欺瞞的同根語

欺瞞的同根語（ぎまんてきどうこんご、英語：false cognate、「見かけ（偽）の同根語」の意味）とは、発音や意味が似ているため一見すると同根語に見えるが、実際には語源が異なる単語のペアを指す。ペアが存在するのは同一言語内のケースもあれば、異なる言語間のケースもあり、さらに、同じ語族内のケースもある[1]。例えば、英語のdogとムババラム語（en:Mbabaram、オーストラリアのアボリジニーの言語）のdogは意味が同じ（「犬」）で、発音もそっくりだが、実際には偶然の一致でそうなったにすぎないケースである。同様に、英語のmuchとスペイン語のmuchoも意味が似ているものの、それぞれインド・ヨーロッパ祖語の異なる単語に由来するものである。これに対し、「見かけ（偽）の友達」（英語：false friend、空似言葉）は、つづりや発音が似ていて、語源的なつながりもあるが、意味が異なるペアを指す。

現象

「欺瞞的同根語」(false cognate)は「空似言葉」(false friend)と混同されやすい[1][2]。「空似言葉」は、異なる言語（や方言）間で語形が似ている二つの単語で、意味が異なるケースを指す。「空似言葉」が「欺瞞的同根語」であるケースもあるものの、多くの場合、「空似言葉」は語源を同じくする「真の同根語」である[2]。例えば、英語のpretend（「ふりをする」）とフランス語のprétendre（「言い張る」）は意味が異なるため「空似言葉」ではあるが、「欺瞞的同根語」ではなく、語源を同じくする「真の同根語」である[3]。

「ママ・パパ」

諸言語に共通する血縁関係の基層語彙であるmamaとpapaは欺瞞的同根語の中でも特殊なケースとなっている[4][5][6][7]。
