1766-ൽ പ്രകൃതിചരിത്രത്തിൻറെ ഭാഗമായി ന്യൂഫൗണ്ട്ലാൻഡ്, ലാബ്രഡോർ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലേക്ക് ബാങ്ക്സ് പര്യവേക്ഷണം നടത്തുകയുണ്ടായി. ക്യാപ്റ്റൻ ജെയിംസ് കുക്കിന്റെ ആദ്യത്തെ കപ്പൽയാത്രയിൽ (1768-1771) അദ്ദേഹത്തോടൊപ്പം ബാങ്ക്സ് ബ്രസീൽ, താഹിതി, എന്നീ പ്രദേശങ്ങൾ സന്ദർശിക്കുകയും 6 മാസങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം ഓസ്ട്രേലിയയിലെ ന്യൂസീലൻഡിൽ മടങ്ങിയെത്തുമ്പോഴേയ്ക്കും ഉടനടി അദ്ദേഹം പ്രശസ്തിയിലേക്ക് എത്തുകയും ചെയ്തു. 41 വർഷത്തിലധികമായി അദ്ദേഹം റോയൽ സൊസൈറ്റി പ്രസിഡന്റ് പദവി വഹിച്ചിരുന്നു. ക്യൂവിലെ റോയൽ ബൊട്ടാണിക് ഗാർഡനിൽ കിങ് ജോർജ്ജ് മൂന്നാമൻറെ ഉപദേഷ്ടാവായിരുന്നുകൊണ്ട് സസ്യശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞരെ ലോകമെമ്പാടും അയച്ച് സസ്യശേഖരണം നടത്തുകയും ക്യൂഗാർഡനെ ലോകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും മികച്ച ബൊട്ടാണിക്കൽ ഗാർഡനാക്കി ഒരുക്കിയെടുക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. 30,000 സസ്യങ്ങൾ ഗാർഡനിലേയ്ക്കായി അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻറെ വീട്ടിൽ നിന്ന് കൊണ്ടുവന്നതിൻറെ പേരിൽ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന് ബഹുമതി നൽകിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതിൽ 1,400 സസ്യങ്ങൾ അദ്ദേഹം തന്നെ കണ്ടെത്തിയതാണെന്ന ബഹുമതിയുമുണ്ട്.^[2]

Banks എന്നാണ് സസ്യശാസ്ത്രസംബന്ധിയായ കാര്യങ്ങളിൽ ഇദ്ദേഹത്തെ പരാമർശിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന ചുരുക്കെഴുത്ത്.^[3]
