Miscellaneous

Just with the to-do list: is Adelaide going to follow the naming conventions established in Sydney and Melbourne? If that's going to be the case, then the suburbs should be at Suburb, South Australia, and railway stations at Station railway station, Adelaide. Ambi 02:22, 8 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, I guess we are. Adelaide's public transport system is unique however and we have lots of "bus interchanges" (on the Adelaide O-Bahn) which work similarly to railway stations in other places. - Aaron Hill 02:47, Oct 8, 2004 (UTC)

I think of them as relatively large railway stations, so yeah they probably are worth creating articles on especially considering their unique qualities. I catch the O-Bahn from Paradise Interchange just about every day, but I don't have a camera. As for the stations thingy, there's Belair, Noarlunga, Gawler, Tonsley... Suburb, South Australia should be fine. If not, we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. Alphax (talk) 15:00, Oct 25, 2004 (UTC)

Local Government Areas of South Australia

Do we have a consensus process for adding things to the open tasks panel? The Local Government Areas of South Australia list has links mostly just to the last part of a name (District Council/City of ...) and it seems more good luck than good management if it hits something about the town/suburb at the seat of government. See for example the link for City of Charles Sturt links to Charles Sturt The explorer, with no reference to the city. Very few of the town names are links to Town, South Australia rather than just Town. Is there a standard for the name syntax to use for local government areas? Should they redirect to the main town/suburb? --ScottDavis 13:03, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

There is a standard - using the official name. That's what we've done in Victoria and New South Wales, anyway. I prefer to have seperate articles on the municipality and the individual towns, and you get around messy situations like that article by going with the full name. Ambi 13:14, 30 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Torrens navigation

Does anybody have a reference to support the claim in River Torrens that it used to be navigable up to the city for cargo from the Port? I've never heard that anywhere else. --ScottDavis 03:40, 7 May 2005 (UTC)

hi - i do remember reading that there was a plan for a canal to be built up the centre of Port Road so that barges of cargo could be sailed to the city - of ocurse it never happened..... PCA

Goyders Line

Welcome, and thanks for the maps. The WikiProject is about improving the breadth and depth of articles about Adelaide itself (probably accepted to mean the metro area and what you can see from it). However, the people interested in the rest of the state are probably also members here, so conversations about rural and state government things can happen either here or at the Australian Wikipedians' notice board. --ScottDavis 09:23, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

The Jam Factory

I was looking to start an article on the Jam Factory, but found The Jam Factory already occupied by an article on a Melbourne shopping centre. Any recomendations on a suitable title for Adelaide's infinitely more notable Jam Factory, one of Australia's most distinguished contemporary design institution. I considered moving the existing article to The Jam Factory, Melbourne and then creating The Jam Factory, Adelaide, but wondered if The Jam Factory was the correct name at all.-- Cyberjunkie ^TALK 07:57, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Suburb categories

Can anyone explain the conceptual difference between Category:Adelaide suburb stubs and Category:Incomplete Adelaide suburbs? They are both subcategories of Category:Suburbs of Adelaide. --ScottDavis 05:10, 25 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Yes, it is outmoded. I modelled the suburb area of the Adelaide WikiProject on that of the Sydney WikiProject. I think the Canberra WikiProject just recently retired the "incomplete suburbs" category in favour of "stubs". I'd just do it. There's unlikely to be any other interested parties. I think the best way to go is to make sure all suburbs are in Category:Suburbs of Adelaide, and change the stub message to avoid the incomplete category, making sure the stub notice goes on all appropriate articles as well. I've emptied Category:Incomplete Adelaide suburbs, and taken the useful bits of its description into Category:Adelaide suburb stubs. Cyberjunkie needs to nominate the category for speedy deletion, as that must be done by the creator. --ScottDavis 07:24, 26 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Good resource

For all looking to write about (the history of) Adelaide and South Australia, the State Library of South Australia has today launched The Manning Index, which contains references to, and extracts from over a hundred years of journals, newspapers and gazettes published in South Australia. Mapit-AUS-suburbscale

I notice a number of suburb articles are getting {{Mapit-AUS-suburbscale}} added to the External links section. I think this is a good move, but wish to note it does not replace putting the coordinates elsewhere in the article as well for two reasons:

1. The template does not display the coordinates, so printing the article or using screen reading software does not include the coordinates.
2. The Mapit template will probably not work for tools processing coordinates for purposes like the full list of locations at http://www.webkuehn.de/hobbys/wikipedia/geokoordinaten.html for display in Google Earth.

