It's time for 9

Just letting you know that, after another of my articles (Anna Wintour, if you must know) gained GA status I have decided the time is ripe to make my first-ever GA self-nom (well, partial, since you helped out and will be duly acknowledged), U.S. Route 9 in New York.

You hoped this would be the first GA to come out of WP:NYSR. Now we'll find out. I expect it will be reviewed soon as it seems to me that turnover on road articles is faster (right now only one, A500 road, is awaiting review.

County route sign

10 junction limit?

On the Kentucky Route 80 article, you say that the change to add East Kentucky junctions is invalid because of a "10 junction limit in infoboxes". Where does that limit come from, and what are the criteria? Should I select a couple of western KY junctions to remove? Clearly, the junction with KY 15 (and the Daniel Boone Parkway) in Hazard is a major junction, even if it isn't with a US Highway, and I would think that at least one end of the multiplex with US 460/23 needs to be mentioned. Not trying to rock the boat -- just wanting to help. --Robertb-dc 16:27, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

The "10 junction limit" has been an unwritten rule for a while across USRD, and was just recently formally added to the infobox standards. The criteria varies by project and, admittedly, by editor, but my belief is that a major junction is any junction with an Interstate, U.S. route, parkway, or a limited-access state highway. Unfortunately, in the case of KY 80, this resulted in 32 potential major junctions. I whittled it down to 10 by examining each junction and keeping only the junctions that illustrated the progression of KY 80 across Kentucky. It wasn't my intent to exclude eastern Kentucky - it just ended up that way.

IMHO, neither junction with the Hal Rogers Parkway is major because the parkway is little more than a parallel highway to KY 80 and, as such, provides very little in terms of KY 80's location. One end of the US 23/460 concurrency (preferably the western end) is a possibility. --TMF ^Let's Go Mets - Stats 16:55, 26 May 2007 (UTC)

U.S. Route 48 in West Virginia

I am going to begin cleanup at U.S. Route 48 in West Virginia tonight and nominate it for GA status. My primary concern at the moment is fixing the references (shifting them out of the period) because that has irked some GA processes in the past (although it is rather trivial). Kentucky route lengths

TMF, thanks for the charts showing the lengths for Kentucky routes. You gave a link to a source, but which specific link on that page gives the information you came up with? Or do you have to piece it together county by county? I tried doing that, but some of my info may be off, particularly where a road duplexes with another. Thanks! On the page that's linked, I use the "Official Milepoint Route Log Report" in Excel format. What I had to do was download the file for each of the twelve districts and splice them together to make a single spreadsheet with 12 pages (in Excel terms, one workbook and 12 sheets). Recently, I've begun to refactor the log by route, making it easier to decipher a route's length. But, for the routes that I've yet to split out, I have to search each page for the right route and the right county (a real PITA). I also have a map open while I read the logs so that I'm able to match the log with reality, which helps me to figure out the locations and lengths of overlaps. Unfortunately, the expansive nature of Kentucky transportation leaves my map well out of date (as some routes are either missing or signed with a different, older number on my map). But, back to your original question, yes, it's necessary to splice the route together county-by-county, whether using the route log or the SPRS sheets.

It's good to know that there are other editors interested in working on Kentucky routes. Let me know if you need any help with a route, reading the route logs, or anything related to Kentucky roads. --TMF ^Let's Go Mets - Stats 04:11, 14 June 2007 (UTC)

I noticed you reverted my edit to remove the road signs for county routes on NY 115 with the excuse that "they will be made eventually". PASH newsletter - Issue 001

The Pennsylvania State Highways Newsletter Issue 1 – June 16, 2007

Issue #1 The first issue of the WP:PASH newsletter recognizes all of the good articles the project has produced.

Project News After State Route 1002 (Lehigh County, Pennsylvania) was selected as the project featured article for June, it was listed as a Good Article. Thanks to everyone who helped the article. SR 1002 is the first quadrant route to reach GA status and the sixth article from PASH, with Interstate 95 in Pennsylvania, Schuylkill Expressway, Interstate 476, Pennsylvania Route 39, and Pennsylvania Route 145 being the other five. Interstate 476 is undergoing a peer review, a future featured article candidate. Feedback and ideas to improve the article are needed. Nominations for next month's featured article are needed. To-do list See User:Myselfalso/PA Routes for the status of PA Routes 1 to 100. Create articles for all routes and expand existing articles.

