Freedom Monument (Riga)

To get rid of a redlink in this article I have made a stub for the Latvian Ministry of Defence, for which I have used the spelling "Defence" (with a "c"). I mention this to you to make the point that this is not because I am trying to be a British-spelling chauvinist - I have tried to respect the spelling in the rest of the article, which I have just copyedited - but because that is what the Ministry calls itself on its own website. Good luck with your bid for GA status for this article - you have put a huge amount of work into it. HeartofaDog 12:55, 13 May 2007 (UTC)

Corruption

Corruption exists in many varied forms, with political corruption being the most common type referred to, as this dissertation focuses on this stream of corruption as well as judicial corruption, public service corruption, business to business corruption and other main types of this form of abuse.

The Cassell Concise Dictionary defines the term ‘corruption’ as the adverbial form of the noun corrupt; it then very briefly describes eight different interpretations of the word corruption, of which not all will be useful for later use in this work:

Yes, but editing articles to highlight that one is corrupt, especialy if you delete valid content in the process still violates WP:NPOV and makes Wikipedia corrupt. Fair use image use

I removed two fair use images from your userbox page [1] and you restored them [2]. Please note that Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria item #9 prohibits the use of copyrighted, fair use imagery on any page other than actual articles. Use on userpages is not permitted. I've re-removed the images [3]. Please do not re-add them or any other fair use images to that page. If you have any questions about this, I'd be happy to answer. Thanks, for pointing that out, it didn't occure to me. Since another image I used apparently was deleted and I was replacing it, I got edit conflict and since my mind was preocupied with that image I assumed that your edit has something to do with it (given that I took it from real userbox it most likely was used on plenty userpages) and pasted my content without carefully looking at it, sorry.---- Xil/talk 23:26, 22 June 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading Image:Oskars_Kalpaks.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, then you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. Why such accusement?

Hi, Braliukas. I haven't ruined the box - it was classifying falsely Baltic languges, but tryed to correct mistake. Please sign your posts on talk pages with four tildes ~~~~ it makes it easier to follow disscusion and to find you. Now as for infobox - what you changed is classification of languages, it is meant to show to what larger language groups languages in question belong, so by simply changing balto-slavic to baltic you assert that Baltic languages is subgroup of some larger Baltic group, which simply isn't true, thus it is misleading, however, as you seem to be awere, there are several scientists who belive in exsistance of balto-slavic and it is valid and well-known oppinion. So I undid your edit because you made tehnical mistake, which might have been misleading, not because I don't agree with you (but I don't have particular oppinion on balto-slavic as well). Thanks, but this was then misclasification, but not ruination. Your articles about culture are really nice. I'm interested in Dnepr-Daugava water road influences to Baltic cultures and the most interesting for me is how do there some Lithuanian lakes not far from Daugava obtained... Greek names - even 15 Liminas (limen - lake) and Taramas (wawing in Greek). Herodotos wrote about some Greek emporias - market towns by Dnepr. One of them was Gelonas ecscavated near Vorskla river not far from Kiev. So, I would like to know - how those towns-emporias dissapeared during persian, asian, gothic invasions? Are there some not understandable in Latvian lake names but clear in Greek in Latgala?78.62.22.250 20:26, 16 July 2007 (UTC)

I don't know, there are plenty names in Latvia that are not understandable, I don't know greek so I can't tell just by looking in map. If you are realy interested here is lakes of Latgale in tour guide and database of lakes in Latvia, both are in Latvian, but I think you'll get the idea, in the last site there are three search fields on the top - (from top to bottom) first field is exact name (it will sugest you names as you type), second is part of name (so you can enter root you are looking for) and the last one is adminstrative regions---- Xil/talk 14:25, 17 July 2007 (UTC)

About Latvian military history

If you're the one who expands the WikiProject Latvia, I just thought to ask your opinion if the articles of Voldemars Veiss and 15th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS (1st Latvian) should also included into it? I mean, as I'm not an adminstrator myself, I doubt my authority to do those additions.

Found a webpage in Latvian about Voldemars Veiss -http://www.jzb.lv/index.php?1&44&command=detail&recid=1213 . It appears to contain information about his pre-WW2 career, so I thought to ask you if you or someone else fluent in that language could translate it and add that to the Wikipedia article?

Singing Revolution

Some time ago I taged a sentence "Lithuania was the first of the Baltic States where the movement now known as the Singing Revolution appeared." in Singing Revolution article with {{when}} now I see that you have replaced this by a reference. Good, however this is not what was needed - please clerify what date exactly it was, if it is given in your source. You see the article states that in Latvia and Estonia it started in 1987, for example, first open protest in Latvia took place on 14 June, 1987, but first Lithuania-related year mentioned there is 1988 -- Xil/talk 17:32, 5 September 2007 (UTC)

The source only mentions Lithuania was first, but doesn't actually give a date. So you may need to apply the {{when}} tag. Martintg 05:15, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Lāsma Kauniste

Thank you for editing my article on Lāsma Kauniste. In my research before writing that article, I also read that her maiden name Avotiņa is not even a Latvian name. I do not know if that is true, but, either way, I did not consider that little fact(?) worth mentioning. However, I did want to ask you about your comment Latvians don't have patronyms and it is not correct russian transliteration anyway. I found her name mentioned in Russian as Ласма Хермановна Каунисте. I guess the "correct" English transliteration of the patronym Хермановна would be Khermanovna. But I am wondering where it came from if Latvians do not use patronyms. Was it something that was "assigned" to her when "Soviet-Russianising" her name? Do you think the Хермановна should be removed from the Russian spelling of her name? Because now, it looks a bit strange since Lāsma Kauniste does not completely correspond with Ласма Хермановна Каунисте. Also, I hope I used the correct Latvian spelling of her name as Lāsma Avotiņa. Freedom Monument

Hi Xil, I'd just like to let you know that I finished the translation of Freedom Monument (Riga) into Esperanto : see eo:Monumento de Libereco (Rigo). I took the liberty of adding a few pictures and a little section about the euro coin, but basically the whole text is a faithful translation of your own work. Well, I'm afraid I really am the only one responsible for this. Be aware though that I proposed Latvia as our next "Country of the month", a common project aiming to create/improve all the articles related to a specific country, because our main article about Latvia is currently very poor.
