The Emberverse series = alternate history? Is Emberverse series actually alternate history or is it more post-apoc/sci fi? I know Uchronia.com does not list it as alternate history, but what do you guys think? Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 13:15, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
I found an interview with Stirling where he mentions that the Emberverse series barely meets the requirements for alternate history. With that mention and Jon's arguments I am convinced that the series is not alternate history. Unless someone can make a better argument I will be changing all of the Emberverse articles soon.Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 17:31, 8 September 2008 (UTC) Membership drive? How's this for a member userbox?

Ta. TREKphiler hit me ♠ 22:04, 24 July 2008 (UTC) August 2008 CollaborationI think every month we should pool our efforts into improving one article dealing with alternate history. For our first collaboration, which will begin on August 1st, I nominate Alternate history. The article is in need of a cleanup and could do with some more cites. Is that cool or are there any other nominees? Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 13:34, 25 July 2008 (UTC)
Does anyone know of any good class article we may want to model the alternate history article after? Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 22:54, 27 July 2008 (UTC) Today begins our August collaboration on Alternate history. I've added a To do list template on the talk page where we can list things that need to be done to improve the article. Our biggest concern would be finding credible sources for it. I think though its possible to elevate the article to Good status. Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 13:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
There are a hell of a lot of examples of alternate histories depending on the medium. Several need to be cut and we need to leave just the notable ones. I figure mostly just the first examples and any award winners.Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 15:51, 27 August 2008 (UTC) ShortcutWe should probably get a shortcut created for the project. The obvious choice would be WP:AH, but, that one's already taken by WikiProject Australian history. Does anyone have any other ideas? WP:ALTHIST is available (and is now a shortcut to here), but there should probably also be another, shorter shortcut. -- Imperator3733 (talk) 22:50, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
HiI just noticed that someone added this group's template to Fallout (video game). I would just like to say, neat group! Good luck with your efforts. There was this neat short story in an anthology edited by Gardner Dozois about Superman crash-landing in Bavaria instead of Kansas as a baby, and later being accused of war crimes in a tribunal following World War II. Maybe you'll write about that one day! SharkD (talk) 03:27, 28 July 2008 (UTC) This article has been proposed to be deleted. If anyone thinks it should be saved, you should enter the debate. Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 03:55, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
I did some work on the article, added some references, links, and a section about awards. I haven't tried to rewrite it though because I have not read the books myself. You know its funny, here I am trying to save the article and I'm considered one of the enemy in the book (those evil "Hamiltonians, haha). Alternative history=Alternate historyKeep an eye out for older articles that use "alternative history" instead of alternate history. If not, it might be a useful addition, if yes, can somebody point me to it? Thanks, EA210269 (talk) 15:15, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
I created a novel template (most of the pages we tag seem to be novels) in my sandbox. Feel free to comment or edit it and if everyone is cool with it I will use it to start a new page article. Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 15:43, 6 August 2008 (UTC)
Questions1. For the Charles Stross Merchant Prince stories, why are 3 rated as mid importance and 1 rated low? 2. Are we now saying that any story with parallel universes in which one or more universes are alternate history universes part of this project? This would encompass almost all parallel universe stories. I don't have a problem with this, but I think that we should be clear on this point. Dfmclean (talk) 15:53, 8 August 2008 (UTC)
Map requestsI went ahead and took care of our first (and currently only) map request (see here for the map). Just wondering what the protocol should be: should I just remove the request from the list entirely, or should we begin some kind of archive of map requests for posterity? -- Comandante {Talk} 01:47, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Good point on the participants article, I redirected it after making a few changes to the WWII article. Also Operation Blackbeard could be added to the article also.Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 13:05, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
Jon (talk) 17:53, 28 August 2008 (UTC)
I'm noticing that some articles use "Southern Victory" instead of "Timeline 191" to name the series. I'm assuming this problem has arised because Turtledove has not yet named the series. Still if no one has a problem with it I propose we change all articles to reflect the Timeline 191 name since its the name of the main article and the category.Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 13:18, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Another proposal, I thinking of spliting Institutions in the Southern Victory (Timeline-191) series into three different articles: United States of America (Timeline 191), Confederate States of America (Timeline 191), and Other nations in Timeline 191. The first two would be based off the usual template used for nations in Wikipedia with the ficitonal references thrown in. The last one would be simply a list of excess information. Thoughts?Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 17:33, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
WWII Alternate HistoriesIs there enough info to create an article just on WWII Alternate Histories? See Category:World War II alternate histories for more info.Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 19:39, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
