Jean-Mandé Sigogne

I hadn't really intended to translate it all, but once I got going I thought what the heck and did the lot, with the express intent that another editor could pick out relevant pieces. As I hope I made VERY clear, the translation is very much a first pass. You can probably see faults in process (I don't mean particular errors of translation) and any advice you have like tht I should be willing to hear.

I don't see the harm of preserving the "whole translation" – marked very clearly that it is a rough translation – somewhere in the article's talk page (or as a dangling sub-article).

The two bad traits I notice with myself are:

1. At first not putting things in natural English word order. Articles such as this tend in the French to have what I find to be rather a flowery style with interminable subclauses all back-to-front (from an English point of view) I don't just mean thinks like noun-adjective order which is relatively trivial but that you have to kinda take a deep breath and run at a sentence which necer ends and remember all the qualifying bits along the way before finally ending up with a bump against a noun (or verb). This French style also tends to use synonyms a lot, so e.g. Sigogne becomes the priest, the pastor, the vicar, the curate etc, and this is a bad habit in English, in that people (including the translator) wonder if they are the same person or not. After a while, my brain is kinda running in French and it is only when I come back to it afresh that it sounds like very odd English to me (though the words may be right).
2. Perhaps sticking too literally to the French translation (or, in the alternate, dithering over what word # to choose.), mainly when I know the French word but can't find an exact equivalent in English.
3. Not being able to decide when to remove the foreign-language tags. If one goes too soon the article kinda gets lost to the world. Similarly say the J-M Sigogne article is still marked as being in French, though the simplest solution would be just to cut out the French now, that would seem on the whole counterproductive until the English is more sensible. That being said, there is a small satisfaction when removing the the foreign language tag and if someone else does it (IGF saying "it's not French any more" etc) it's kinda a disappointment after what is often a lot of hard work.

Some good traits I hope are

1. wikifying pretty well i.e. not just translating the plain text but adding links, conversions, infoboxes, categories getting reasonably towards MOS, etc etc.

So I think my general process is like this:

1. Try to get the sense and individual words/phrases translated without worrying too much about word order (or whether the text is worth translating at all), so that one is not constantly reaching for a dictionary.
2. Minimally reorder into more natural English word order, adding, removing and changing words to a suitable level of formality.
3. Wikify the text with e.g. links and conversions.
4. Wikify on a larger scale with e.g. infoboxes, categories, section reordering.
5. Remove tags for foreign language etc, go to PNT saying it is done etc, usually for it just to be deleted as "done" with not the slightest thankyou (I know the PNT ?admins are busy people, but a brief comment saying thanks before it being deleted would mean a lot).

Let me know if you think I could improve this strategy. Of course if one has the original's author and is essentially taking over at the second step of the processauthor, as I did yesterday for Sulysap for example, it's a lot easier since one is essentially a mechanic and someone to bounce their prose off, but once something reaches PNT it is (a) pretty much doomed if it does not get translated and (b) unlikely - though occasional it happens - that the original translator/author is around to ask questions to: which is partly the challenge with PNT I find, and why I perhaps find it more enjoyable than just pulling articles from the translation pages (also, that one simply gets more variety).

I am sorry to make this longer. I should probably work it up into a little essay. I am not saying I am right, and would certainly be glad of any advice or a reply saying how you go about translating; I am just saying that is roughly how I go about it.

So in short, that is why I translated the lot in rough: I can then leave it to other editors to decide which bits are worth translating farther. The only thing I really ask is that the translation is seen for what it is i.e. a very rough first pass, and not unduly criticised as a "bad" translation (which considering how long a "good" translation takes – cf. professional translation rates – nobody can expect in the relatively brief time it takes).

As far as the POV and references etc in J-M S., and that it is to some degree about Acadians not himself, I think we can polish that out, probably, once the translation is more advanced. I probably have a more generous view about it being not about him but the Acadians; it seems fairly closely intertwined. For example, the lead does not mention that he was an exile in london for 7 years, so you have only yourself to blame there (I assume)!

About References and Plot templates

Sorry man, but this templates exist for some reason, and i believe that it is use them in articles that does not have references and has long plot sections. I believe that this templates help to improve wikipedia quality and i believe that is my duty use them.

