എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലും ക്യൂബെക്ക്, വെസ്റ്റേൺ മെയ്ൻ എന്നിവയുടെ ഭാഗങ്ങളിലും അധിവസിച്ചിരുന്നു.[5] ഇന്നത്തെ മെയിനിലെ നോറിഡ്ജ്വോക്ക് ആയിരുന്നു അവരുടെ പ്രധാന നഗരം.[6]