Suburb expansion

Hey I have been a member on this project since August (joined wikipedia in july) and already created around 6 suburb articles. Everyone your doing a great job but this project need more members to finish the project quicker. (Empty2005 14:46, 5 October 2005 (UTC))

New stub templates

As a result of the discusion at WP:WSS/P about stub templates for Australian cities, there are now new templates relating to Adelaide. This brings its template names and scope in line with other places around the world.

• In place of the old {{Adelstub}}, we now have {{Adelaide-stub}}, which links with Category:Adelaide stubs
• In place of the old {{Adelaide suburb stub}}, we now have {{Adelaide-geo-stub}}, which links with Category:Adelaide geography stubs. This allows not only suburbs, but also roads, buildings, rivers, hills and the like in the city to be stubbed with this template. Note that buildings should be double stubbed with {{struct-stub}}. Note also that there is now a separate {{SouthAustralia-geo-stub}} - it is quite possible that a lot of stubs relating to Adelaide's geography are currently marked with this (or that people in your WikiProject will know enough about the rest of the state to be able to expand some of these stubs too!)
• {{Adelaide transport stub}} is no longer to be used. Transport articles relating to Adelaide should be either double-stubbed with {{Adelaide-stub}} and {{Australia-rail-stub}} (for railways) or {{Adelaide-geo-stub}} and {{Australia-road-stub}} (for roads).

Government tasks

I've added another box to the Tasks section of the project page, Government. I've set it up with the local government areas, state electoral districts and current members of the South Australian House of Assembly. The numbers relate to the whole state, not just the metro area, but they wouldn't actually change by much to only be the metro area. I thought the state government areas are important with a state election coming up next year. Indigenous Groups

I've requested in discussion pages for South Australia and Australian Aborigines to include articles on Indigenous groups and possibly individual groups. I removed a reference of the Kaurna as 'Stone Age' from the Mt Osmond Page. Unbelievable to come across that sort of description in this day and age, where did the original text come from, there is no reference that I can see? (Michael, a Mt Osmond Resident.)

Avoiding crappy stubs

Just wondering... instead of starting really bad stubs on eg. suburbs, might it be better to use /temp as a collaborative area until there's a half decent article? Or should we just go ahead and start them - eg. I could start Lobethal right now with "Lobethal is a small town in South Australia famous for it's annual Christmas light display". Thoughts? Adelaide has been far more restrained in this regard then the other cities. Look at Sydney for example. I see nothing wrong with decent stubs for suburbs - a decent stub in my eyes being at least a few sentences long. It should provide basic information about its location (relative to Adelaide and its surrounding area), its postcode and its LGA. Anything less is liable to be speedily deleted. If you come across stubs of this sort, please ensure it has the {{WPANotice}} on its talk page to ward off the deletionist hoards (it's a Project tailsman, if you will). --Cyberjunkie | Talk 09:15, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

I think we got around this quite nicely in Canberra. When we first did this for Australia with the Melbourne project, we ended up creating a lot of profoundly useless substubs to fill the void; when we did this more recently with Canberra, each suburb had at least a few sentences of information (name origin, year founded, population, location, street name theme if any, basic description of facilities), which didn't take too long to create, but at least made the stubs useful. Those things are easier to find for Canberra than for most places. We can also find Name Search geographic coordinates, federal electorate and state electorate. We could develop (steal) a template to show the neighbouring suburbs and populate them from the street directory. Using a street directory, you can easily get a lot of basic info such as LGA, postcode, distance from CBD, dirn from CBD, adjacent suburbs aand boundaries, what are the closest schools, what landmarks are written in the street directory, large factories and train stations. With the stuff about buses, you can get the Metroguide from the Adelaide Metro office in Currie St in the city, and this is a street directory with the bus routes marked into it, so you know info about the public transport in the area. Outer Harbour/Harbor

Would anyone who enjoys doing this sort of thing like to edit the various references to Outer Harbour to make them Outer Harbor, and maybe set up a re-direct or two?