As you can see, my english its too bad, so i can not help improving articles editing them, but i can help marking those articles.

Hi again man, just to say that i use references template to mark those articles that does not have references about the book, not only about real facts descrided in the text, as its said here. This articles are about books, but in ths articles is not information ABOUT the book itself. I believe that references to the books are required.

This guy ElmerHomero is just going thru the sci-fi novel category in reverse alphabetical order, adding his tags. As far as I can see, this is just an effort to generate edit credits on his part. Hi man, that is the problem: There are NOT bibliographical data to validate. Where this book was printed? editorial? pages? ISBN? editions? This information is necesary in order to validate the book existence. An amazon link or google books work too. :P

List of Tibetan writers

Hello - Isn't List of Tibetan writers you created supposed to be a list of important or noteworthy Tibetan writers ~ not a list of minor authors or of lamas who may be noteworthy themselves but not have written anything gernerally considered to be of great significance? Some of the names included in this list (particularly in the 20th century group) have made only minor literary contributions in Tibetan. Others are better known as compilers of others work rather than as original writers. The list probably needs some serious cleaning up or pruning. Also no sources are cited - a list like this needs citations from objective sources.

I also wonder whether Tertons should be included in the list? - It is problematic since they claim their works are not their own but rediscovered works of Padmasambhava. It is also questionable whether "Foreign writers with Tibetan names" should be included if they are not at least ethnically Tibetan or have not written anything in the Tibetan language.

Hey I keep trying to get this article deleted but apparently it has some serious defenders. I am guessing that they are not familiar with even basic scholarly methods for determining what constitutes a reliable source. FYI, it seems that the Austrian source is not in the 1831 but in the 1837 issue of Östreichische militärische Zeitschrift full text. I checked the index page of the 1831, nothing close (that said, I didn't read it - my eyeballs aren't fit for viewint blackletter print for more than a few minutes). IHT?

Hi Xanthoxyl, I was wondering why you reverted two changes I made to update the IHT site. The number of print sites has grown from 35 to 40. (See http://www.ihtinfo.com/about/about.html, and then click on "circulation and distribution). And the move-over to a new combined NYT website was completed a couple years ago. Just curious. AWB and contractions

While contractions (didn't, don't etc) are discouraged on Wikipedia, they are not "typos" and should not be marked as such. (AWB Rule 4: Avoid making insignificant or inconsequential edits.) Furthermore, you are sometimes altering direct quotations! [1] [2] Please check your work so far and revert where necessary. Xanthoxyl ^< 10:33, 26 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize for the corrections in direct quotes, AWB RegExTypoFix is supposed to automatically skip any contractions in quotes. The examples you gave had either no quote marks, or quotes that spanned across multiple paragraphs, which must have confused the algorithm. I apologize for those mistakes, that was negligence on my part for not paying closer attention as I was editing.

However, I disagree that contractions should not be expanded using WP:AWB. On WP:AWB#Rules of use, examples of inconsequential edits include:

• Only adding or removing some white space
• Moving a stub tag
• Converting some HTML to Unicode
• Removing underscores from links (unless they are bad links)
• Bypassing a redirect
• ...or something equally trivial.

According to WP:Basic copyediting, "Unless part of a quotation, contractions (don't, can't, etc.) should be changed to non-contracted forms (do not, cannot, etc.)."... This causes me to disagree that such changes are inconsequential. Also, the WP:AWB/Typos project recommends using the [[WP:AWB/T|Typo fixing]] summary for any corrections identified from the RegExTypoFix database, so that false positives can be identified and reported. I'm not sure how else to tag the edits, other than just typing "clean up," which is much less descriptive and robust.

Animation of long division

Hi, Xanthoxyl. In January 2009 you created an animation of long division, which appears at the top of the long division article. However, I think the animation goes way too fast to be followed (even by me, and I know long division). Could you slow it down by a factor of about ten? The current delay is 0.4 seconds (2½ frames per second), so a 10x slowdown would leave a gap of 4 seconds between each frame. If you like I can upload a half-speed or third-speed version. I think a four-second or even a six-second delay would be excellent. Right now this video is the best demonstration of the technique that appears anywhere in the article, so if you slow it down to use it as a teaching device instead of just an illustration, it will be a big help to the article as a whole.

