16:9（1.77:1）は、幅16、高さ9のワイドスクリーンアスペクト比である。

かつて16:9のアスペクト比はエキゾチックであると見なされていた^[1]。

日本のハイビジョン（Hi-Vision）は当初5:3（1.67:1）の比率で始まったが、国際規格グループが16対9のより広い比率を導入したときに規格変更している。

2009年以降は、テレビやコンピュータモニターで最も一般的なアスペクト比になり、デジタルテレビハイビジョンフルHDおよびSDテレビの国際標準フォーマットでもある。フルスクリーン（4:3）のアスペクト比に取って代わった。

16:9（1.77:1）（16×9または16から9と言われる）は、HDTV、非HDデジタルテレビおよびアナログワイドスクリーンテレビPALplusの国際標準フォーマット。多くのデジタルビデオカメラには16:9で記録する機能があり、16:9はDVD規格でネイティブにサポートされている唯一のワイドスクリーンアスペクト比である。 DVDプロデューサーは、画像自体にハードマットまたは黒いバーを追加することにより、16:9 DVDフレーム内に1.85:1や2.4:1などのさらに広い比率を表示することもできる。

歴史

高解像度電子制作に関するSMPTEワーキンググループのメンバーであるカーンズH.パワーズ博士は、1984年に16:9（1.77:1）のアスペクト比を最初に提案した^[2]。1980年の主なワイドスクリーンは、4:3（当時のテレビ規格の比率に基づく）、15:9（ヨーロッパの「フラット」1.66:1の比率）、1.85:1（アメリカの「フラット」の比率）、および2.35:1（シネマスコープ / Panavision）アナモルフィックワイドスクリーン比率であった。

Powersは、一般的なアスペクト比のそれぞれに一致するように形作られた、等しい面積の長方形を切り取る。中心点を揃えて重ねると、これらのアスペクト比の長方形はすべて、アスペクト比が1.77:1の外側の長方形内に収まり、同じアスペクト比の1.78:1の小さな共通の内側の長方形もすべてカバーしていることがわかった^[3]。Powersによって検出された値は、極端なアスペクト比の幾何平均である、4:3および2.35:1、√47/15≈1.77:1は偶然に16:9に近かった。同じ幾何平均手法を16:9と4:3に適用すると、アスペクト比は約1.5396:1になり、14:9のアスペクト比（英語版）（1.55:1）に概算されることもある。これは、これらの比率間の妥協点としても使用される。

16:9（1.77:1）が最初に妥協形式として選択されたが、その後のHDTV放送で最も一般的なビデオアスペクト比として16:9が採用された^[4]。ほとんどの4:3（1.33:1）および2.4:1ビデオは、「シュートアンドプロテクト」技術を使用して記録されるようになった^[5]。これにより、メインアクションが16:9（1.77:1）の内側の長方形内に保持され、HDブロードキャストが容易になった。

逆に、センターカットと呼ばれる手法を使用して、HDと従来の4:3の両方の視聴者に、どちらの視聴者の画像サイズも妥協することなく、マテリアルショット（通常は16:9）を同時に提示するという課題に取り組むことは非常に一般的である。コンテンツ作成者は、重要なコンテンツまたはグラフィックを1.33:1のラスタースペースに収まるようにフレーム化する。これは、オープンマット（英語版）と呼ばれる撮影技法と類似している。

1990年代初頭の最初の16:9アクションプランの後、欧州連合は新たな16:9アクションプランを制定した^[6]。PALと HDの両方で、16:9のアスペクト比で高度なテレビサービスの開発を加速するためである。16:9アクションプランのコミュニティ基金は2億2800万ユーロに達した。

2000年代後半から2010年代初頭にかけて、コンピューター業界はモニターとラップトップの最も一般的なアスペクト比として4:3から16:9に切替を行った。DisplaySearchによる2008年のレポートでは、PCおよびモニターのメーカーが、より広い画面とより高い解像度の製品を提供することで製品範囲を拡大し、消費者がそのような製品をより簡単に採用できるようにするなど、「ノートPCおよびLCDモニター市場の成長を刺激する」多くの変化の理由を挙げている^[7]。テレビとモニターの両方に同じアスペクト比を使用することで、2つの別々の機器セットを必要とせずに製造を合理化し、研究コストを削減。また、16:9は、同じ長さの16:10パネルよりも狭いため、より多くのパネルを使用でき、ガラスのシートごとに製作することができる^[8]^[9]^[10]。

2011年、サムスン・南アフリカのIT製品の製品マネージャーであるベニー・バドラーは、1920×1200の解像度が可能なモニターはもはや製造されていないことを確認し、「製造コストを削減することがすべてで、新しい16:9アスペクト比のパネルは、以前の16:10パネルよりもローカルで製造する方が費用効果が高くなる」とバトラーは語っている^[11]。

2011年3月、解像度1920×1080（16:9）がSteamのユーザーの間で最も一般的に使用される解像度になった。以前は一般的な解像度は1680×1050（16:10）であった^[12]。

特性

16:9は、DVD形式でネイティブにサポートされている唯一のワイドスクリーンアスペクト比である。アナモルフィックワイドスクリーン（英語版）DVD転送は、情報を5:4（PAL）または3:2（NTSC）の正方形ピクセルとして保存する。これは、テレビまたはビデオプレーヤーが処理する16:9または4:3に拡張するように設定されている。フルフレーム画像のPALDVDには、768×576（4:3の比率）のビデオ解像度が含まれている場合があるが、ビデオプレーヤーソフトウェアは、正しいアスペクト比を再現するために、これを16:9フラグ付きの1024×576平方ピクセルに引き伸ばしている。