Correct spelling in 2005 is Outer Harbor. Check the Australia Post postcode guide, up-to-date street directory or Adelaide Metro timetables if you need to confirm.

I'm particularly thinking about various railway articles (some of which I've posted) that refer to Outer Harbo(u)r station or the Outer Harbo(u)r railway line. Some conscientious editors have 'corrected' my Harbor to Harbour & some wikilinks currently lead nowhere.

I'm not shying from this task myself, but don't want to waste time editing only to have my corrections reversed by enthusiastic but geographically-misguided wikipedians.

I'll most likely write the article on the Outer Harbor line in near future, unless I get too disgruntled with Wikipedia first.

SA Town Help

I created a subpage (on my page) tonight that I will be using as a quick way to get to the online sites that have pertinant info on towns.

• It links firstly to the Wiki article (either blue or red link)
• gives the postcode (I used the Postcodes article as the basis)
• links to the the SA placenames site (linking as directly as possible for the townname)
• links to the Geoscience page for that locality

I plan on linking to the State Library of SA, Manning Index, though this is somewhat more difficult to create the links efficiently. If you have other sites that you find are helpful, please let me know, at this page. I thought that some of you might find the page helpful as you work on the towns of SA. I have complimentary pages at User:ScottDavis/plain town names. The intent is to delete blue links that point to redirects or disambig pages (or pages with {{otheruses}} templates to disambig pages) for the names. This helps readers searching for a placename to make sure they can find the right article without having to add a state name to their search. --Scott Davis ^Talk 14:12, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

The page was getting a little heavy to load, so it is now broken down alphabetically. There are now direct links to Google, Wilkins Travel, and Walkabout. I also introduced links to placenames at the State Library of SA, Manning Index for placenames from "A to C", and decided to stop. The links take quite some production, and the places are more borderline priority if a priority at all. If I find that these lower priority placename articles are getting written over time, I may continue to add some more links. The site is fairly easy to navigate, from the top page in any case.

Image use from SA Tourism

I went online to SA Tourism and found out they have an image bank. I requested permission to use their photos and images for wikipedia (specifically the Adelaide article), and gave them details how images are to be used. Images are free to be used on wikipedia, regardless of whether it is a commerical organisation or not, per my application. They however, requested the following:

• All images and maps supplied are to be used strictly for the positive promotion of South Australia as a tourism and travel destination.
• All images and maps are protected by copyright to the South Australian Tourism Commission.
• All images, maps, video footage, logos and editorial text remain the property of the SATC.
• This must appear on all the pages of all images from SA Tourism:

The South Australian Tourism Commission releases materials solely for the purpose of positive promotion of South Australia as a tourism and travel destination.

List of closed Adelaide railway stations

Help!

With the state election on the horizon, I've started working on writing electorate articles and getting others up to scratch. One of those on my to-do list is the Clare Valley district of Frome. However, the list of members on the State Electoral Office website only covers the second and third of its incarnations (1938-1977 and 1993-present), not its first incarnation (1884-1902). I hate leaving gaps in my work, but I'm not sure how I could possibly find that information on my own.

Which is where I could really do with some assistance. Unfortunately, the State Electoral Office doesn't seem to have an email address for these sorts of things, but they do have a contact number for a Research Officer who could well be able to answer this question. It'd cost me a lot to call from interstate, and I'm notoriously bad at these things anyway, so is there any chance one of you might be able to help me out? It'd be much appreciated. categories and sub-categories

Is it alright with everyone if articles that belong to a certain sub-category do not also belong to that super-category. Eg should an article about a rail-way station just be in Category:Railway stations in Adelaide? and not in Category:Transport in Adelaide? --Maelgwn 13:40, 19 January 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure I like the idea of having Wikipedia Version 1.0. I know the idea has been thrown around for some time, but making a static version would mean Wikipedia would lose many of its current advantages. To me, it is just not worth putting that much time into. The live project is a far higher priority. Donama 00:46, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

