The Emberverse series = alternate history?

Is Emberverse series actually alternate history or is it more post-apoc/sci fi? I know Uchronia.com does not list it as alternate history, but what do you guys think? Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 13:15, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Personaly I'd classify it as 99% post-apoc/sci fi, 1% alt history and so not really without the scope of an alternate history project. From that main article, "The Change" was only six years before first published and so the point of the diverage from the real history is very recent, perhaps about the time the author started writing the book? Now if someone has info showing a point of departure further in the past, that might change my opinon. Jon (talk) 17:53, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I'd classify it as a bit more balanced, maybe 75% post-apoc/sci fi, 25% alt history or 66% post-apoc/sci fi, 33% alt history. The Change happened at the same instant as The Event in the Nantucket series, of which the first book was released in 1998. The 1998 date (can't remember it exactly, sometime in March, I think) is the PoD of the series -- there isn't anything earlier. However, the PoD is now over 10 years ago, so I think it's a bit more alt history than 1%. It's also related to the Nantucket series, which definetly falls into alternate history. -- Imperator3733 (talk) 19:38, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Nantucket series itself is clearly alt history in the same sub genre as 1632. But Emberverse is in a slightly different universe (the one where the island did not appear in the past but the change occurs sending the island into the past of a different universe & knocking out electricy for the rest of the worth. Also the measuring point for how far back a PoD is doesn't change as time pasts past date of first publication of the novel. (Otherwise novels in the 1930s set in the 1960s would have a PoD fourty years ago when in actualy it's merely outdated future SF). Also in a series it's normally the first book in the series that's writen that serves as the comparsion. (In TL-191 point of depature would be compared against publication date of How Few Remain and not In At The Death) Jon (talk) 17:46, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

I found an interview with Stirling where he mentions that the Emberverse series barely meets the requirements for alternate history. With that mention and Jon's arguments I am convinced that the series is not alternate history. August 2008 Collaboration

I think every month we should pool our efforts into improving one article dealing with alternate history. For our first collaboration, which will begin on August 1st, I nominate Alternate history. The article is in need of a cleanup and could do with some more cites. Is that cool or are there any other nominees? Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 13:34, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

That's probably the best choice for our first article. Always a good idea to begin at the beginning. Also, while I'm here, where precisely do we draw the line with classifying articles as alternate history? Timeline-191 is obviously AH, but what about Nineteen Eighty-Four? Even though at the time it was published it was considered speculative fiction, the time the events took place is long past, and technically qualifies as an AH. Then there's a few of H.G. Wells' works, like The World Set Free and The Shape of Things to Come which have a similar dilemma. I figure we can be broad and accept these works and others as AH, or we can come up with specific requirements an article must meet in order to be considered AH (a relatively identifiable POD, definable differences from events of our timeline, whether or not the work was intended by the author to be AH rather than speculation, etc.). -- Comandante {Talk} 21:52, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Alternate history is a good starting point. As far as the boundaries, we should probably come up with some requirements. We also need to get an assessment scale created (probably based on WP:SF's assessment scale). -- Imperator3733 (talk) 22:39, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

I'm going to throw out that we don't recognize novels and other forms of media like 1984 as alternate history. For example is 2001: A Space Odyssey alternate history just because the time it was set has come and gone? The list goes on and on, but books like that would be better served in other categories. Agreed, to the extent that events in 1984 and 2001 Space Odyssey don't agree with reality (quite major for 1984, more minor for 2001) they are outdated futurestic sci/fi; not alternative history. Jon (talk) 17:50, 29 July 2008 (UTC)

Today begins our August collaboration on Alternate history. I've added a To do list template on the talk page where we can list things that need to be done to improve the article. Our biggest concern would be finding credible sources for it. I think though its possible to elevate the article to Good status. Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 13:07, 1 August 2008 (UTC)

So there's been a lot of work done on the alternate history article, so if you haven't seen it you should check it out. What it really needs though is a good proofreading, and that's something I'm not that great at. Please take some time to read the article and make some changes. Also keep a look out for excessive examples and things that may need to be cited. I did a lot of research yesterday and found a bunch of articles I plan to work into the article as soon as I get a chance to read them all.Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 13:25, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