Featured Member The featured member of the month is Vishwin60. He has been an important member of the project for a long time and has writen the Pennsylvania Route 31 article. Thank you Vishwin, for helping out WP:PASH.

Interstate 110 (Florida)

I have been editing the Interstate 110 (Florida) page today and I noticed your tags:

- What needs to be cleaned up? I was the original author of this article and I've spent a while today making it more concise and neutral while adding new information. Please give me examples of what needs to be cleaned up. - I know the article doesn't cite sources, but I grew up in Pensacola and just happen to know all of these facts. I could be considered a "primary source". First of all, a person is never a reliable source for any article whatsoever. Reliable sources in this context are state, county, and local maps, GIS data for Florida, the mileage reports, and national data of these sorts. (→zelzany - review) 00:01, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Interstate 875

I that article really deleted? Because I couldn't tell if that article still needs to exist or not. Pretty much of the article is probably speculations. if it's from Kurumi it's not a reliable source. Pretty much of Kurumi is obviously is original source. The website is most likely create by Scott Oblevsky he's probably a college student. I found from his website of I-338 and I-980 will ever take over the CA-24 alignment to Walnut Creek. Monroe County Routes on exit lists

Hi! I noticed you removed my edits to various interstates listing Monroe County Routes with their accompanying road names on exit lists with the reason that "they are unsinged". Well, they are still there. I think personally that, while not notable enough for junctioning mention, if we are going to list their local names anyways, we might as well note that they are county routes. But no one except roadgeeks know that they are county routes. County routes in Monroe County are not the same as CRs in Dutchess County, or any other county that signs them as such. If I called Elmwood Avenue CR 87, I'd get a really strange look from whoever I'm talking to. On second thought, I feel they should be there. We state reference routes, which are unsigned. And yes, they do have markers every 10th mile, but so do the routes in Monroe County. So, I, in retrospect, feel they should not have been deleted. Smartyshoe 14:55, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Help with vandalism

I have been having a problem with IP vandals adding incorrect info at Trans-Texas Corridor. One was blocked earlier today, but another has popped up adding the same wrong info. Can you put a protect on it to protect against IP/new users? Thanks. --Holderca1 18:50, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

An important letter

Dear roads editor,

You may have noticed some changes at WP:USRD lately. Some of them, like the cleanup templates and the stub templates, have been astounding and great. Unfortunately, others have been disturbing.

This has become evidenced by the departure of a few prominent editors at USRD, a few RFC's, and much fighting among USRD editors.

After the second RFC, many of us found the opportunity to take a step away from Wikipedia for a while--as a self-imposed wikibreak, or possibly on vacation.

The result of such introspection was that many of us were placing ourselves in a "walled garden" and on a self-imposed pedestal of authority over the roads department. Also, we were being hostile to a few users who were not agreeing with us.

In fact, IRC has been the main incarnation of this "walled garden." Decisions have been made there to conduct grudges and prejudices against a few valued USRD users with poor justification.

For this, we have come to apologize. We have come to ask your forgiveness.

In addition to this, we hope to work as one USRD team from now on and to encourage cooperation instead of the promotion of interests.

All users are welcome to collaborate on IRC, the newsletter, or anywhere else at USRD.

In the future, please feel free to approach us about any issues you may have.

The articles I think need to be deleted and/or redirected:

1. County Route 97 (Rockland County, New York) - Road not notable enough and not even known to most drivers.
2. County Route 63 (Suffolk County, New York) - A 1.6 mile road, no notablilities about it.
3. County Route 43 (Suffolk County, New York) - Already a stub, nothing notable about it.
4. All those Florida County Roads - Nothing notable here.

County Route 63 (Suffolk County, New York) used to be part of County Route 51 (Suffolk County, New York). As for the Florida County Roads, the fact that so many of them either were, or are linked to Florida State Roads makes them noteable. ---- DanTD 16:16, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Rockland Routes

First off, I just wanted you to know I'm the one who created all of those pages. I know your in charge of NY routes in particular, so you have to make changes to keep consistancy and that makes sense. But I do want you to know all those pages are first-hand accounts and 100% accurate. So, if you have any questions, please ask me. I live in the county.

I do have a couple of things I wanted to address with you though:

Why change the main page from even, odd sections to 1-49, 50-99, 100+? Separating by even/odd means you don't have to put S/N, W/E everytime. Thats why I separated them between even and odd. I used that space for mileage. I know you'd like to keep the county routes pages consistent. But how many of them are completely down like the Rockland Routes?

