തുർക്കിക് ഭാഷാകുടുംബത്തിൽപ്പെട്ടതും തെക്കുപടിഞ്ഞാറൻ ഏഷ്യയിൽ അസർബൈജാനി ജനത സംസാരിക്കുന്നതുമായ ഭാഷ അസർബൈജാനി എന്നും അസറി (Azərbaycanca, Azərbaycan dili) എന്നും അറിയപ്പെടുന്നു. അസർബൈജാൻ റിപ്പബ്ലിക്കിലും (90 ലക്ഷം ആൾക്കാർ[3]), ഇറാനിലും (120 [4] to 15.5[5] ലക്ഷം ആൾക്കാർ) ജോർജ്ജിയയിലും, റഷ്യയിലും, തുർക്കിയിലും അസർബൈജാനി ജനത അധിവസിക്കുന്ന മറ്റു രാജ്യങ്ങളിലുമാണ് (60 ലക്ഷം ആൾക്കാർ[6]) ഈ ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. ടർക്കിക് ഭാഷകളുടെ ഓഘുസ് ശാഖയിൽ പെട്ട ഭാഷയാണ് ഇത്. ടർക്കിഷ്, ക്വറേഷി, ടർക്ക്മെൻ, ക്രിമിയൻ ടാടർ എന്നീ ഭാഷകളുമായി ഇതിന് അടുത്ത ബന്ധമുണ്ട്. ടർക്കിഷ്, അസർബൈജാനി എന്നീ ഭാഷകൾക്ക് അടുത്ത സാമ്യമുണ്ട്. ഇതിൽ ഒരു ഭാഷ സംസാരിക്കുന്നയാൾക്ക് മറുഭാഷ മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ സാധിക്കും. അസർബൈജാനി സംസാരിക്കുന്നയാൾക്ക് ടർക്കിഷ് മനസ്സിലാക്കാനാണ് ഇതിൽ കൂടുതൽ എളുപ്പം.[7]^[not in citation given]
