Posting at talk pages

Just an FYI to check the dates of talk page comments... no need to respond to something a person posted more than a year ago... usually those issues have been resolved a long time ago.  ;) Montanabw(talk) 03:42, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ok thanks. I did make a comment on the National Velvet talk page. Someone was saying that in the book the horse was named 'Pie' because the original owner called him a pirate. He was called 'Piebald' because he was a piebald. I just read the book a month or so ago and remember the part where the characters were discussing the name of the horse. White Arabian mare (talk) 16:17, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The "pirate" was used in the movie because they cast a solid-colored horse in the role. LOL! Montanabw(talk) 04:43, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes that's funny. Our neighbor refuses to watch movies she's read the books for because "they ruin it when they turn it into a movie". Ha ha White Arabian mare (talk) 15:04, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What's happened to the horse editors?

When I'm wandering around Wikipedia I like to check out other contributors' user pages. However, I've noticed that many of them haven't been updated within the past several months. What happened to these users? White Arabian mare (talk) 22:12, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We don't necessarily spend a lot of time on our user pages, though the talk pages can be pretty lively. However, a lot of WPEQ members have gone inactive, only about three or four of us contribute regularly; the rest of the action is at WP:Horse racing right now, and to a lesser extent, WP:Veterinary medicine. But if you post at WT:EQUINE, a few lurkers will probably pop by. I'd be glad to help you learn how to edit WP and point you to some articles that need a lot of help if you want to work on them! Montanabw(talk) 04:49, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ok thanks. What are some articles that need work? I actually created 4 articles yesterday, for books I've read and liked. I'd be glad to help with more horse stuff. White Arabian mare (talk) 15:02, 20 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ping me at talk and I'll try to help you out! I see the deletion police are already after you, but you are dead on that Black Allen needs an article! Montanabw(talk) 01:45, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks. White Arabian mare (talk) 02:12, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

pretend its a horse

i really love horses and could use your help with telling me how to take care of one i just got a black stallion and palimino

Leaping tiger (talk) 20:32, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well first you have to feed your horse. Find out what it's been eating from whoever you got it from and buy that. Make sure you don't feed it too much. Give it constant access to water, as much water as it wants. Get a hoof pick and pick the dirt out of its feet every day. Brush it with a soft body brush every day too, but don't get near its eyes. Once every week or so, comb the tangles from its mane and tail with a human hairbrush (they don't pull the hair out like combs do). If the horse is in a pasture, you don't have to worry about exercising it, but if it's in a stall it will have to be taken out and led around like a dog (don't let the rope wrap around your hand or it might pull your fingers off if the horse jerks). Or you can let it play in the arena for a couple of hours if you have one. If you're talking about the kitten in the picture, they are a whole lot easier to take care of. Just get some kitten food at the grocery store, along with some food and water bowls and a litter pan and some kitty litter. Feed it a couple of small meals a day and give it unlimited water. You may want to check with a vet to see what shots it needs. The rabies shot is necessary but there are a couple more it could probably use too. White Arabian mare (talk) 20:49, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Forgot to say that on a horse, they need their hooves trimmed by a farrier at least every 2 months, sometimes more. Also they need their teeth floated down by a vet once a year, and there are about five shots they need annually. The ones my horse gets are rabies, tetanus, West Nile virus, rhino, and flu. See the following articles:

That user just got blocked for being a troll, so don't get too excited... I think it's an existing user just trying to bother people by posting to our talk pages. Montanabw(talk) 22:44, 26 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Probably so, I was about to go tell them it's alright to post that kind of thing once because they're new but if they did it again I was going to erase it and not reply. Somebody saved me a trip. I saw that user's page and it looked like they were a young kid or just a plain troll.White Arabian mare (talk) 23:02, 26 August 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare[reply]

Need help with Black Allan (horse)