Also, please don't delete the page for CR 97. It exists on county maps as CR 97 and is signed just like the other 60+ routes. The county signed it, and I went out there and got its mileage, pictures and other info. It would be like deleting an Interstate Highway page because its lightly traveled.

But other than that, thanks for editing some of my additions into wiki standards. I know it takes alot of time, so thank you! Airtuna08 01:51, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

I changed the page because, as you said, to keep consistency with the other county road pages, most of which are complete. I'd rather see the routes listed in numerical order than in the method it was previously. Using that page for mileposts would, in my opinion, defeat the purpose of the individual county road pages, as most of them have little more than the termini, direction, and length. Also, mileposts are, to me, far too specific for a list page. No CR or state route list page that I've seen, includes mileage totals.

As for the CR 97 note, I have no plans to delete it right now; however, your argument implies that a county route and an Interstate Highway are equally notable, when that is most definitely not the case.

Fair enough. If you need any help compiling info on the other NY counties that don't have pages let me know. And I understand county routes aren't interstates. I'm a pretty big road buff. Re: Suffolk County maps for references

I wish I could cite individual maps, and didn't have to use the a generic statement such as "Old Hagstroms Long Island and Suffolk County Maps" or "Old Hagstroms Road Maps and Altases" and such. That's part of the problem with being too far away from the New York Tri-State Area. There are historic departments in various libraries that have these maps, as well as some relevant articles. Smithtown and Patchogue libraries have quite an abundance of them. I was disappointed that on my previous visit, I couldn't go to any of those sections of the libraries. Taconic State Parkway

Why did you remove most of the at-grade intersections from the exit list on the Taconic State Parkway article when you were making your edits? I would like to add them back, but understand first why they were removed so it doesn't happen again. They are exits just like anything else. bmitchelf•T•F 05:41, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

You'd probably want to look at the talk page for the article, where the idea was first proposed. I agreed with it, so I followed through with it. There is no other article that lists every intersection, and there is no reason that every intersection for a nearly 200 mile road should be listed. Guess you're right that I should have looked there first, but since it's a parkway, I disagree with removing those roads because it makes it a little confusing to follow along with the exits. As someone else said, it's unique; in the state roads and such we list the major intersections, but in my opinion, any intersection with a highway/parkway is notable. Hello and thanks for road work

I grew up in the Rochester NY area, and very much enjoyed your highway pictures that you took on that rainy day in August 2007. I particularly appreciated the Thruway exit 45, since it marks the (almost) end of our trip from the Boston area :-).

One small suggestion: on your images of roads, it would be helpful to note compass directions - eg, I'm pretty sure that the exit 45 picture is west-bound, but would like the confirmation.

Thanks for the kind words. I was disappointed that a rainstorm moved in just as I was heading back to Rochester, but I think it turned out pretty well. As for the compass directions, sure, I can add those fairly quickly without a problem. You are correct as well - that is the BGS for exit 45 on I-90/Thruway westbound. Shields

Don't you do west coast roads and South-Central road states. Because I thought Arizona and New Mexico I thought still use state shields. Because the chart shown in blue is for state still use state shields. Because most recent shields I see are still state shields in those states. Don't Kansas and Oklahoma still use state shields recently, because those states are recognize as turquoise states or most of the recent shields are still state shields. The US chart made an error, Arkansas no longer use state shields, they switch to recent shields, AR is recognize as state shield only state, because we have shield still work AR state shield obviouly don't work. I'm talking about interstate shields. Because Arizona and New Mexico still currently use state shields. Because new ones I saw still have state name on interstate shields. Because those shields obviously don't work. I preview it before (but never save it), and the shield does not come out. Will Oklahoma, Kansas, and Iowa ever change out state shield with general shield. Becuase states like New York, Oregon you can hardly find any state shields.

Quantum GIS is a free GIS software program that is fully capable of making maps. Do a Google search for "Quantum GIS"; it'll appear. Once you get the program downloaded/installed, you can download shapefiles from the resources listed on WP:USRD/MTF and begin making maps. Nope, all you need is Quantum GIS and, for county routes, the TIGER road shapefiles. There's a link for that at the bottom of the page. Of course, for your purpose, all you'll need to download is the Rockland County road file. Problem is that there is no one shapefile that contains just county routes, so you'll have to extract them from the file. I can probably help you out with that.

Another note, your articles for the CRs look good, but please order the progression within them to read south to north and west to east per NYCR standards. --TMF ^Let's Go Mets - Stats 02:58, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
