ベン・エドウィン・ペリー

ベン・エドウィン・ペリー（Ben Edwin Perry、1892年2月21日 - 1968年11月1日[1]）は、アメリカ合衆国の西洋古典学者。

経歴

1892年2月21日、オハイオ州フルトン郡ファイエット村（Fayette）に生まれる。父Edwin Stuart Perryは金物屋。母はDelle Wickizer。

ミシガン大学に学ぶ。同大学より1915年に学士、1916年に修士を授与される。1919年、プリンストン大学より博士を授与される。第一次世界大戦のため従軍の後、教育のキャリア開始。1919年から1920年、Urbana (Ohio) University School、1920年から1922年、ダートマス大学、1922年から1924年、ウェスタン・リザーブ大学（現・ケース・ウェスタン・リザーブ大学）でラテン語を教える[1]。

1924年、イリノイ大学西洋古典学科に就職、以後36年間ここに勤務する（1928年助教授、1941年教授）。同僚にWilliam Abbott Oldfatherがいた[2]。

1960年、教員を引退するが、1967年にミシガン大学客員教授を務める[1]。

主な研究対象は古代の寓話と、当時としては珍しいジャンルであった古代の小説。著書Aesopica, a Series of Texts Relating to Aesop Or Ascribed to Him Or Closely Connected with the Literary Tradition that Bears His Nameではアイソーポス（イソップ）の寓話を、その初出文献に基づいて整序した。その索引番号はペリー・インデックスと呼ばれ研究目的に広く使用されている[3]。

グッゲンハイム・フェロー（1930年 - 1931年、1954年 - 1955年）に二回選ばれているほか、1951年にはサザー教授職（Sather Professorship of Classical Literature）を務め、1955年にはGoodwin Award受賞[2]。

1968年11月1日、イリノイ州シャンペーン郡アーバナにて死去。