Hello, Xanthoxyl. You recently reverted Mistakes were made to an older version, noting in your edit summary "merge apparently not completed". I merged content from 'Mistakes were made' to Non-apology apology per a discussion I initiated in 2010, though as you probably noticed I did not keep the specific usage examples. Masakatsu Morita and seppuku

Hi. In your recent edit here to the Masakatsu Morita article, you removed the maintenance tags I had added highlighting the valid concerns I have about the wording concerning seppuku following changes made by editor みしまるもも. You say that there is no English definition of seppuku, which I find strange, since the Merriam Webster Dictionary clearly defines it as "ritual suicide", the Collins English Dictionary also similarly defines it as "ritual suicide", as do a large number of online dictionaries. That this definition may differ from how it is used in Japanese (something みしまるもも does not seem to appreciate) is not especially relevant to an article written in English on English Wikipedia. The article as it stands now says in the opening that he committed seppuku, but then at the end says that he was beheaded, something that I and most other native English readers will consider as contradictory. If you cannot address this apparent contradiction, then the maintenance tags will need to be re-added. --DAJF (talk) 08:31, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Seppuku" is a Japanese word referring to a certain group of suicide rituals. There is no specific English definition of seppuku independent of the Japanese definition. Most English-speakers understand it to refer to cutting oneself deeply in the abdomen in the context of intending to die. This is precisely what Morita did, and as he immediately afterwards died by a pre-arranged coup de grâce, his suicide did not fail. Understand that red links are NOT forbidden. Since you didn't leave any edit comments (and an experienced editor such as yourself should know better), I was left with no idea behind the revert and since my edits are VERY rarely reverted, my curiosity was piqued. Only comment I have is that there is really no difference between a red or non-existant link in a template such as this - both indicate that there is no Wiki page. My style is simply to prefer to link only what actually exists as there are many times when an editor "intends" to create the linked page, life gets in the way, and we are left looking at a red link that never goes away. Vladimir Nabokov

Hello, You seem to have some concern over the legitimacy of the detail I posted in the Vladimir Nabokov article regarding the intricacies of his relationship with his uncle. You may wish reread the source I posted as it does specifically mention these details of his favoritism by uncle and the illicit sexual nature. Also, it is not "a dubious claim". The article was not written by some second rate speculative blogger. The author of the article is a well established writer and went to great lengths to research the details mentioned in it. He interviewed first hand sources such as Nabokov friends and surviving family. In fact I have previously contemplated in the past based on this article adding a section to the Nabokov wiki article describing the nature of Vladimir's views on homosexuality and the role it took in his life and works. No, we won't be edit-warring any more, as I've removed the blatant, homophobic lie you inserted. The fact that an uncle dandled him on his knee a few times and he felt uncomfortable doesn't mean that they had a "sordid sexual relationship", and you have an incredible nerve thinking that you could distort a directly linked source (which does nothing other than quote Speak, Memory) so completely without anyone noticing. • Well you are certainly impressive coming up with the idea that its homophobic when clearly it states the relationship went well beyond the realm of comfort. Sexual abuse last time I checked is as sordid as it gets. The author uses the quote from Speak Memory as part evidence as Nabokov drew from life when writing. Not only this but the author of the article SPOKE TO FAMILY AND FRIENDS OF NABOKOV. I can't revert without crossing 3RR. I've put my point of view up on the talk page. I stand 100% by my assertion that it is a homophobic distortion because it baselessly implies that Rukavishnikov was a rapist and that Nabokov accepted a kind of quid pro quo payment for an earlier "relationship". And this is equally absurd that you make such deductions because the article itself as a whole is sympathetic to homosexuality and decries Nabokov proclivity to be homophobic. Invitation to Adelaide Wikipedia Users Group meetings

Hi, in case you're not already aware of it, a group of Adelaide Wikipedians has been meeting on a monthly basis since April, with the aim of improving the scope and quality of articles on South Australian topics. We meet at UniSA's City West campus, and our 23 July meeting will have a guest speaker from the National Trust of SA.

This coming Sunday, 6 July, we will be holding our first Edit-a-thon. This will be an opportunity for new editors to come and learn either basic or more advanced editing from very experienced wikipedians, so if you know anyone who would like to get some practice, please let them know - and beginners will be very welcome. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge!