I've done some proofreading on Alternate history and I'll be doing some more soon. I've also started using WP:AWB with a recursive category for Category:Alternate history. Shortcut

We should probably get a shortcut created for the project. The obvious choice would be WP:AH, but, that one's already taken by WikiProject Australian history. Does anyone have any other ideas? I just noticed that someone added this group's template to Fallout (video game). I would just like to say, neat group! Good luck with your efforts. There was this neat short story in an anthology edited by Gardner Dozois about Superman crash-landing in Bavaria instead of Kansas as a baby, and later being accused of war crimes in a tribunal following World War II. I did some work on the article, added some references, links, and a section about awards. I haven't tried to rewrite it though because I have not read the books myself. Since the project is still relatively new we do not have a new article page yet, but you right it is something we need to create. Questions

1. For the Charles Stross Merchant Prince stories, why are 3 rated as mid importance and 1 rated low?

2. Are we now saying that any story with parallel universes in which one or more universes are alternate history universes part of this project? This would encompass almost all parallel universe stories. I don't have a problem with this, but I think that we should be clear on this point.

My bad I wasn't paying attention, I have reassed them unless someone disagrees with my choice. As for #2, while you may be correct that not every parallel universe story is AH, some are when the universe in question deals with a change in the past like these novels. Also the fact that it won the Sidewise Award for Alternate History is a credible reason that the universe is AH. Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 16:04, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

I just wanted to clarify things. For example, Heinlein's Number of the Beast is a parallel universe story in which some alternate histories are encountered. The TV show Sliders is almost entirely parallel universes with alternate histories. There are parallel universe stories where alternate histories certainly exist but are not a particularly important part of the plot (Zelazny's Amber books). I completely agree with you (also there is Sidewise in Time and the Paratime Patrol universe), but I think the Merchant Prince stories are alternate histories. For others we will have to just take a case by case basis.Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 16:50, 8 August 2008 (UTC)

The TL 191 main article is already long enough as is. As an alternative, I would sugest merging TL 191 WW 1 into Great War and TL 191 WW 2 into Settling Accounts. We should also where TL 191 article is more detailed than How Few Remain, Great War, American Empire, and Settling Accounts move details to the sub pages and then rewrite TL 191 as more of a summary with links to them. I'm noticing that some articles use "Southern Victory" instead of "Timeline 191" to name the series. I'm assuming this problem has arised because Turtledove has not yet named the series. Another proposal, I thinking of spliting Institutions in the Southern Victory (Timeline-191) series into three different articles: United States of America (Timeline 191), Confederate States of America (Timeline 191), and Other nations in Timeline 191. The first two would be based off the usual template used for nations in Wikipedia with the ficitonal references thrown in. The last one would be simply a list of excess information. WWII Alternate Histories

Well, in order to make such an glorified category page some sort of classification scheme would need to be devised. (Perhaps four listings: A) Japan defeated but not Germany B) Germany defeted but not Japan C) Both Germany & Japan victrious D) Both Germany & Japan lose (but thru some other way). Class D stories aren't very much in the popular literature now but there were quite a few stories by those in the German & Japanese militaries in the late 40s to mid 50s of how if one of their superiors hadn't make [fill in the blank] blunder they would have lasted longer before being defeated. Speaking of World War II alternate histories, many of them have long "See also" sections to the point that they are becoming lists. I propose we shorten them where we find them to only reflect those articles that are similar. For example if we are dealing with a novel that deals with a total Nazi victory like High Castle, than the See Also section should only reflect similar novels and not for example Iron Dream or Plot Against America which did not deal with a Nazi victory.Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 14:04, 5 September 2008 (UTC)

Terry Pratchett's Nation

I added the Alternate History template to the article on Nation (novel). It can be implied from some of the goings on in the book, but Pratchett outright says as much in his notes in the back.

