Abi and Ryuden

suggestion on the career record tables

There are currently 4 used colors in those tables: retirement, lower division, 2nd place, and winner. I suggest adding another one for the best rank up to that point, since for rikishi with long careers it is useful to see how long ago did that person was at his best, especially when that person never won a tournament. 79.116.217.141 (talk) 08:34, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Gyōji, dohyō, and the Shinpan

A few months ago I did a lot of research into gyōji, dohyō, and the shinpan so I'm going to be going over those articles very soon and adding in what I've found to help enhance them. Hanakaze

As we have some recent articles on wrestlers notable (?) for things other than their success (Orora, Wakaichiro),I wonder if there is room for Hanakaze Daisaku, who has, I believe set a couple of longevity records (longest career, most basho). He is 48 now so it should not take too much updating. Tigerboy1966  13:18, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

We have Ichinoya Mitsuru so why not Hanakaze. It would be helpful though if there was some coverage of him in the Japanese press so we could have a secondary source too.--Pawnkingthree (talk) 23:34, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

I would LOVE to have a Hanakaze article. He's the longest serving rikishi EVER. And the only one older than me. :) When he passed longest serving mark, I wanted to make the article, but I just didn't have the time or perhaps even more the inclination I used to. I can absolutely dig up a pic for it; I take one every time I see him. I see he has a ja wiki article. I often source my rikishi article from the Japanese sources. Hanakaze is largely finished. I did check thoroughly the veracity of his longest career ever, it took time and a huge excel sheet but he is the longest by a few years. Just need to source it, mostly from sumo reference. I found nothing about his younger years on my own in any language, and apparently the person who made his jawiki articles didn't either. I was amazed to discover I couldn't find a pic of him. I think I have been to quick to delete recently. I even found one of Hokutoryu but not him. I will get one in September. Daishoho

There's a recently created article on juryo rikishi Daishoho Kiyohiro that has been moved to draftspace at Draft:Daishoho Kiyohiro due to being undersourced. I'll work on it but if anyone can add some secondary sources (there must be some Japanese press coverage) that would be a great help. He has a good chance of making makuuchi after this tournament so notability is not a problem.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 21:07, 9 January 2019 (UTC)

Wakaichiro

Our page on Wakaichiro states that he was born in Houston, Texas, giving a citation that consists of an interview with the subject. However, he only says he was raised in Houston. Looking around online, I find no RS that gives this information, and though I did find one discussion board post that stated definitively that he was born in Japan, it was just the proverbial 'something I found on the internet'. This has BLP implications, and more trivially, affects in which section he is placed on the List of non-Japanese sumo wrestlers page. Agricolae (talk) 03:52, 13 May 2019 (UTC)

@Agricolae: I have never seen any source say that he was not born in Texas. All indications are that he was born there and listed Nagasaki as his shussin because of his Japanese nationality and to not take up a foreigner spot in his stable. I get that "from Texas" doesn't definitively mean "born in Texas" but the sources I've seen say his first experience of Japan was visiting an elementary school in Nagasaki during summer vacations and picking up a bit of Japanese eg [1].-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 15:27, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

Yeah, I get all that, but the post I saw said he was born in Japan then taken to Texas in infancy (though, again, it was just from some guy on the internet). We know he grew up in Texas, and we know he is listed with hometown of Nagasaki, but if we are going to definitively state his birthplace we really should have a source that says so directly rather than us trying to deduce it from hints and whispers - I would try dropping him a quick question on his Facebook page, but that would require me to sign up for Facebook, which is not going to happen. Heh. I just looked and it appears to be a private FB page - I would have to send him a friend request, and not sure I'll do that. His Twitter page is another option. Alternatively it may be better to just change the article to "grew up in Texas" until an RS proving it one way or the other turns up.-- Pawnkingthree (talk) 19:47, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

I had hoped John Gunning might have said something about it in one of the articles he has written on foreign and mixed-race wrestlers, but he only says Wakaichiro is from Texas. I think changing his page is in order unless a definitive statement turns up, but (and this is getting into the Wikipedia weeds a little bit) we would still need to list him as either US-born or 'Japanese-born of mixed parentage' on the List of non-Japanese sumo wrestlers page. I just asked the man himself. He said he was born in Houston. I figured there was a chance he was born in Nagasaki because Japanese women often go “home” to give birth, but this is not the case with Ichiro. FourTildes (talk) 08:39, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

New rikishi articles

I am creating a Shimanoumi Koyo article in sandbox as he is the highest ranked rikishi without an article. He only has 2 kk but he is likely to be in makuuchi for a while and is a 2 time juryo champion. Should be up by Monday. Tigerboy1966  16:16, 20 July 2019 (UTC)

I'll start Tomokaze tomorrow once I'm through doing some updates on my "WP day job" which is horse-racing. Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you?
