Assessment guidelines

I suppose we ought to nut out some guidelines for assessing music-importance. I'll throw my thoughts into the ring for a start:

Although it is common to aim for a pyramid (something like 2% top, 8% high, 30% mid, 60% low), I think that in a project like this there would be nothing wrong with having mid bigger than low. Because articles on songs/albums have to cross the WP:Music hurdle to justify articles, it follows that they will have had a reasonable impact.
Low might be more suited for, say, musicians with a NZ connection who are primarily active in another country.
I would suggest that bands and performers are often more important than albums and songs.
A song doing well internationally raises its importance.

In Canada we use this as a general rules of thumb for classing ..

Top = Main articles, and sub articles on genres and your countries main music awards article (New Zealand Music Awards)
High = Would be the members of the countries highest civilian award Order of New Zealand and those with outstanding Internationale recognition.
Mid = All New Zealand Music Awards winners and nominees, for groups, indivuduals, songs, albums etc...
Low= for all the rest who have not seen any "New Zealand Music Industry" recognition.

?	Use common sense. Ultimately, assume good faith on the part of others, be bold in editing because perfection is not required. See Wikipedia:Editing policy for more information. Before starting a new article! - Notability is a concern that must be adhered to. See Wikipedia:Notability (music) for more information. Need help starting a new article? See Wikipedia:Article wizard it will help you through the process of submitting a new article to Wikipedia.
I.	Use references. This is an encyclopedia, so remember to include a ==References== section listing websites, newspapers, articles, books and other sources you used to write the article. New articles and statements added to existing articles may be deleted if unreferenced or referenced poorly. See Wikipedia:Verifiability, Wikipedia:Cite_sources and Wikipedia:References for more information.
II.	Use proper spelling and grammar. This is a very important aspect of an article. "We want to learn editors to write proper" There are helpful guidelines in regards to styles. See Wikipedia:Manual of Style (music) for more information.
III.	Use footnotes. Take advantage of the footnote ability Wikipedia has, instead of including html links inside the context include them as footnotes. See Wikipedia:Footnotes on how to use them.
IV.	Write a good lead. Be sure to write a lead that concisely summarizes the entire article into one or two paragraphs, which make sense to someone who may know nothing about the subjects in question. See Wikipedia:Lead section for more information.
V.	Stay on topic. Many articles are criticized for length; sticking to the subject matter helps eliminate this. See Wikipedia:The perfect article for more information.
VI.	Keep it simple. Remember that the average reader should be able to comprehend the erudition. Although you should use a broad vocabulary of regular, non-technical terms, do not provide such a quantity of locutions as to impel those who aspire to derive serviceable information from the article to consult a dictionary.
VII.	Use images if possible. Images enhance articles greatly, but only use them when they are necessary, and ensure that their copyright status has been specified and we are allowed to use it on Wikipedia. See Wikipedia:Images

Collaboration

Without starting an official collaboration project, I suggest we put a bit of effort into Goldenhorse - a relatively prominent band whose article is quite a mess. Scope query

Should NZ radio stations (plus sub cats) fall within the scope of this project? If so, I note that they are not tagged (at least not the sample of stations that I've had a look at). Schwede 66 19:00, 23 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

In general I would oppose this on the grounds that it requires too much subjectivity. Tagging all radio stations would clearly be wrong: (Radio Live, Radio sport anyone?) and some music stations still have very little to do with New Zealand music. But if there is a station which has had a significant influence on New Zealand music and this is specifically discussed and sourced in the article, then a music TF tag may be appropriate. For clarification, I don't have an opinion either way. I was just doing some WPNZ assessment work and asked myself that question and couldn't find the answer under the heading 'scope' on the project page. Notability of Nature's Best Songs

Hi all, I've started adding information as I couldn't believe that Loyal by Dave Dobbyn didn't have a dedicated song page, given how important it is for NZ culture! One thing I've been wondering, are all the songs from Nature's Best (i.e. voted as important NZ songs) worthy of at least a mention. There's certainly nothing about #1 (Nature) and quite a few gaps throughout the system. In some cases the songs may just be covered by album or artist, but surely, sales aside, they have to be notable. I know it's only one voting system, but still, it's the only voting system of any clout we've ever had!

Separate pages for NZMAs pre-2008 and NZ #1 albums pre 1999

Are either of these options for dedicated pages? I've added in all the details for post 1980 NZMA nominees (e.g. the 2000 awards) and wonder if the pages are getting a little overloaded for the year page. Conversely should the overall page have all these details by category and show the winners/nominees per year?

Also, I note that NZ #1 singles on the RIANZ page go back to the 80s, but the albums only go back to 1999.

Just trying to figure out what I should put time into given that list stuff is pretty easy to do once the data is on Wikipedia :)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

Coverage of classical musicians in NZ

I was surprised to discover that there are so few NZ-based classical musicians currently listed in en:Category:New Zealand classical musicians. As one example, there is currently no article for Vesa-Matti Leppänen, who has been the Concertmaster of the NZSO for 20 years.[1]. Other well-known classical musicians without articles are the violinist Amalia Hall and the guitarist Matthew Marshall. The relatively small numbers of classical musicians with articles may perhaps indicate that for many performers there are insufficient sources to support an article, but I still think this is a significant gap, and is worth time and effort. I got the SOUNZ contributor ID thing done on Wikidata, but haven't had much time to figure out how to do mass imports. We have some conductors missing too, like Marc Taddei. I've been trying to get the orchestras covered, but there's surprisingly little to go on, and the Oxford History of New Zealand Music is good but only covers up to the 1980s. I didn't know about the SOUNZ contributor ID; well done getting that established, Jonathanischoice. Thought I'd add my mate Robert Ibell to Wikidata. He's probably not notable as a musician but would have probably cleared the bar as a cycling advocate. Problem is that he stopped that latter activity in earnest about 15 years ago and therefore, there is little news coverage online about that period of his life. I have tried to find information about Meltdown Records, a 1980's Massey University linked record company form the 1970's without much success. If any of you have access to publications on the New Zealand music scene from that era I would appreciate it if you could take a look at the article and see if you can make any improvements otheriwse they are heading for probable deletion. Crystal Palace Theatre

I've created an article for the Crystal Palace Theatre. The building has a lot of history with the New Zealand music scene although I have no familiarity with it personally.