Though not a member of this project, I did set class to start. Just seemed as if there was more than enough to take it out of stub. IMHO (talk) 22:40, 21 October 2008 (UTC)

Archive issues temporarily fixed (sort of)

I've commented out the ClueBot III template code which handles the archiving. In its place, I put a link to the current archive. Emberverse

After reading several reviews on Dies the Fire I think its safe to say that the Emberverse series of book does count as alternate history for several reasons: 1) various reviewers call it an alternate history, 2) the POD happens in the past, the proximity to the present or implausibility of the event does not make it any less an alternate history, 3) Stirling himself considers it alternate history. 1632 series

Most of the articles for the books in the 1632 series need a lot of work. Many of them read like advertisements to the series. 1634: The Baltic War had three plot summaries from other novels. You can find all of them in this category:Category:1632 series books. I propose a collaborative effort because they all need some serious work. Jonbar Hinge

Can I get some help watching this page, some IPs have been putting a lot of unsourced stuff and now it has just gotten weird. Here is what was recently added: "Postmodern counterfactualists contend that Jonbar Hinges have always been with us but were rendered invisible by the discourses of positivism and Whiggish history. It is also possible that Williamson uncovered the Jonbar Hinge while himself time traveling through consciousness expansion, during which it was revealed to him by Krishna, making the discovery of the Jonbar Hinge itself a Jonbar Hinge."

I'm going to create under the name Category:American Civil War alternate histories since the name of the Wikipedia page is American Civil War. Assiti Shards / 1632 / Ring of Fire

Can someone make a taskforce, workgroup or noticeboard for this? The talk page for a pseudo-project involving these works is actually spread across the talk pages of several articles and categories. It would be better to consolidate the "project related" talk in one location, and also since such talk violates the protocols of use concerning article and category talk pages, it should be elsewhere (ie. they are not talking about improving the article/category in question, but about series templates, new book articles, etc)

Suggestion is: WikiProject Alternate History/Assiti Shards noticeboard or WikiProject Alternate History/Assiti Shards task force or WikiProject Alternate History/Assiti Shards work group

That way the talk can be moved to that talk page, and the various article/template/category talk pages can be archived, cleaned up to make them about their related article/template/category pages, and those unrelated threads moved to the new centralized discussion. (and a switch would need to be added to the AH WikiProject template indicating the new taskforce/workgroup)

Size of rewritting and contents

Is currently rewritting the plot summary on Weapons of Choice as i see it being partly incorrect and also in a bit of need of rewritting, however in unsure how detailed i should be with the summary, have about dubbled the "The Transition" part, any suggestion ? --> Halmstad, Charla to moi 21:18, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

While there is no official plot summary length, I recommend keeping under 700 words, though if you must don't let it go over 1000. I would also suggest adding some reviews for a reception and theme section to improve the article as a whole. Zombie Hunter Smurf (talk) 21:44, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Revitalizing the Project

Recently several alternate history articles have been deleted and there are proposals to delete more. Whether you agree or not with the deletions, this is a sign that the alternate history related articles on Wikipedia need some serious work.

As members of WikiProject Alternate History, we can work together to improve these articles so such a mass deletion will not happen again. I know this project has been dormant for sometime, but I feel that it can be revitalized if we pull together.

If you are still interested in being a member of this Project, here are some ideas I have that we can work on:

1. Improve the Alternate history article to Good and then Featured class. This should be the flagship article of our project. I have been working on a new version in my sandbox if anyone is interested to see: User:Zombie Hunter Smurf/Sandbox3
2. Complete a serious reorganization of the 1632 series articles before they are mass deleted like the Timeline 191 articles.
3. Elect project coordinators (I’m thinking at least three) who keep the project on track by encouraging collaborative work and brainstorming new ideas.
4. Restart the monthly collaborative projects to improve certain articles.
5. Continue tagging alternate history related articles with the project banner and invite users to join the group.

