Order of Canada

Thanks a bunch for reworking the Order of Canada page. However, I do wish to point something out to you. On the VAC website, the number of Members that are appointed yearly is 92. It has been listed before at 163, I think. I was wondering when any of that has been changed, and if so, then we should note it. I also would note that those who have been awarded the Order of Canada are eligable to use the Order motto and Order medal on their coat of arms, and we should show an example of an arms with those items on it. I also would show the different medals for the Officer and Member grades and the various suspension devices (the ribbon, the bow, etc). I am drawing ribbon bars for each one, though I do not know if those are used. I would also show the lapel pin worn by the people who are members of the Order. Also, the trivia section will be incorporated into a new section about the creation of the Order. I just want to find the Act that created the Order, who did it, when it was endorse by the Queen or Governor General (if at all). Hi - I made a list of users who've been around long enough to have made lots of edits but aren't admins. If you're at all interested in becoming an admin, can you please add an '*' immediately before your name in this list? Adminship?

Hi YUL89YYZ, thanks for helping recat the Canadian senator articles. By the way, I notice you are *way* overdue for an adminship nom... I would be pleased to nominate you, just give the word. Even if you are not particularly interested in admin duties, the rollback button is very convenient for dealing with vandalism....no reason why you shouldn't have it in your toolchest. That's fine, although I'm not sure that there is a "spotlight" on admins - for me it pretty much amounts to having the convenience of the rollback button, and the ability to pull off more complex page moves. Let me know if you ever reconsider. Cheers, Fawcett5 18:16, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

Canadian orders and decorations

Just so you know, I've moved your Canadian Awards category to Category:Canadian orders and decorations, for two reasons: (1) it's a bit more precise, and (2) there was already a Category:Canadian awards without the capital a, which may have led to some confusion between the two. Elizabeth Bowles-Lyon, CC

Hi

Not that I know what I'm talking about, but I was very confused to see the late Queen Mother listed as a C.C. under her Christian, maiden name. She was once the Queen Consort of Canada, and she was in any event married, so I would expect her to be listed under her regnal name, or (if the Order of Canada has gone democratic) at least as Elizabeth Bowles-Lyon Windsor, odd as that sounds. As I say, though, I'm an American, so I am clueless. Could explain this to me please? Thanks, Xoloz 05:12, 15 August 2005 (UTC)

Although I understand your reasons, I did make the change, mainly because I think "Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon" is not as widely known a name, but also out of a concern for protocol. She's under "E" now, which is appropriate, I think. Sorry to nitpick. Xoloz 04:01, 16 August 2005 (UTC)

Bob Welch

I notice you erroneously added The Honourable to the Bob Welch article. Please remember that provincial cabinet ministers are only entitled to be referred to as "The Honourble" while they are in office. Once they leave cabinet, they cease to be "The Honourable". This is also true for provincial premiers, however, from time to time premiers are sworn into the Privy Council thus being entitled to use "The Honourable" for life. Others, such as Jean Charest, are privy councilors by virtue of having been federal cabinet ministers. Homey 21:32, 20 August 2005 (UTC)

Hi again. I've just double-checked the official GG's Order of Canada website, using the Search tool at [[1]]. My mistake was thinking that 'Officer' was the senior award; it's 'Companion' which is senior -- and since he has both, he should correctly be listed as a Companion -- as you had it. Bringing Wikipedia to Toronto

I've been working on a bid to bring Wikimania 2006 to Toronto. I have contacted KMDI, an institute at the University of Toronto. They are very interested in partnering with us, and can get us a full range of U of T facilities for free. With this offer I think there is a very good chance of bringing Wikimania 2006 to Toronto. The only thing we currently lack are people willing to help out. I'm willing to do much of the work, but for the time being I am in Ottawa and having some people on the ground in Toronto will be necessary. We also need a number of people willing to assist at the actual event, likely the first weekend of August 2006. If you are interested in helping out sign up at Wikimania 2006/Toronto. Preliminary bids from various cities need to be made by Sept. 30, 2005, at which point a committee will choose which city gets to host the event. Court Templates

Hi YUL, do you think there is a way to tone down the court templates so that they don't become Tfd bait? They are especially obtrusive now when there is more than one of them on a page, and they are, in my opinion, much larger than they need to be.... Fawcett5 00:58, 1 October 2005 (UTC)

These look a bit better now, but I think the main problem is that each individuals name gets repeated a number of times, and so it takes up an awful lot of space. What about having two columns of four rows, and just listing each member along with the dates during which they served? I'd have a shot at it myself, but my html table layout skills are pretty lame. You may have a point, although I admit I still don't really like these templates. The Oliver Wendell Holmes ones are as big as the article itself. There is rather a lot of tempting red ink though, lets see what can be done about that... I've got a start with Robert Sedgewick (jurist). I'll probably go after the ones with DoCB entries first. "Emmigrate" is not a word

Sir: I regret to inform you that "emmigrate", "emmigrant", etc. are not English words. I found some busy-work today by fixing this typo throughout Wikipedia. Your name shows up repeatedly when I ask the question, "Who spelled this wrong to begin with?" I also see that various other people have been editing your articles to fix up the spelling of this word. Um, could you please adopt the standard spelling? Emigrate is, in fact, a word. It means to leave a country, basically, the only difference between emigrate and imigrate is point of view. For example, if a Cuban leaves for the US, then he would be an emigrant from a Cuban point of view and an imigrant from an American point of veiw. However, it only has one "M", if that's what you're speaking of.

You'll love this, I think...the last anon user (different IP number than the others) to cast a vote in the Alan Shefman AFD did it immediately after an edit to Josh Cooper, a losing Conservative candidate in the 2004 election in Thornhill.

I think the proper way to name is the persons name "John Harvey (Colonel)" rather than "Sir John Harvey". This way it goes on the "John Harvey (disambiguation)" page.

Sap -> Tree sap

Hi YUL89YYZ - there's a problem with this disambiguation - sap is found in all plants, not just trees; disambiguating to tree sap is resulting in some references to sap of plants which are not trees being linked there. I notice that you have a lot of fair use images on your user page (according to this report, 143 of them on User:YUL89YYZ/images/DVD covers). You should know that, in accordance with Wikipedia:Fair use#Fair use policy, you can't display these images on user pages. Not so fast! This is not under Crown copyright. I've found more about the photographer, who worked as a professional protrait photographer until 1949. So, unless he took the image in that year, it would indeed be in the public domain in Canada. Now, to show that it also was in the public domain in the U.S., we need to show that it was taken before 1946. Maybe we still have a fighting chance... Lupo 16:16, 28 February 2006 (UTC)
