イギリスのロック / ネオアコバンド、ザ・スミスの作品。

ラフ・トレード、サイアー・レコード、ワーナー・ブラザース・レコード (WEA)から、スタジオ・アルバム 4枚、EP 1枚、ライブ・アルバム 1枚、コンピレーション・アルバム 7枚、シングル 19枚、ビデオ・アルバム 1本、ミュージック・ビデオ 14本 をリリースした。 1982年、マンチェスターにて結成。メンバーは、ボーカリストのモリッシー、ギタリストのジョニー・マー、ベースのアンディ・ルーク、ドラムのマイク・ジョイス。

ザ・スミスのデビュー・シングル「ハンド・イン・グローヴ」(1983年5月)は、BBCラジオ第1のDJ ジョン・ピールのプッシュにもかかわらずチャート入りを逃した。しかしそれに続くシングル2枚目「ジス・チャーミング・マン」(1983年10月)は好意的な評価を受け、UKシングル・チャート25位にランクインした。[1] その後、ザ・スミスのカルト人気は、1984年のメインストリームでの成功により定着した。シングル「ホワット・ディファレンス・ダズ・イット・メイク?」はUKチャート12位、デビュー・アルバム『ザ・スミス』 (1984年)はUKアルバム・チャート2位を記録した。
それに続く3枚のシングルは全てUKトップ20チャートにランクインし、彼らの成功は確実なものとなった。2枚目のスタジオ・アルバム『ミート・イズ・マーダー』 (1985年)は、UKチャートのトップを記録している。ただし同アルバム唯一のシングル「ザット・ジョーク・イズント・ファニー・エニモア」 (1985年)はUKトップ40入りを逃した。しかしすぐ調子にを取り戻し、後に続く6枚のシングルは全てUKトップ30に入り、さらに3枚目のアルバム『ザ・クイーン・イズ・デッド』 (1986年)はUKチャートで最高2位を記録した。

しかしUKチャートにおける成功とは裏腹に、1987年8月ギタリストのマーは、モリッシーとの確執が原因でバンドを去った。[2] その後ザ・スミスは新メンバー募集に失敗し、その年9月リリースのアルバム『ストレンジウェイズ、ヒア・ウイ・カム』を最後にバンドを解散した。最終アルバムはUKチャート2位を記録、またアメリカでもバンド結成以来最高のビルボード200中55位 を記録した。

1992年初頭、ワーナー・ブラザース・レコード (WEA)はザ･スミス全楽曲の発売権を取得した。オリジナルのスタジオ・アルバムと解散前のコンピレーション3枚を再発売した後、2枚のシングル・コンピレーション — 『ベスト Vol.1』 と 『ベスト Vol.2』 — を制作、前者はUKアルバム・チャートのトップを記録した。1995年と2001年にはさらに2枚のシングル・コンピレーションを発売、また2008年11月には新しいコンピレーション『ザ・サウンド・オブ・ザ・スミス』を発売した。