It has been suggested that some of the currently proposed deletes could be combined into a 1632 fandom article. The fandom of the seires might have some notability. Since GGVIII has recently been deleted, it is entirely possible that more of the Gazettes would be target making it imperative in improving the articles to prevent deletion. Since 1-4 were published in print it shouldn't be difficult to find third party reliable sources. Since the rest, however, have not been published as such they may prove more difficult. I have been moving most of the deleted material to the Eric Flint Wiki though for many articles I have broken up (like the 1632 institutions and places). Also I haven't finished moving the Grantville Gazette articles or the 1632 writers (though I have that article saved on my computer). I believe if you want to get access to deleted articles you need to talk to the admin who deleted it. A task force (TF) is a sub-wikiproject, that is included as a subcompartment of a wikiproject. It works the same way, except in a more focused area. The WPBANNERMETA has hooks built in to support TFs. A TF, if it is large enough, supports its own Work Groups (WG), and WGs if they are large enough have separate Noticeboards (NB). ... US centric image in the WikiProject Alternate History template

Each time I look at {{WikiProject Alternate History}} I keep thinking that it is a template related to the (alternative) American Civil War. It is true that those stories form a very popular section of all alternate histories, but... can we perhaps come with a more global image? I concur - This project, as is the genre of Alternate History itself, broader than the American Civil War. Also, while some might think "Confederate Lincoln" awesome, many more may find it offensive. Given the historic and still lingering connection between the Confederate flag and racism, perhaps someone could devise a more appropriate moniker for this project. After first earlier comments above I looked over in the commons for possible icons that might fit this project and found a reverse-rotating earth gif. Perhaps it would fit the bill? With this in mind, I was BOLD and replaced the images in Template:User WP AH 2 with the globe. I hope this helps move the conversation forward. Drdpw (talk) 14:36, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

My concern is that the globe isn't accruate. If you look, you can see that Africa goes almost all the way to the poles. It's like they took a map and cut off everything north and south of 60 degrees and wrapped that around a sphere..Naraht (talk) 20:27, 29 September 2012 (UTC)

I noticed that too, but presumed that the image used to create the globe showed the earth at the Summer Solstice. Perhaps someone could create another reverse-rotating globe for the project. Alternate History articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Alternate History articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. Project name?

Hello all, not completely sure how to use Wikipedia, but I wanted to point out that the foundation of this page is mistaken. You refer to 'alternate history', when you mean 'alternative history'. Something that is 'alternate' is something which 'occurs in turn repeatedly', or as an adjective, 'every other' time. Whereas, something that is alternative is something which is 'available as another possibility'. Therefore, this page should be named 'Alternative History'. Though technically not grammatical (its a misuse of the word alternate), its what the genre is most often called because of the connection between alternative history and secret history/conspiracy theories which as a serious form of historical discussion is not something AH writers like to be associated with.--Ollyoxenfree (talk) 23:09, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. Project icon logo again

The project icon doesn't make a lot of sense - Lincoln on a Confederate flag, in addition to being pointlessly offensive, is US centric and doesn't really mean anything. There were a couple of interesting ideas up above - the butterfly logo and the upside down globe. Something like a map from The Man in the High Castle would be an option (albeit a bit of recentism since they're just a popular work right now). Or what I think might be simple would be to take the globe portion of the UN logo and color it red (see File:Red-300dpi.png for an image that has a red UN logo) and use that. It is readily recognized as not the normal logo, and it's inclusive of all of the world. --B (talk) 01:54, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Wikiproject image, part 2

I see it was discussed all the way back in 2012, and I recognize this is a sparsely-trafficked Wikiproject, but really, can we get a new image? The existing one is weird and problematic. I get that the (American) Civil War is a very fruitful ground for alternate history, but plenty of alternate history has nothing to do with it whatsoever. Get something generic like like flowchart arrows diverging made from messing around with commons:Category:Mathematical_arrows or the like. Or just have no image, that's fine too, an image isn't strictly necessary. SnowFire (talk) 09:12, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

SnowFire, 100% agree with this. Scrolling through this talk page, it seems like there is a relatively clear consensus over the years that the current image is unsuitable because it is too US-centric and also needlessly offensive/provocative.