I think that the concept is important, if Wikipedia is ever to become an accepted encyclopaedia. It is like the difference between running the nightly build or CVS version of Firefox (or any other "free" software) compared to running a QA'd and numbered release build. The CVS build is usually OK, but no promises that any particular feature (article here) works as expected (contains correct information with no vandalism) at any particular moment. It's a trade-off between having the latest edits and having a reliable, but dated set. Whether that project is going about the exercise the right way is a different question. I'd agree with that assement. The WikiProject Canberra is certainly ahead, but Adelaide would have to be second behind it. Melbourne led in the early days, but it's essentially dormant now. Sydney's still chugging along, but is focusing on lists and similar. Perth is dominated by rail enthusiasts. I think we need to start a list of articles we would like to have in Wikipedia 1.0. Their selection criteria appears to be based on article quality, not article subject, so to get an article in, we need to make sure it's up to scratch. In my view, the criteria for WP:Adelaide and South Australia articles should be based on what we find ourselves talking to overseas (or interstate) friends, colleagues, tourists etc about. Waterfall Gully might be an excellent article, but travelling overseas, it's not a topic that comes up in conversation nearly as often as History of South Australia, Olympic Dam or Barossa Valley for example. --Scott Davis ^Talk 04:46, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

This is true. We should target the articles that would be of most interest to the reader (I'd love to see the Barossa Valley on the Main Page!). However, at present, we have a couple suburb articles very near FAC - we might as well push them through. TransAdelaide page

I'm preparing an update to the TransAdelaide page (with info on the new Glenelg tram vehicles) & noticed another contributor has added some info into the 2000 / 2100-class railcar section. The wording certainly needs, tidying up which I'm happy to do. But I also question what level of detail is needed in a WP article.

Specific detail like car 2005 is coupled to 2013 and 2007 is now painted yellow and listing every possible way of coupling the carriages together is OK for a railfan bulletin board. But I doubt this is really appropriate for Wikipedia.

This level of info can quickly become out-of-date and unreliable, unless author has (1) access to real time info on TransAdelaide's railcar deployment, and (2) motivation to keep Wikipedia page up-to-date.

Railway Stations or Interchanges ??

I've posted three new articles on the Bus/Rail Interchanges at Salisbury, Mawson Lakes and Noarlunga. I'll be adding Smithfield and Elizabeth in near future when I get out there for some photos.

Naming convention so far for rail stations has been "XXX railway station, Adelaide". For the larger Interchanges, I'm proposing naming the page "XXX Interchange" to be consistent with Adelaide Metro's policy in their signage, timetables and other publicity. For example - there is no Mawson Lakes station, it's Mawson Interchange. Same thing at Noarlunga and Salisbury. I don't know whether this will stuff up those elaborate Next Station devices that have been put into the railway station pages, hopefully not.

P.S. I've added South Australia to Salisbury page title since there are plenty of other Salisburys around the world. But not to Noarlunga Centre or Tea Tree Plaza, as there's unlikely ever to be ambiguity there!EnglishElectric 13:40, 14 June 2006 (UTC)

Adelaide Parks and Gardens

City of Norwood Payneham St. Peters

I just noticed that this page had been edited and moved to include the US full stop after "St". I was about to undo these changes, but it seems that the city name is actually "City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters" or possibly "City of Norwood, Payneham & St Peters". Everywhere in council literature I can find ( and in a rates notice ) its City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters with no comma or US full stop. All references to St Peters ( school names etc... ) miss the full stop.- Peripitus (Talk) 11:15, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

There are quite a few references including the comma, including the Local Government Association website, and it seems the meaning of the name requires a comma, but I woudl have thought we should use the name the council uses. Recent Update to Bus Routes

I think most are aware of the Recent Update to bus routes by Adelaide Metro to various routes such as the 243 now the M44 and the 241 bus not continuing on it's old route. With any articles containing information on old bus routes should be updated. I am currently making changes but I am most likely to make errors.