I created a page for Black Allan, but Savonneux (not sure how to spell that name) redirected it. Black Allan sired the entire Tennessee Walking Horse breed, so I feel that a page on him is needed. I went back and added some content (I spent an entire year studying Tennessee Walking Horses), but if you have any additional info about him PLEASE feel free to add it. White Arabian mare (talk) 21:45, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well it's pronounced Savon-ou :P I redirected it because what was on the page was already in Tennessee Walking Horse. It could've been deleted as a A:10 (articles that cover material already in other articles) otherwise. I don't doubt the horse is at least a little notable (see WP:GNG for information on this). Also it might help to think about this as there is an article on TWHs: is this horse notable for any reason other than being the original sire for TWHs? Try looking on google, google books, books you might own.
Just trying to help--Savonneux (talk) 22:51, 21 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I did some cleanup on the article. It's a clear keep. Montanabw(talk) 01:54, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, thanks-I was surprised to see that it wasn't already up, so I added it. There's another Walker we may consider adding: Strolling Jim, the first ever national champion. There is a wonderful video of him on YouTube, from before the Big Lick was ever thought up. I don't know much about him except that he is buried in Shelbyville, TN. May do some looking into it tomorrow. It's too late tonight. White Arabian mare (talk) 02:11, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ways to improve Serafix

Hi, I'm Crystallizedcarbon. White Arabian mare, thanks for creating Serafix!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Please add references from reliable sources to the article to meet our verifiability and notablility requirements.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse. Crystallizedcarbon (talk) 21:30, 24 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, yes, I had trouble finding anything about Serafix on Google (nothing about height, how many foals he sired, etc) but decided to go ahead and create the article anyway. I'll do some more research later and see if I can add to it.White Arabian mare (talk) 21:41, 24 August 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare[reply]

I found a few things, will post links at the article. Also have an image online we can use. See if you can swipe the formatting of the pedigrees at articles like Khemosabi and use http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/serafix to fill it in. Montanabw(talk) 18:14, 25 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ok thanks. I will check them out.White Arabian mare (talk) 20:18, 25 August 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare[reply]

Here's another one!

Thank you! I don't think I saw that one.White Arabian mare (talk) 00:32, 18 August 2015 (UTC)White Arabian mare[reply]

More missing horses

In addition to the stub list I posted at my talk (see above) here are some "redlinks" of articles on major horses we haven't created yet and are well worth looking at (hint: Best not to do ones on living animals unless super-duper notable (like American Pharoah, or at least run them past WPEQ before trying):

Arabians

Though already mentioned at Sheila Varian, these two are probably significant enough for a breakout article of their own:

For examples of a "good enough" article you can use as a template for syntax and formatting, try Khemosabi or Mesaoud. See also Category:Arabian and part-Arabian horses for what's already been done. For an example of a featured article (best example), look at Barbara L or Go Man Go. Montanabw(talk) 03:27, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Others

Just ideas. Most of the major Thoroughbreds are at least started, though they have over 3000 stubs at WikiProject horse racing Category:Stub-Class Horse racing articles. Have fun! Montanabw(talk) 03:27, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I will do some research on them. Arabians are very rare in my area so most of my Arabian experience has been over the web. However, I've heard tons about Midnight Sun, and I've actually ridden a Smart Little Lena daughter. :) White Arabian mare (talk) 20:39, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wrote the Midnight Sun article. It nearly gave me a stroke to see his picture on the site I used for research; he was almost identical to a reserve WGC Walker at the barn I learned to ride at! Undoubtedly the horse I knew was one of Midnight Sun's many descendants, although I can't find out because I don't know his registered name. White Arabian mare (talk) 21:33, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

AWESOME! You are off to a good start as a wikipedia editor! I added some links and templates, feel free to swipe the syntax, the hands template is particularly nice to use, you just type {{hands|15}} and it automatically fomats it as 15 hands (60 inches, 152 cm) - all measurement conversions and stuff! The {{convert}} template can do the same thing for weight- giving you imperial and metric measurements, handy for our colleagues in Europe. Montanabw(talk) 03:19, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ok thanks. I didn't know how to add the centimeters conversion and I'm TERRIBLE at metric measurements. White Arabian mare (talk) 14:45, 23 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