Speaking of World War II alternate histories, many of them have long "See also" sections to the point that they are becoming lists. I propose we shorten them where we find them to only reflect those articles that are similar. For example if we are dealing with a novel that deals with a total Nazi victory like High Castle, than the See Also section should only reflect similar novels and not for example Iron Dream or Plot Against America which did not deal with a Nazi victory.Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 14:04, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Alternate historyWikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7. We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations. A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible. We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection before December 2008, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Alien space batsI have created a possible "alien space bats" article in one of my sandboxes. Please take a look at it and comment on it. I'm worried about creating it because there have been attempts before and they have been deleted, but I believe this one has enough sources to prove notability. Terry Pratchett's NationI added the Alternate History template to the article on Nation (novel). It can be implied from some of the goings on in the book, but Pratchett outright says as much in his notes in the back. Though not a member of this project, I did set class to start. Just seemed as if there was more than enough to take it out of stub. IMHO (talk) 22:40, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Archive issues temporarily fixed (sort of)I've commented out the ClueBot III template code which handles the archiving. In its place, I put a link to the current archive. This seems to have fixed the problems with the extra wikilinks, but it does mean that no more automatic archiving can happen. -- Imperator3733 (talk) 17:40, 24 October 2008 (UTC) EmberverseAfter reading several reviews on Dies the Fire I think its safe to say that the Emberverse series of book does count as alternate history for several reasons: 1) various reviewers call it an alternate history, 2) the POD happens in the past, the proximity to the present or implausibility of the event does not make it any less an alternate history, 3) Stirling himself considers it alternate history. Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 19:04, 2 November 2008 (UTC) 1632 seriesMost of the articles for the books in the 1632 series need a lot of work. Coordinators' working groupHi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators. All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 04:40, 28 February 2009 (UTC) Assiti Shards / 1632 / Ring of FireCan someone make a taskforce, workgroup or noticeboard for this? The talk page for a pseudo-project involving these works is actually spread across the talk pages of several articles and categories. It would be better to consolidate the "project related" talk in one location, and also since such talk violates the protocols of use concerning article and category talk pages, it should be elsewhere (ie. they are not talking about improving the article/category in question, but about series templates, new book articles, etc) Suggestion is: WikiProject Alternate History/Assiti Shards noticeboard or WikiProject Alternate History/Assiti Shards task force or WikiProject Alternate History/Assiti Shards work group That way the talk can be moved to that talk page, and the various article/template/category talk pages can be archived, cleaned up to make them about their related article/template/category pages, and those unrelated threads moved to the new centralized discussion. (and a switch would need to be added to the AH WikiProject template indicating the new taskforce/workgroup) {{#invoke:WikiProject banner|main |PROJECT = Alternate History |BANNER_NAME = Template:Alternate History WikiProject |small = {{{small|}}} |category= {{{category|¬}}} |listas = {{{listas|}}} |PROJECT_LINK = Wikipedia:WikiProject Alternate History |IMAGE_LEFT = ConfederateLincoln.png |IMAGE_LEFT_LARGE = 90px |QUALITY_SCALE = yes |class = {{{class|}}} |IMPORTANCE_SCALE = yes |importance = {{{importance|}}} |MAIN_CAT = WikiProject Alternate History articles |tf 1 = {{{assiti|{{{Assiti|{{{1632|}}}}}}}}} |TF_1_LINK = Wikipedia:WikiProject Alternate History/Workgroups/Assiti Shards |TF_1_NAME = the Assiti Shards notice board |TF_1_NESTED = Assiti Shards |TF_1_IMAGE = <div style="font-size:3em; line-height:1;">1632</div> |TF_1_IMPORTANCE = yes |tf 1 importance={{{assiti-importance|{{{Assiti-importance|{{{1632-importance|}}}}}}}}} |TF_1_ASSESSMENT_CAT=Assiti Shards articles }}

The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here. If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. Revitalizing the ProjectRecently several alternate history articles have been deleted and there are proposals to delete more. Whether you agree or not with the deletions, this is a sign that the alternate history related articles on Wikipedia need some serious work. Alternate History articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 releaseVersion 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm. We would like to ask you to review the Alternate History articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th. We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. You refer to 'alternate history', when you mean 'alternative history'. Something that is 'alternate' is something which 'occurs in turn repeatedly', or as an adjective, 'every other' time. Whereas, something that is alternative is something which is 'available as another possibility'. Therefore, this page should be named 'Alternative History'. .comI created an entry for AlternateHistory.com - I saw it had been created in the past more than a decade ago and was deleted for relevancy, but it is mentioned in other articles and has existed for some time with considerable popularity so figured I should go ahead and add an entry for it. Project icon logo againThe project icon doesn't make a lot of sense - Lincoln on a Confederate flag, in addition to being pointlessly offensive, is US centric and doesn't really mean anything. There were a couple of interesting ideas up above - the butterfly logo and the upside down globe. Something like a map from The Man in the High Castle would be an option (albeit a bit of recentism since they're just a popular work right now). Or what I think might be simple would be to take the globe portion of the UN logo and color it red (see File:Red-300dpi.png for an image that has a red UN logo) and use that. It is readily recognized as not the normal logo, and it's inclusive of all of the world. --B (talk) 01:54, 19 November 2018 (UTC) A new newsletter directory is out!A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.
Request for information on WP1.0 web toolHello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables. We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. The existing one is weird and problematic. I get that the (American) Civil War is a very fruitful ground for alternate history, but plenty of alternate history has nothing to do with it whatsoever. Get something generic like like flowchart arrows diverging made from messing around with commons:Category:Mathematical_arrows or the like. Or just have no image, that's fine too, an image isn't strictly necessary. SnowFire (talk) 09:12, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
